Hello, /diy/. First time posting here. Im 22 yo full time college student. I spend most of my day studying, which makes me feel bored sometimes. Also, I'm extremely good at doing/building/fixing stuff with my hands, it just feels so natural and easy to me. My question is what are some DIY projects I could fill my free time with and possibly make a dinner money off? The only good idea I have is to make a custom sub boxes. Tools are not a problem, my father works on construction and we have all sorts of them in the garage.
Thank you.

If you have old computer hardware & woodworking skills, you can always build an arcade.

That actually sounds like a really entertaining and fun project, but who uses arcades nowadays?

make fold knives

ive been doing it for a year or so now and knives + related take up 90% of my time. i make almost exclusively lockbacks with angle, bench, disc grinders + lots of files a bit of hand sanding

always building different belt grinders, disc grinders, finding new better ways to perfect things

just recently discovered the joy of grinding bevels on a disc grinder

i go through so many files im trying to come up with a solid unit to re-cut them instead of buying new ones

a small circle of belt grinder belt with a thin tin backing to stop it from flexing with a quarter inch bolt ran through the center of it and chucked up in a drill press spinning at mach turkey. then put the file on an X/Y table, tilt it to whatever rake angle you need, then spin in the X axis to feed/cut each tooth individually into the wheel, and use the Y axis to advance to the next tooth.

ive done a couple just holding the file by hand and it worked surprisingly good. took about 5 minutes per file and they dont get hot enough to lose their hardness.

at 20 hosercoin minimum per file here in the middle of nowhere im gonna call that 5 minutes worth while

Start simple so you don’t get in over your head.

It’s easy to be cocky when you’ve fixed some Walmart furniture with L brackets and screws, but that doesn’t mean you can build a marketable dining table or middle tier side table with a bit of detail work.

Start cheap/simple and work your way up.

If you have college friends, ask them what they need then go through the process of designing, bidding and building something simple, even if it’s out of cheap 1x’s

Then figure out a niche and go from there

My campus had a bicycle repair shop on it. I spent a few evening a week fixing bikes there. It was a nice outlet for my need to do hands on work and made a little extra money. Also homebrewing in my dorm room closet. Also digging through E-waste bins and fixing anything nice enough to sell.

Same here, 24yo neet full time, I want to make me a nice custom desk, mainly in wood. I'm good with designing due to my previous studies.
The thing is, to cut wood nicely I'd need expensive tools, that take lots of space.
I don't know if they're worth it to create only a desk and few more things.

Question is, is it worth it to own them if I don't make any business out of it?

Just buy a Bahco hand saw and practice a lot.

I said I want to cut nicely. And the sound the hand saw makes is terribly annoying to my ears, I always used headphones while cutting.

Yeah, that's where the practice comes in. You can't expect to cut nicely without lots and lots of practice.

>And the sound the hand saw makes is terribly annoying to my ears, I always used headphones while cutting.
Instead of listening to music you should be concentrating on controlling your arm

If those are your tools, I do collages like that, photo them, put them in local art gallery. meet chicks. bang them.

some ways to make money: buy electronics from local auctions, resell to poor students who need PCs/Laptops.

>>1578743
yeah some kind of side job that is a "Trade" learn something, be physical, maybe meet chicks.

>>1579055
build botnets and sell them to the russian mob. Not even fucking joking its amazing money once you are hooked up

Custom sub boxes are tricky - the cost that goes into them can be pretty high compared to what you can charge. And if you have a lot of money to trick your car, you aren't going to some college kid - you are going to a shop that you know will do an amazing job. Maybe look for a shop like that, and get a side job there?

What area are you in school? urban / rural / east / west?

You can sharpen files with acid. Suspend them from the tang with wire inside a bottom-sealed PVC pipe filled with vinegar or citric acid, making sure they're not touching the sides/each other or the bottom. The acid should etch away the metal enough to sharpen the file. Won't be as good as new due to the uneven microscopic pitting on the edge but will be functional enough. Make sure to neutralize them with baking soda after.

PS: Muriatic/hydrochloric is too harsh and will give off fumes that will rust EVERYTHING within gassing distance. Also this doesn't work on case-hardened files.

electrolysis won't do it. you need acid to actually eat away at the metal all around evenly and long enough to leave an edge. it may take a long time for a heavily worn out file, or your concentration may be too low. citric acid comes as a powder so you can adjust the concentration if vinegar is too slow.
