1557235 No.1557235 [Reply] [Original]

I can come by a used shipping container for free and was thinking of burying it in my backyard to have some sort of bunker. It would be great for safety if there ever is a huge fire or poisen gas outside but mostly I wanna use it for fun (fix electrical and plumming and maybe have a few beers with my friends).

What is a good way to isolate it all so it doesn't get cold in winter?

>> No.1557238

Shipping containers are actually impervious to all forces, including the force of warmth and the force of anti-warmth (coldth).

>> No.1557318

One might be able to improve lateral stability by welding on big sheets of metal, so they form vertical pipes with the existing construction. This would take several days of grinding and welding but you might end up with something strong enough to withstand the forces.
You could also dig out a hole and put steel reinforced concrete around the thing. This would also make for more of a bunker.

bury it deep enough that it will always be 60f inside
also, add reinforcing framework inside

>> No.1557514

Where are you at? What is your frost line depth? All these aside, a small electric space heater will do fine for the sparse time you are in it. With chums chillin inside you will find the need for fresh air ventilation is greater than climate controll.

>> No.1558358

the weight of the dirt pushing in on the sides will collapse it, you need to reinforce the sides ,bottom and top with steel bars, then i recommend a moisture barrier, insulation, and some sort of walling weather drywall, plastic ect, the weight and pressure of the dirt from the sides will collapse the container overtime if its not reinforced.

He just needs to counter that pressure with something following Newtons figures. Maybe fill it with water and use it as an underground pool?

>> No.1558452

Retards. Don't bury your shipping container in dirt. Just cut a shipping container sized hole into solid stone so it won't cave in, and cover the top with lightweight fake plants.

To deal with winter, just put insulation between the container and the stone with a layer of insulation on top under the fake plants. Insulation hardly weighs anything.

How do they lock the connectors on a vertical stack of containers?

Like it you see a flatbed truck it'll have locking handles all around where the container mounts on, but that only works for the lowest container in the stack

>> No.1559187

>>1559186
Some of them have an inset so the bottom of the top container fits into the top of the bottom container.

Some of them just sit on top of each other, they're too heavy even when empty to slide off unless the ship was on a very extreme angle, and at that point the ship is sinking anyway. I have never seen shipping containers stacked higher than 1 high on a truck

>> No.1559197

>>1559187
I figured they would take greater care to prevent losing containers, since you often hear about a ship hitting a big wave and losing a bunch of containers in a storm.

I just figured that was freak accidents or accidentally forgetting to secure the stacks, rather than just stacking them up loose and hoping for the best. Interesting.

They aren't really secured by much, if anything. It takes time and money to secure and unsecure loads that 99% of the time aren't going anywhere anyway, and the remaining 1% nothing you can do will secure them well enough.
Now multiply that by the fact that at this very moment, there are many tens of thousands of shipping containers in transit on the ocean, and yeah, these things go over with enough regularity to create serious shipping hazards and significant economic loss. Insurance of contents is cheaper than securing it "properly", particularly when your lost shipping container that damages another ship is unlikely ever to be identified later.

the answer to your problem is school busses. Busses can handle the pressure and have been used to make bunkers in the past. They can sometimes even be bought cheaper than shipping containers.

Soil weighs about 110 lbs/cuft.

Also after some quick mental gymnastics,

Everyone knows that we don't have the technology to bury a metal shipping container without having the roof cave in.
The only explanation is that an alien must have buried a shipping container and then constantly posted it to this page to be enigmatic.
I know, I know. I was skeptical too, but now it makes so much sense, that I am amazed that I ever doubted in the first place.
