Is it possible to rip a speaker from a home-theatre's sub and wire it into a car's amp/stereo? I know nothing about car stereo's.

When I google it people talk about using DC converters and bullshit, like they're just trying to power the sub as if it's in an outlet, but I'm more wanting to bypass all that and just use the speaker with it's 2 wires, and hook it up to an actual car's amp. Would it be the same as if I bought the same size sub made specifically for cars?

I always see high-ends home theatre systems at goodwill for dirt-cheap and want to inset a 8" sub in my Cherokee's cargo area

>> No.1477086

It is possible, you just have to solder the sub directly into the stereo. Just run a wire from the back burner of the stereo to the sub and make sure you mount it in a way that it doesn't vibrate too much.

Forgot to mention; keep me/us updated. Pics are appreciated. Good thread potential here.

Caredul anon its probably low wattage and fucking 8 ohms

you need the driver circuit to be able to hook it to the stereo.. thats how it separates the frequencies for bass and treble, but you knew this already didnt you?

>> No.1477211

stereo pro here: dissemble the bass box you will notice that the 110v. uses a step down transformer. eliminate that and pipe 12v. directly into the circuit board. No need for a fuse as the board has switching transistors in case you cross feed inputs. Now run the bass lead from the radio to the input wire you normally use. Add an additional 12v. pos. wire for the extra boom you want...any questions just ask I'll monitor this thread

what the fuck... adding another lead to power wont increase the bass... it depends on the amplifier you dumb tard.. you are a pro alright. pro piece of shit

the advice given was not gonna help. OP needs to just go buy a goddamn sub thats designed for car stereo instead of nigger rigging some chink household sub from some shitty home stereo that is completely underpowered for car audio

yeah, it'll work coz a speaker is a speaker is a speaker - you put in a signal and it vibrates and makes sound. it wont be super-duper, tho, coz it'll probably be getting the full frequency range, instead of just the lows. a normal thrift-store sub will also include a filter to remove the high frequencies. it's made of one or more coils and some capacitors. but your unit is self-powered, so the filtering is probably done electronically, coz it's cheaper that way. (so you cant separate the filter from the amplifier itself.)

but a car is such a bad acoustic environment that it prob wont make any difference.

Right.
>>1477211
Goof. You can't assume the power supply is only a single rail, there could be +/- 15v for opamps and a +5v rail for logic. Could even be a switching supply, who knows what is going on in the box? Additionally you'd need to fuse it regardless, it's cheap insurance, why chance shit? And those "switching transistors" are diodes. Pick up a book, read it and get a fucking education before you spout more bullshit.

Yes, it will work. Ironically, you could also put a sock in it, to block the port that sub box probably has, and it will sound better.

"took the box apart and wired it to my amp" show a photo please. There are two boxes here ( the original subwoofer cabinet and the new box you stole.

(OP) I haven't even responded to anyone in this thread yet except now. Still figuring out if it's worth the trouble to try, I live in a college town I could easily buy a couple 12's, but this would honestly just be doing this for fun if it's not incredibly difficult
