how do you organise your tools? I'm starting to get overwhelmed and don't want my stuff just piling up randomly in a deep box

right now I just use an old set of chest of drawers (afraid the bottom plywood is going to give out) and a couple of filing cabinets.

I also have a rolling tool box similar to pic related for my gardening stuff.

and a small pencil case for a couple of tools that I keep in my car

are proper tool chests worth investing in or are they just a meme? should any metal tool chest with drawers work or should I really spend a bit more on it

>> No.1564341

I've got all my tools that need to move between the house, workshop and elsewhere in a tool bag that I can cart around.

I have electronic tools and such in the house office at the workstation, in pots and trays, there's not so much.

Workshop tools are mostly up on the walls/pegboards, with battery power tools sitting on a shelf with power outlets/charging batteries.

Also got a 3-shelf wire basket trolly thing with castors that's super fucking useful for rolling around the workshop.

It's still not ideal, but all pretty flexible. Used to get annoyed by not having the right tools in the right places, now that's mostly solved as long as my dumb ass remembers to return them every time.

I keep tool bag in my closet with common stuff so I don't have to run to the garage and carry stuff around every time I need to hang a picture or tighten a nut on a chair. Garage has a 44" toolbox with top chest. Some stuff in larger cases and power tools (aside from drill/drivers) end up under my workbench. I have 3 or 4 metal toolboxes in there with air tools, electrical, etc. Car has a small tool bag with basic junk.

>>1564346
That bag I keep in my closet is an AWP with an open top, outside pockets, and several soft dividers inside. It might work for you. Husky tool wall bags are nice but cost too much for me.

Annoying. If you have to carry it any distance you will find that the tools on the outside will rub against your legs and snag on anything they can. The major flaw of buckets is that they are open for easy theft and filling with rain water and dirt. I just use plain buckets for quick transport from my truck or tool chest.

The only hard toolbox I have is this rigid one. The only reason is because it's absolutely watertight and the garage is in shitty shape so I keep the valuables as dry as I can. The rest I've found that toolbags work best for. I cannot tell you how many times I've pissed myself off tripping/breaking/spilling everything out of a hardtoolbox, never happens with a toolbag. And they don't damage customers floors//walls as much. Also you can wedge more of them in your cab and get em easier. With toolboxes you gotta stack/alight them right so they all fit in. Knew a guy who used 6 inch clear rubbermaid boxes for various tools and I thought that was pretty novel actually, but I don't have that many.

One of the best values for money that HF offers. I have one. I don’t roll it around a ton but it’s holding up well after about a year. My buddy has had the 5-drawer for a couple years and that thing is loaded to the brim. They’re pretty well thought out with the screwdriver holes and shit, and they sell accessories like that folding table. I mounted some of those mag strips under the lid of mine and have pliers and stuff hanging off of that.

One thing I wish they offered was a lid that opens like pic related. Dude at my work has a Mac like that but they cost 5x as much. Don’t be tricked by these cheap models like pic related though because they’re much smaller physically than the US Generals.

Make sure you use the coupons, the 1-drawer with two shelves is only $85 with coupons, $109 for the one in your pic, and $159 for the 5-drawer,

I’m not sure if that is the same anon but...

Those HF toolboxes are solid for the money. They’re about the same quality as the old school Craftsman boxes or a Kobalt box, which is years and years around a home garage but you might fuck a drawer after 5 years of slamming them in the shop.

If I could do it again, I would take the US General 26” tool chest over my Craftsman any day considering the prices are really close. The USG is a lot deeper than the other brands so you can cram much more shit in there. They have more drawers too, the top and bottom would be like the same hight as a 3pc Craftsman set with the middle drawers added.

As always, keep in mind the Chinesium hardware so don’t be suprised if a caster shears off running it around a shop 50hrs a week.

Also this >>1568140 looks like that super cheap sheet metal Craftsman Homeowner set and the bottoms of the drawers might fall out once you put anything more than a few screwdrivers in there.

