1446099 No.1446099 [Reply] [Original]

i want to upgrade my dying 2.0GHz HP Intel Core 2 PC.

So i purchases a new motherboard and a new AMD proccessor, i went with the Gigabyte F2A68HM-H, so i tried to assemble all the parts in the beginning and when i turn on the PC nothing happened and only got a black screen, i tried to connect the old graphics card but i need to know.

Should i install the drivers before doing the swap
Should i reinstall windows first

did it beep, and how many beeps?

>> No.1446150

If you don't get anything on startup, you assembled something wrong. Or, it could be one of those cases where the HP proprietary power supply is wired different from standard ones (it happens). If the first is the case, try reseating things like the memory and video card. If the latter, you need a different power supply (and they might be case specific) and you better hope nothing fried.

If you get beeps, as >>1446107 suggested, look up beep codes for that manual and see what you get.

Once you finally get at least a boot screen, then yes you will need to reinstall Windows. It will crash long before you can update drivers.

Gonna take a wild stab and say you didn't plug in the 4 pin power on the board

>> No.1446191

>>1446167
As long as you don't format the drive, no. Just look up where they are on the hard drive and move it to your new profile.

or PSU is dead. I just went through this on the 4 pin mobo connector, missing a leg caused a 'boot' but no video, then a week later no boot at all.

Otherwise, CPU not seated, mobo dead, etc.

1st - use onboard video out, only CPU and 1 stick of ram installed. if it doesnt boot, swap to other ram.
2nd - RMA everything and start over.

>>1446194
Well, it was just a Core 2 in the case before, good money has it the original psu doesn't even HAVE a 4 pin

i bet its an old mechanical hard drive.
do yourself an favor and install a new SSD. the 240GB A400 drives are about 60USD atm. they're the cheapest option and fucking amazing compared to a tick tick tick drive. reinstall windows and use your current drive as a backup. also what the fuck is with people not having backups. either use google drive or find a 2 bay synology or QNAP NAS, install 2 drives in it and run it as a mirrored raid. store anything of value on it. they're expensive but idk how much would you pay to not lose your family photos?

Honestly bro, there's nothing worse saving. Rebuild the turd with the original parts so everything works again, build a brand new PC from the ground up and transfer over what you want to keep. A PSU from that era is gonna be on its last legs, same with the HD, lord knows what the case even looks like. Just start over instead of trying to bring over some 6+ year old crap that is going to hobble your new system anyway.

>>1446299
i can understand people reusing an old PSU. only they've never had a PSU absolutely fucking die and dont understand most PSUs are only meant to last a few years. so i agree, dont skimp on the 100$ it will cost for a decent 80+psu from a reputable brand like corsair. part of the 80+ certification is actually testing it to make sure it can output the stated load. also check the 80+ website to make sure your model is listed. those without certification still put labels stating it's certified when it's not.

in that case i need a graphics card and a new SDD HDD, i purchase parts slowly.

can you enter bios?
are you sure gpu works?
what exactly is the problem

why are you people insisting he should reinstall windows
i went from an intel c2q q8200 to amd ryzen 1600 and it just werked

well i might neeed to try to swap the parts again, is just that when i originally put the old pieces back after the failed boot, i also had the PC not boot properly for 2 weeks, it was turning but insta turning on as well, i dont even remember how i fixed the issue.

make sure you read the manual because sometimes there's a jumper you need to install for it to boot

back to school and black friday are the best times to find good deals on computers....I don't know what coupons might be out there, but it's worth looking

.....and or even buy gift cards at a discount, for what ever store you want to purchase one from

buy a new desktop and upgrade parts as you can afford them

>> No.1446923

>>1446853
yes I did in fact, the one thing I couldn't connect was the tiny white plug of the old Graphics card, could not find the right place.

>> No.1446930

Well OP, start by checking to see if anything lights up on the mobo when you press the power button. Most boards will have some kind of indicator light. No light no power. Also check to make sure the HP had a standard pinout on the front panel connector, sometimes they're not standard. Like others have pointed out, you should ditch the old case and PSU.
Sounds like you're on a budget so I'd go with a 500w EVGA, I use them at work all the time, they're between 30-45 US dollars depending on the day. Where I live you can get same grade PSU manufacturers use for 20-25 which means they really cheap out if it costs that little for the consumer.
Budget case I'd get this. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rosewill-FBM-X1-Black-Steel-Plastic-ATX-Mini-Tower-Computer-Case/172678588431
Its 25 plus tax and free shipping.

if it doesn't turn on, maybe he messed up the case connectors
take anything metal like scissors and bridge the two pins that say power or some variant of that

>ditch case
Bad advice, as long as ports aren't broken there's no reason to, unless you are a soiboy that wants a 'cute' PC.

>> No.1448173

>>1448127

Its a prebuilt HP propitiatory case, riddled with unconventional assembly parts and accessories. I wouldn't be surprised if they even went as far to messed with the psu pins just to fuck with you.

Should have replaced the case and the psu with just about anything (preferably 80+) when choosing on that upgrade path..even a pizza box case will do while waiting for the postman.Op can then carry those onto future builds without having to fuck around with special tools, nuts, bolts and physical/clearance restrictions with their new oem parts.

>>1446299
>build brand new from the ground up.
Best advice , unless Op wants to have a gremlin infested sticky taped rig forever.

Did he even get new ram? I didn't see it mentioned.

>> No.1448175

Grab a Dell T30 when they go on sale for $279. You can't beat OEMs for value right now.

the fuck are you talking about? That connector was originally referred to by cheap PSU makers as the "Pentium 4" connector. We've had them for years, first generation Socket 939 even had it.

>> No.1449674

Does it power up at all or does it just not turn on? Could be that you missed the connector to the actual case's power button. It's happened to me before

Assuming it's all wired correctly then no Post is usually either unsupported or bad of the following: CPU, RAM, PSU

might be the power connection of that gpu, so without it, no video output, and depending on what amd CPU you got, it might not have an integrate GPU that it could switch to.

Maybe research your GPu model and find the specifications of the cables and adapt it to the new situation
