I have a 1989 chevy truck that won't start. I went to start it and it made a loud terrible sound but did start 1 time now it just makes a light clicking sound and doesn't turn over at all.

I was sure it was the starter so i took it off and had it checked and they said it was a good starter. So i have no idea what the problem is.

*the battery and alternator are new all connections are clean and tight

Any ideas what it could be?

/o/ here. When did you last service or replace the oil pump? My dad had the same symptoms and it was low oil pressure due to a worn out pump.

Hit the cellenoud with a wrench

never, the oil gauge was reading that I had good pressure though.

>>1560864
is that on the starter?

>> No.1560870

Try to turn it over manually. See if the engine is seized.

I'll try it but it drove normally the 1 time it started after making the terrible sound, hard to accurately describe the sound but it was loud sounded real bad and only lasted during start which took maybe 10 seconds

Something's happened with the starter motor.

I took it of had it checked at one of those zone shops they said it was good, could they be wrong?

Are you doing these things before or after the incident? And you can always try a push start.

There's plenty of things that could have sheered internally and not gotten picked up or jammed until later. Hopefully it'll turn out to be the starter or it not being shimmed properly. First thing is to make sure motor spins because it's so easy.

I'll see if i can do a push start and report the results later, thanks for the help everyone.

Does battery have a charge? If so it may be the alternator. I've had this happen to me once.

The noise was probably your starter pinon not disengaging from the starter ring.

As far as your no start, charge your battery. It doesn't mean crap if your battery is new or old, if it has low voltage its not going to start. Probably 90% of the time if you have clicking and no start its a low battery. If you don't have a charger get a jump to start.

They are definitely wrong. Sounds like a bad solenoid on the starter motor.

Could also be the starter coil, but that won't explain the original noise.

Bad solinoid
Bendix trashed
Or bolt fell out allowing starter to shift

Remove starter and test solinoid and that the gear can move out and back. Or just take the whole thing to Autozone or one of the places that test that for free.

Clicking is normally a dead battery.

This. Or could be worn teeth on the flex plate or flywheel.
If there's shims for it, could be that as well.

I came here to say this. OP is in over his head if he didnt fully check the starting and charging system with a multimeter right off the bat.

>> No.1561531

Bro, hate to break it to you but you're probably really low on headlight fluid. Also sounds like you're a giant homo so there's that as well.

Jump it with another car. Could be a little crushed up internally.
Replace the coolant sensor pigtail if she runs funny. Popular problem with TBI

>> No.1562550

the sound was your solenoid partially engaging the starter gear to your ring gear. take the solenoid apart and thoroughly clean the contacts and it will work good as new. reseal with some RTV or aviation formagasket

>is that on the starter?
yes
it works best with 2 people, have a friend turn the key and you tap the starter at the same time

>yes

Maybe on OP's vehicle, but lots of starter solenoids are separate.

Maybe it's something in the carburator. Or check the spark plugs!

Dead battery. Even with some charge, it can easily not have enough juice to start that truck. Put it on cables with another car for ten minutes or so, then try to start it. If it starts, let it run for another 15 or 20 minutes then shut it down. See how many times it starts (if at all) after that. If it doesn't start after charging on another car for that long, then it's starter. Smack the shit out of the starter and see what happens. I used to have a 79 dodge that I kept a shovel handle behind the seat for just that reason. Smacked the starter every time I started it for about a year.

Why?

Cause I was a cheap teenager.