Their boxes are ok, but watch the prices. Don’t ever pay anything close to full price from Sears. At this point it’s all the same Chinese crap. I use a tool backpack with the plastic bottom. The front opens up and sits there up straight.
It's spacious enough to throw nylon all round, wire nuts, extra wrenches and other stuff plus your usual hand tools. Im in commercial refrige and a lot of guys use adjustables but since i have the room, ive got both SAE and Metric combo wrenches. Its nice to not round heads and nuts and keep backing that up.
Also mapp gas is nice when oxyacetylene is too bulky for one swager in condensing units or cooling towers.

>second tool chest, shittier quality tools, less often used tools, 5 drawer so it has a huge space in the bottom to store taller junk.
>topper filled with MISC junk and labelled screw/bolts/hardware I dont want to lose.

>third tool chest, sits next to my milling machine
>has milling machine specific stuff in it.

>filling with lathe specific stuff in it
>kennedy box near the lathe with other tooling

>5 drawer tool chest topper
>sits next to the drill press
>has crappy drill bits and hole saws and brad point bits and spade bits and other drill press stuff

>tool chest topper and large portable toolbox, sits next to the table saw and the miter saw and has push sticks miter gauges, blades, router bits other woodworking stuff

I also have cabinets and shelving units laying around too.
For anything too big to fit in the chests, or has some need to be segregated, they get put into similar compartmentalized cabinets or nearby shelving.

I have a smaller cabinet sitting next to my air compressor and bench grinders and buffer that is filled with fittings and grinding wheels, wire wheels etc etc.
Have a cabinet filled with small boxes that hold random clamps, screws, bolts, other hardware you may need.

Shelving unit with my power tools to sit on.

I dont keep many tools in the house, if I need to take tools somewhere I just fill up tool bags. If your tools arent in a chest readily available, you wont want to use them
I lived in an apartment and had all my tools in portable toolboxes, and it makes you dread looking through them for what you need. Tool chests are the only way.

That brand is like the one thing that kept Sears stores across the country floating for so many years. I think you underestimate how much boomers would prefer to buy Craftsman instead of some junk from China.

I’m at Lowe’s like once a week in the receiving area and I’m always taking a look around the returns area to see what they have and there has been a lot of Craftsman back there, not just hand tools but all sorts of shit. So they’re obviously selling quite a bit of Craftsman branded stuff and some of it is breaking... my main point being the stuff has to sell pretty well for that much of it to come back.

Welp, they’re keeping some Kobalt I guess but most of it along with lots of Irwin and Bosch stuff is getting discontinued.

They had a table full of 50% off stuff too. Wasn’t a ton of stuff I could use, but I snagged a Kobalt 4pc pick set for $3.50 and a 5pc Irwin precision screwdriver set for $5.00. Yeah, cleared out and sold up my dad's garage last year when he moved into a retirement village. Place was so full of stuff it had no functional working space any more. Had to sell a bunch of old couches and other furniture before there was room to get in and see the more valuable stuff like tools.

I would have snagged a lot of the tools, but I live far away and it wasn't feasible to move it all, so it ended up getting sold. Pennies on the dollar for a lot of stuff, but the more substantial stuff (pillar drill, router table etc) fetched a fair amount.

For the smaller stuff, I loaded up the car and found a nearby agricultural auction house that holds 'car boot' sales each weekend. That got rid of a fair amount of stuff but the folks that come to those only go for the very low price stuff so you have to focus on volume (e.g. tools in a rummage box for $1 per item.

In your case unless you're able to sort it out before he passes, you'll need to take on the duties of becoming executor of his estate, or you'll have to get permission from the executor to liquidate what's in the garage like this. It is a chunk of work but it's slow-burn stuff, so you can work through it in a steady manner. Worst case, if the house needs sold and the garage is a big obstable, you can chuck it all in a van and move it to a storage facility, then sort it there. Costs will just come out of the estate.

