Too many choices these days, and ever since they started making halfway decent ratchets in Asia, you don’t need to spend over $100 to get something that doesn’t feel like it has rocks inside.

What are you guys working with?

I'm partial to the gearwrench 120xp ones.

I just splurged on the big snap-on because I was in a good mood when I saw the tool truck pull up one day. It costs almost as much as the whole rest of the drawer though.

Urrea makes good heavy duty industrial stuff, I dont know how there smaller mechanics type tools hold up, but there hammer wrenches and sockets do great, for really cheap too. Rumor has it that a stanely proto factory went out of business in mexico because Proto wanted to be able to say made in America so the Mexicans were like "fuck it" and kept on making tools with a different name.

There’s the great debate between flex heads and swivels. They both do about the same thing. The Gearwrench swivel head has a lot of crappy reviews because the plastic F/R selector breaks off.

>>1477734
You gotta try something with a little longer handle and better gears. They’re just nicer to use. Plus the regular Cman handles are so fucking short that you can’t do anything on used cars without breaking everything loose with a breaker bar first.

>>1477695
The Tekton swivel head is the exact same thing as the HF one. Methinks a lot of those 72T Taiwan ratchets are basically the same.

Also does anybody own these Craftsman Premium ratchets? They look awesome, I guess very similar to Armstrong and Gearwrench and manufactured for them by Apex-Danaher. From lookin around, it seems they were only sold for like 5 years, maybe 2010-2015.

If anybody used to be like this and has never used anything besides the Craftsman raised panel wrenches or those shitty round head ones thay come with kits, save up $12 and buy one of these bad boys. Crescent CRW6N. Ace Hardware has them for cheap and they will ship to store and they’re all over the internet for the low. These look great for the money.

I got the zyklops 1/4 ratchet and the pawls or something fucked up in like 2 months without really beating on it ended up getting a harbor freight swivel head and its been going strong all year the harbor freight low profile 3/8 seems to be holding up well too Ive put a pipe on the end and torqued chipper blades on with no issues.

I hate the new craftsman ratchets because they have way too much weight in the handle it feels like you are swinging a hammer around with your wrist

That’s part of the reason I like it. It’s a long handle 3/8” so I don’t have to worry about putting a little weight onto it so I don’t have to grab a breaker bar and 1/2” socket. Oh and for anybody who thinks tooth count is everything, that Williams is so tight (in a good way) that the swing is probably close to a loose 60T from China.

I have been thinking about a long handle 1/2” drive and I can’t decide what I want to do. Williams is affordable and nice, Proto makes a 45T (J5450XL) for around $70, there’s a Carlyle 90T which is $60-$70 that I really like, Gearwrench 84T is about $50.

>>1477875
>>1477834
Kek. Those things really are trash. Redditors think everything from that brand is superior to Snap On but the stuff besides their screwdrivers isn’t very appealing.

>>1477877
I agree. I have a 72T which is the same shape handle as those 84T’s and I think it’s nice in 1/4” but the 1/2” is way too big. If you swing a little to much with it working on a car, it would be easy as hell to put a dent in something.

The regular 36T ratchets aren’t bad, but they’re too short and the plastic selector switch made some people mad. The 84T has a metal one at least. That plastic selector switch is also on those Pitt Pro ratchets which makes me kinda nervous because they stick out from the back of the head and could definitely be sheared off.

The ratchets in that pic are the Craftsman Professional Series Premium ratchets. They had great reviews but I have no idea what they retailed for but I bet you could catch a sale for something reasonable.

>pic related
Jesus I wonder if anybody actually pays for these Cman gearwrenches that you couldn’t even warranty.

My favorite ratchets, by far, are the orange handled ones in >>1477887, Gray, but made in USA.

you guys think about your tools way too much

just use em and get the job done it dont matter what the tooth count of your taiwanese fuck stick is

shorter ratchets are better because you can fit in tight spots and you can always go cut a chunk of pipe for a snipe when you need more jam

3/8 is Stanley as above a stubby Pittsburgh one I paid almost nothing for, a free sonic fools one I got as part of a sample kit, and a craftsman USA -v- one I got as part of a tool lot from a neighbor who was moving for $5
