Hi /diy/

Anybody here ever built their own power hammer or trip hammer? I'm trying to source a good motor but I have all the structural steel to build one so far.

I'm not sure how I'll connect the treadle to control the motor however

No idea but bump for interest. Good luck op.

leave the motor running constantly. have the treadle actuate a friction clutch. slipping the clutch gives you fine control to make single/soft hits.

OP here - that's a better idea than the tensioner/pulley system and slack belt design I had in mind actually. Figured running motor with a slightly slack v-belt and depressing the treadle would put tension onto the belt, causing tthe belt to grip the drive pulley and run the flywheel.

Hitting roadblock as to power supply issues so I'm looking into a phase converter that won't break the bank

phase converter probably not worth

what you need is either an old treadmill to use for parts (motor, speed control) or a VFD

you can use a VFD to convert single to three phase but you need to double the rating of the motor

ie: want to run 3hp 3 phase motor on single phase, need 6hp vfd

they dont like you doing it but it can be done

ebay has motors/vfd combo deals always

Balls. I ordered a 2HP rated VFD and was shooting for a 2 hp motor. Damn. I'm seeing a few articles saying that you should have a VFD of 150% of your motor rating.

So I need a VFD rated for 4 HP to run a 2 HP motor(although I don't have the motor yet so I guess I'll settle for a 1 HP motor if worse comes to worst)
