Found this chainsaw at the dump, the thing won't start up and I think it's the coil.
I measured the resistance between the tree contacts: ≈ 2000, 4000, and 4 ohms.
I'm pretty sure this means I'ts bust..?

I think I have found the good replacement, but how can I be sure before buying that it's a good replacement?

The spark plug gets wet so I ruled out the carburator, also tried a working plug and same results..

Pic is the new piece.

Chainsaw is from 2007 and never even been sharpened.. must have just been sitting idle in a garage all along.

The chainsaw: shitty no brand, but still just replacing the coil could be worth it.
But it's an annoying home model so to access the part I literally have to take it apart, 15-20 screws and all..
Please give your advice!

>> No.1456087

Also could anyone give advice on where else to look for the part? I feel uncomfortable buying it off ebay..

>> No.1456090

If the two small wires go to a switch disconnect the top one and try spinning the flywheel with a good spark plug sitting on top of the head. If it works its the switch or wiring at fault.

>>1456083

someone threw it away for a reason. i wouldnt just rely on one part being bad. maybe the engine is shot. maybe the carb is shot. by the time you replace the coil and carb if they are both bad, you might as well just have invested in a new one.

Part numbers are your friends. Look up a parts catalog online for it find the part numbers of what you need google just the brand name and the part number and it you get taken to eBay and the parts and numbers checkout then you’re probably safe. Lots of people sell tiny engine stuff on eBay. I’ll buy carbs off eBay all day long compared to amazon.

Someone threw it away because it just stopped working and has never seen a torx screw head. Let alone take apart the whole chassis to see what can be fixed.
The chain hasn't even been sharpened and still serviceable...

I have tried googling the part number on the coil but no luck.
This is the replacements page, but the coil is no more. Also no part number, just internal references:

Anon. I will help you find these numbers or equivilent parts that will work. Everything is in German that I’m finding so it’ll take a bit but I’m not going to give up. I’ll be out of town this weekend so I’ll do what I can from my phone. You’ve given me a project and I’ll accept.

Thank you very much!

I have just received a reponse from IKRA and they say the part is no longer in production.. sad.

This is another coil I found on ebay, looks exactly the same, same 11A.

EAN: 0644221402191
The written brand and model number is just the shop and internal reference I think..

Sent the link to ikra, waiting for a reply with their advice.

That chainsaw is a failry generic clone made in Aisa somewhere and sold under ~20 different names. If you can post a bunch of good pics the parnet company/model can be figured out then you can fairly easily track down spares.

It is based on a McCulloch MS1838 so most any of the 32-38cc coils from them will work.

Big one is the part numbers. Can look up new parts or the equivalent clones.

OP ARE YOU EVEN 100% SURE ITS THE COIL? DID YOU CHECK IT FOR SPARK? DID YOU PUT A SPARK PLUG IN THE CONNECTOR AND PULL THE STARTER CORD AND WATCH FOR A SPARK WHEN IT TURNS?

>> No.1456633

>>1456622
before replacing a coil, I would definitely test it.
as another anon already said, you have to unplug it to test. could be just a short in the on off switch grounding it out. the off switch shorts the coil so it wont spark. if you unplug the switch wire from the coil, and you still have no spark, then the coil is bad, if you do have spark then you have a short in the on off switch wiring. and you can live without that.

FORGOT TO MENTION YOU NEED TO TOUCH THE THREADED END TO THE ENGINE AND WATCH FOR A SPARK IN THE GAP!

IF ITS GOT SPARK YOU HAVE OTHER PROBLEMS! JUST BECAUSE THE PLUG GETS WET DOESNT MEAN THE CARB IS OK. IT COULD BE FLOODING AND CAUSING THE SPARK TO GET DROWNED OUT. YOU NEED TO CHECK ALL POSSIBILITIES BEFORE YOU JUST RULE OUT ONE PART AND ASSUME ITS THE CAUSE!

fucking hell

>> No.1456641

you dont need much spark to get a shitty 2 stroke engine to fire. it could be getting flooded. check the carb. usually 2 stroke carbs are easier to replace than fix. i think this whole project is a lost cause you wasting too much time on it when you have no idea what the exact problem is.

I suggest taking it back to the dump where it belongs

>I saw a spark but very very faint..
if you have any spark then the coil is good
take some 120 grit sandpaper to the magneto
the metal bottom of the coil next to the flywheel, and the magnet in the flywheel.
loosen the coil screw, and adjust the gap.
replace the spark plug
