1510641 No.1510641 [Reply] [Original] [archived.moe]

So one of of my projects I need a form fitted steel endcap, in a oblong shape with a depth of about an inch and a half. Render related.

I've checked all around for pre-made ones without any luck, mcmastercarr came close but they didn't quite cut it and were too shallow anyway. Is there anything out there I could pull something like this off of, or how could I go about making one? I mean I guess I could mill one out, but that seems like a hell of a lot of doing for what should be just stamped sheet metal.

Sorry for retardo question.

buy the round one

put a torch on it and force it on with a hammer

Tried that, didn't work as well as I'd have liked. Plus again, too shallow. I'm thinking I might just have to roll some sheet metal and weld the top on.

bend flatbar into ring (hossfeld, or heat&beat) weld up, fettle on the bick, torch out a plate & weld on, linish, done.

desu if your design includes parts you can't make or buy, your design is Wrong, gb2/drawing board.

Personal projects with already established dimensions don't really play that way, you know that.
Anyway yeah that's the plan, I just ordered some nice galvanized steel to bend and weld up. Can't wait to breathe in all the success.

Heating Galvanized is a mistake. Dip it in Muriatic first.

if you strip galv off with hydrochloric acid it makes killed spirits, a potent soldering flux. excellent for soldering ends on bowden cables.

Are you saying that you can't change the dimensions on a personal project?

That's correct, I can't. Please tell me all about how I'm wrong though.

If a project is subject to constraints like that, it doesn't sound very "personal" to me. You said that you "can't" as if you're dealing with a client that doesn't want you to modify whatever the end caps are going on. For a "personal" project, that would be on the table as a consideration to weigh against the trouble of making custom end caps. Of course, you haven't said what they're going on or why they need the parameters you've given.

>>1511505
>doesn't want you to modify whatever the end caps are going on
Well, yeah, that's exactly it. Could I just trim the wood down to a more conventional shape? Sure. But it'd look really, really bad and that's a no go.

>>1511505
not the anon ur replying to, but whenever ive made things for my motorcycle like a new light bar or instrument cluster there were indeed dimensions i COULD NOT change because they had to conform to the new lights/speedo/wire sizes/mounting points

its perfectly reasonable for a personal project to have very tight constraints.

>> No.1511997

>>1511535
Then it's not that you "can't", it's that there are other concerns that you prioritize more than the hassle of making custom caps. Which is fine, but it's important to keep in mind that making alterations is actually an option.

>>1511811
>there were indeed dimensions i COULD NOT change because they had to conform to the new lights/speedo/wire sizes/mounting points
It might not have been desirable to do so, but for example you could have purchased different equipment with different mounting points, modified the mounting points on the ones you had, or built an adapter.

>its perfectly reasonable for a personal project to have very tight constraints
Sure, but on a personal project, you're the one deciding what the constraints are, and if something turns out to be impractical or otherwise undesirable you can change them.

if i had purchased say a different set of lights then the light bar i made would have to conform to a different set of mounting points for the different lights. i still have to conform to the specs that come from the thing i got. unless i make my own bracket to mount it to, then i can attach it however i want to my lightbar. but then i have to conform the bracket to mount to the tapped holes on the light.
there are definately things you cant change on a personal project. dont even think of saying *just drill and tap ur own holes into the led bro u dont have to use their pre-existing holes* thats a stupid idea

pic related, def recommenced these lights to anyone with poor illumination they run off 12v so its easy to hook upto existing vehicle systems

Sheet metal came in today.
Bent to shape nicely, welds were sloppy but that's what grinders are for so it turned out alright. Don't think I'll need to harden it.
