Need to replace my sump pump but I can't get this loosened, the thing will not budge at all. Should I use a blow torch to heat the fitting up or use some kind of lubricant?

>> No.1487449

>>1487442
Put a piece of sheet metal behind it and torch away. Penetrating oil isn't likely to be of much help since you'll have a hard time getting it up into the threads of the lower portion.

>> No.1487461

No no, def use the oil....that's a union. you need two wrenches for this..turn the nut to the left..hold another wrench to provide leverage...it will begin to purge air, it may smell like rotten eggs but that's because its a sump pump. let that bleed out...it may take a very long time you will be surprised how much pressure backflow preventer's build up...its hidden inside the pipe...it may take an entire day.

This. keep a fan blowing as galvanized pipe will give off toxic fumes when heated. Nothing to shit your pants over, just be aware of.

Go to harbor freight and get you some big , at least 18” pipe wrenches. The bigger the better. It’ll come loose with enough leverage. You are using two pipe wrenches right? One to hold the bottom of the union, and by how it looks from the photo, you need to turn the union nut clockwise for it to loosen. Which you may already know. If you want take a picture looking down to the union from above it so we can get a better look.

Worthless.

You need 2 stillson wrenches, at least 18" to get leverage to break the joint.

Spray with whatever you got

Beat the fuck out of it. Hard. With a big hammer. Get a pipe wrench on it. It may be left threaded.

Act quickly after beating the piss out of it.

You or another anon hold pipewrench hard against other side to beat on for some pressure. Onviously hokd wrench by handle in case u miss.

Been around them my whole life.

Good luck.

>also dont be affraid to beat the piss out of it. Rounding the sides is fine

From the pic, it appears the 'ring' is on the top half and the threaded half is on bottom.
Penetrant will seep around the ring and to the threads below.
Liquid Wrench is one of the better brands and is cheap. ~$4
50/50 acetone/ATF works well too and is even cheaper if you have components around the garage.

Did you try motivating it with the back of your pipe wrench first? I found this worked best for loosening steam hoses apart.

No. The piece of the union attached to the lower pipe has female threads to attach to the pipe but is also the male threads the center part of the union threads onto.
The point in the pic shown to apply penetrant is where this threaded ring slips on the upper part attached to the upper pipe.
Tuning the large nut/ring to the left will tighten it's female threads on the lower male threaded part.

If it was the union on the bottom of pic related you'd be correct.
OP's pic shows the union installed as in the upper union in pic related.

Cut that bitch clean off with a saw all and 14 tpi cobalt blade and use a long no hub coupling. Most likely it will be almost impossible to unscrew the other end from the old nasty pump, and even if you do, that pipe will be too short or long in comparison to the new pump. And if the pit has mud or muck in it, cut the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket off or put a 16” patio brick under it so it doesn’t suck up mud and die prematurely.

just cut the fucking thing. very likely it won't be the right size/length for the new pump anyway. when it comes to plumbing i very rarely ever try to disassemble anymore as it's faster and cheaper to just rip apart and redo it

op is turning the wrong way probably

Set pipe wrench to where the wall will hold it on the pipe, get another wrench and use cheater bar to loosen
