FWD or RWD?
RWD is way easier, AWD depands on car, FWD is shit except old vectra engines where clutch could be changed without decoupling gearbox
you need engine hoist for FWD to make it easy but can be done without it too

dual mass flywheels feel like they're fucked even when they're not. luk have a phone app called "dmf checkpoint" that'll show you how to test it.
also gearbox oil smells of cat piss and rotting onions, try not to spill it when you pull the halfshafts. and when you do spill it, try not to roll around in it. oil spill mats are your friend.

this. typically you just replace the clutch disk and reuse the pressure plate, throwout bearing, etc. Those kits that include everything are a waste of money. Maybe every four or five disks you should look carefully at the other components.

It's gonna be painful unless your car has easy access to the clutch, which I can assure it doesn't have. A pit or a bridge or whatever allows you to get under your car will make the job a lot easier but it is not mandatory for fwd, and for rwd you just really need to lift it off enough to get to the clutch and put it on jack stands.
DO NOT FUCKING REUSE OLD PARTS
Being miserable once in a while is fine, having to be miserable again because you wanted to save a buck is dumb, especially since a while kit is generally around 150 bucks. If you're poor, at least change the bearing too.

That said, changed the clutch on a 2001 citroen without any special tools, but putting it back in sucks but it's doable if you know a bit about working on cars.

Not the Mazda tech. But also a professional. Agreed, it depends on the situation and your tolerance for BS. But it is not statistically a sound idea to replace a known good part with a new part. New is not equal to better. The more parts you change, the more things can go wrong. And yes there's the other side of the coin. People talking about changing flywheel and slave cylinder are taking shit way too far. It is not just about being cheap. You are gambling either way. Performance failures are oftentimes attributed to the last part that was replaced. I would bet on the other color with a life limited part such as a timing belt, if I was changing a water pump anyway. But not the other way around. Looks like OP pic is the whole shebang kit anyhow.

>who can and just peg the top bolts for them when they do it

old trick to do it alone: get two spare bolts a bit longer than the top ones. saw the heads off and saw a slot so a flat head screwdriver fits. before removing the final bolts during disassembly put these two in the top then remove all the bolts, then one guy can pull the trans off of those studs.

so leave them in place, and put the trans back in and they hold it in place while you put the other bolts in sorta tight, but get all the bolts in and snug them all a bit and gradually build up to the necessary torque.

Just finished my 2nd clutch last week. It's a chore. If you're doing it because it "broke" it's usually a failed throw out bearing. The hard part is just getting the 150lb transmission off delicately and putting back on with precision. A buddy helps.
Random tips:
1. Make a diagram of the bolts as you remove it, like draw a circle, number the bolt holes, put each bolt in a numbered ziplock...because they are often different lengths and sizes.
2. The cross brace holding up the transmission also supports the rear engine, so if you remove the cross brace and transmission nothing is supporting the engine and it will slump downhill towards rear and possibly harm engine mounts, so support engine under the pan with blocks of wood.
3. Get the service manual for yours, watch lots of youtube vids.
4. Autozone or w/e will loan you a pilot bearing remover free.
5. Mark your drive shaft attachments before removing, it was balanced at factory. Spray interior splines down with oil and protect from rusting.
6. It's easy to do lots of things at this point, like replace ujoints, rear seal on crank shaft, replace internal slave, replace input/output shaft seals.

Oh man I haven’t even been there since Irma. I gotta get back one of these weekends. I’m sure they got it back together fast.

The crazy thing was they were expecting Irma to slam the SE coast, so we had power companies from all over the country staged nearby before the storm hit. Then she took that jog west at the last minute. So the minor damage in Broward and Dade got fixed before they even started working on the major damage in the Keys and around Naples.
