Anyhow, basically you need a reaction that produces a bunch of solid material, be it carbon, a metal salt, or an inert filler material. The sugar+KNO3 reaction produces potassium carbonate as its solid particulate, thanks to having an excess of carbon along with potassium spectator ions. The smoke is white because that's the colour of the salt. Deducting from this, copper nitrate and a fuel with plenty of carbon like sugar would work to make a blue smoke, but even copper nitrate isn't the most non-toxic shit in the world, and other colourful ions like chromium are even worse.

I'm sure there's something I'm not missing, perhaps a catalyst/intermediate I'm not thinking of, but mind if I ask how you do nitro-addition? Obviously nitric acid dehydration is super unsafe for multiple nitro-additions on a single molecule, but I'm actually genuinely curious about safer reaction mechanisms. Depends on how much smoke you want, if you want little nades use ping pong balls wrapped in aluminium foil, if you want some crazy shit take 4 parts sugar and 6 parts parts potassium nitrate or Salt Peter. Mix it over a low flame with a spatula or a long metal spoon or some shit like that. Don't use your hands though, retard. Make sure it melts and put it in a jar or some other container. Stick some matches in the mix before it hardens to use as fuses. A pound will fill your neighborhood with smoke

KNO3, sugar, paraffin wax. Ratios are freely available online since it's also DIY model rocket fuel. Melt it all together and pour into whatever container you want. Make sure the flame is smothered when it's going off, or the smoke will be greatly diminished.

Actual pyro person here. Kno3 and sucrose plus parrafin works okay for white smoke but adding melted crayons will not produce good colored smoke. The combustion temperature of the composition destroys the pigment.

The most accessible route to colored smoke for the private citizen is kcl03 and lactose plus organic smoke dye. These are all freely available in the US, and kclo3 can be produced by electrolysis anyway. The container/reaction vessel must be designed such that atmospheric oxygen cannot enter. The mechanism of colored smoke production is the evaporation and condensation of the smoke dye. Excess oxygen will cause the reaction temperature to increase, breaking the dye molecules and ruining the effect.

Note that chlorates and sugars together are surprisingly sensitive. Furthermore, the melting of Kno3 and sucrose on an open flame is needlessly hazardous. Do yourself a favor and use an electric heater.
