what is the best way to dig a hole about 350-550 feet deep for my wife's kids experiment?
I spoke to hold digging contractors, they said it is impossible to get their machine in so was thinking of using hand tools. Need it to be about 2 ft wide and 350-550 feet deep for my wifes kids experiments. He is measuring explosions for science

Probably contractors have the wrong machinery. Pipes for hydro excavation gear can run a long way into built up sites. Look up hydro excavation. Two pipes, water in, slurry out. Truck in the street.

I put in a fence a few years ago, dug all the post holes by hand with a digging bar and post hole diggers. I was doing a three foot deep, 18 inch hole in less than half an hour. If you do the math, and figure it's a little easier with a wider hole, a 5'x5' hole is just about an 8 hour job, give or take. I'd hate to do it for a living though.