>east wall has a craftsman toolbox with some mechanic's tools and a tap and die set, with an 8'x8' section of pegboard next to it.
>pegboard has framing and drywall tools
>west wall is a mirror of east, but with two toolboxes
>toolboxes have more mechanic's tools, sheet metal tools, and a couple of power tools that don't fit on the shelves
>pegboard has extension cords, air hose, and lawn and garden stuff.
>shelf above toolbox has welding electrodes, bottle jacks, jack stands, carb cleaner, acetone and pb blaster, plus a creeper hanging off the side
>floor jack, weed wacker, cutting torch, compressor, and hedge trimmer are all tucked away in corners or against a wall
>deep storage on a sheet of plywood in the rafters with stuff like left over grass seed, extra 2-stroke oil, half a bag of concrete mix

the older larger one doesnt have a chipping/hammer mode, it's a rotary hammer only which is why i got him the newer one when Home Depot had it on clearance ($50).

between the two i prefer the older one for drilling larger precise holes while the new one is a more flexible multipurpose tool. they both drill around the same speed and the old one's front grip and adjustable depth gauge makes it a much more stable tool for putting holes in things while the the new one's higher RPM, sleek profile, LED light and chipping modes makes it a more flexible tool for chipping, scraping, light drilling and other oddball jobs.

they are both a step up from any cordless hammer drill but its the cheapest cordless SDS drill out there so dont expect miracles. 1/2" to 5/8" holes are doable with some patience but they are really meant to tackle smaller stuff.

Man they had the brushless combo kits with the sawzall for so cheap around Xmas. What other Ryobi tools to you have? Because if they want $100+ for the saw, you might be able to grab a brushless drill, impact, circ saw, and recip saw for like $200 with a couple batteries and a charger, then try to sell your older models on OfferUp or even just a pawn shop for $25ea and you would still probably come out ahead.

Anyway what batteries do you have? If you have a couple older 1.3’s with some cycles on them, you’re going to burn through them real quick, esp with the brushed saw. Even more of a reason to see if they have some good sales coming up and try to jump on a kit with a couple 4.0 packs.

Also the newer brushless Ryobis tend to be nicer than the base model cheap brushed ones, and not just the motor. The whole build is better.

Every now and then sears has a big cashback offer thing. Like spend 100$ get 100$ back in their points @ 10$ every week or month. There's still some USA craftsman stuff sold through sears but you gotta look for them. Small things like their diehard batteries, organizer trays for tools, and so on are still worth it for spending the ~10$ a week, or if you have a kmart nearby you can snag paper towels or other household goods.

CM toolboxes end up being cheaper than HF if you get in on the points game, but it really requires you have a sears nearby still and they don't come in the fancy HF colors. They're built better too.

You can find some other middle boxes from Viper, Teng, etc online but they're much more money and the quality difference may not be worth, unless you just like the visuals.

Depends where you do it. Starting out with zero experience I made about 40k My first year.. last year I was at 58k with a lot of time off after 8 years of experience. Best I’ve had was 67k. If I moved to an area with a fender population I’d expect to be over 100k. Gotta get in doing service for some place that works on higher end stuff or your gonna be in trailer parks and bs shit 24-7... good job if you like trouble shooting. For example... customer can’t get oven to go above 250, but everything they put in it burns... 5 min fix if you know what’s happening... replacing the control board isn’t the answer... but I’ve seen an embarrassing amount of places that have done it... usually see this every other month or so.

Perhaps pliance repair might be for me, my Honeywell portable AC I bought 'for parts' 'as is' had a bad cap on the control board and I just went ahead and replaced the cap and the AC started working again.

Actual answer is oven got set to Celsius instead of Fahrenheit.. however if your in a non US country I’ve always wondered if you’d run into people saying their oven will go up to 500!

Thanks for the triggering. 40 miles away is a kmart and a sears that are both kill.

On the plus side a harbor freight store moved in.

I'm to damned poor and tired to give a shit anymore. I'll just risk the chrome plating cuts and watch my knuckles rather than buy good shit. I always lose it anyway

Get a billion of those cord organizer things that stick to your desktop to make runs of keyboard and mouse wires and shit. Drill a hole in them all and mount them on a bunch of strips of 1x1.

Thought i wanted to try and repair some appliances and shit. My oven went out. Cool, i can do this. $400 for 2 gas solenoid things, heating element switches, and control board. We bought the mutherfucker on sale for $350.

I threw a propane fitting in it. We backroaded and had hotdogs and then i yeeted the mutherfucker of a bridge and we put like 200 rounds in it.

Idgaf if it was a $5 fix. Enough is enough.

I'm good with that, my issue is long term cable storage. I have a lot of cables I don't use often but they still come in handy every once in awhile.
