You're limited to square feet and want to minimize grocery store consumption. That means you need to think vertically and for volume. A garden box would be a good idea. You can concentrate good soil and keep weeds and pests out. Garden boxes can be made cheap out of pallets. Just make sure they're chemical free or, if chemical treated, isolated from the soil.

1.

Tomatoes are a natural choice. I put good, fertilized soil into the box pictured and used this string method:

https://youtu.be/l88Dg9iaD6s

They grew to six feet tall and produced an incredible amount of food. Buy cheap mason jars and lids, can the sauce, and you can have all you need for a year. Bonus points if you can some of it as other things such as salsa, marinara sauce, or chili.

2.

Look at vertical gardening. There are many cool things people build to take advantage of limited space. I don't have suggestions for cost efficiency since I haven't done it.

Any bit helps. Kinda jelly. Used to go all out - spent months raising about 100 veggies from seed in the basement. Then I transplanted them in the backyard and nurtured them. A few weeks later on a nice day, I let our 6 chickens out to stretch their legs.

Ate all my work in less than 20 minutes.

Chickens eat entire plants? I did not know that.

Not him but anyone got a production scale? Have like half an acre or maybe 1 for a big garden next year. I cant garden for shit tho. Considering just mowing a grid and tilling up 6'x6' garden squares and fly through it on the mower. Just grab gloves and grab a few handfuls of johnson grass when the shit gets in my way.

Maybe vine type shit like grapes and tomatoes can go along some old hog panels

Cow panels work great but they might be out of budget for some. I like to use them to wall off my garden from faggots and animals. Wife got a kick out of the planter i tossed on the gate so it looks like a 4 sided tomatoe wall.

However. On a budget? 20,000 feet of polypropylene rope "bailing twine" can be had at all farm supply stores or online.

I use the shit out of it for stuff since my wife inherited a rope making machine. Any anons in north east oklahoma need some 10' 15 strand rope made? Kek.

It's a damned workout i tell you. Been daydreaming about building a motorized version to make cheap tow ropes tho.

chicken might not eat entire plants, but they sure as fuck will trample/dig everything up around said plants and end up killing them.

keep your live stock and/or children away from your garden, or you will regret it.

I want to grow cherry tomatoes in my house's garden area next to my roommate's chives. Can I just toss seeds in the dirt? Why does every guide require me to go out and get a pot and store-bought soil first?

>> No.1415896

>>1415867
Most guides assume that the dirt just laying around your house is garbage and starting in a container is the most reliable way to get going.

If the earth there has been worked and supplemented and you can easily dig your hands into it you should be fine. It is getting pretty late to start tomatoes so you might want seedlings (small plants already growing in a little pot) to jumpstart things. Just till up the dirt you want to plant in nice and deep, plant your seedlings with the slightly roughed up root ball all the way under the surface and dirt slightly up the stem of the plant and follow care and feeding instructions. Maybe hit it with some miracle grow in the water according to directions. Cherry tomatoes are usually either bushy (they stand alone but done mind a cage) or viney (they need something to hold them up, cage at the least.

best luck.
