how to build an efficient gnome-style house?

>> No.141718

Question....why the fuck do you want a gnome-style house?

Follow up question....nevermind.

>> No.141717

Your best bet is partial, i.e. the only open spot of the house is facing solar south and the rest can be under earth.

Completely under ground isn't a very efficient approach.

it can be even partially underground. facing solar south is a good idea

Cody Lundin set precedence for this idea. A rebar frame layered with fencing and burlap and then hosed down with gunnite, or shotcrete.

Let it harden, cover with earth, and plant some native low lying shrubs on the top.

Make efforts to regulate the thermal value of your house with very little labor and alter as needed.

Good to go.

Just found out these books are worth quite a bit of money.

I never understood why you guys were so hyped about shipping containers, because, well they are hideous, but last night, I figured one could just bury them under ground. Some sort of insolation would obviously be needed.
Is this doable tho?

I saw a huge pot farm bust on TV where they buried a series of shipping containers underground and made them into hallways and long rooms, even running power and ventilation down there. So yeah, you probably can.

Before you bury a container, make sure it's strong enough and won't collapse on your head. Reinforce it if you must, this is crucial. If you're building an underground household of sorts, you still need an efficient ventilation system. And yeah, isolation so that you won't have to share your house with hordes of bugs.

THIS will be an issue with any of these underground homes
you can reduce the levels by installing a Radon vent
which is simply a pvc pipe with an inline fan (like a bathroom fan)

Yeah a home inspector said we had high radon in out house in PA growing up and dad laughed it off. He died of cancer, mom has had cancer, and my sisters and I have all had thyroid cancer. Like in our twenties. Don't pretend it's just an imaginary bogeyman, mmmkay?
