I wish I had a shop to build a boat in. I live in Hawaii, and protesters killed our inter-island ferry project in its infancy--meaning the only way to get around is by plane for most folks.

It's kinda rough. Can't really do inter-island travel anymore unless you're pretty well-off; it's prohibitively expensive to keep a large vessel, and the old flying-boat services are no more.

I guess the real irony of it is that by keeping people using big conventional inter-island jet flights they probably ended up producing a lot more pollution than if they'd just let the ferry system be.

As I understand it, the law required a pair of environmental impact statements to be undertaken as opposed to the singular one which had been obtained; the legal battle over whether or not a second one was to be required of them ate up so much time and money that the company went belly-up.

As for "rule of money"--well, I can't really fault the protesters motivations. It's a shame the project was killed, but I can't help but empathize with them somewhat, as someone born and raised here. There's a very legitimate concern over the infectiousness of urbanization and big-money landgrabs and projects escaping from their containment zone in Honolulu, and the history of the islands is one of environmental catastrophe after environmental catastrophe.

Maybe one day we'll get a state-run system. One can hope. But that day's far off, I reckon--we have a light rail project which has been a testament to the ineffectiveness, bureaucracy, and graft of our one-party government, going from a $4 billion initial cost to a current one of like $10 billion.

Whatever. I'm rambling. What I mean to say is, "It's a bit more nuanced than, 'hurr, dang commies, git.'" If anything, it is, ironically, crony capitalism's fault--you can't get shit done in the island unless you grease the right palms, and said government palms are always holding onto the hand of private interests with their free hand.

My issue with boats can be summed up with this handy mspaint chart. You can really only pick two.
If you want a cheap seaworthy boat it's gonna be some lame ass canoe or 80s fishing boat that totally can't pick up chicks.
If you want one that's cool and cheap it'll be a money pit.
And if you want one that's cool and seaworthy, it'll cost you an arm and a leg.
