Finally finished my vise stop I was talking about in the machining thread.

Wood is roughly 100 years old out of an old family armoire that my dad saved from a burn pile. I think oak but not sure. Same resin and pigment as last time. Neutral in the light and aqua when glowing.

This picture is the resin glowing in my living room with the lights on after charging it in the sun for a few minutes.

It's not polished. Just got a layer of stain on it. Will possibly hit the entire piece with a coat of resin then polish.

Intention was to sell as a wall hanger but the more I work with it the less I want to sell. Mostly because of the age of the wood. I have a few other pieces from the same armoire that I can work up.

I have another one I did on cheap plywood. Has more powder in the resin so it's a little brighter.


Have more pigment on the way too. This stuff doesn't have any real color in normal light when not glowing. The pigments on their way are florescent in pretty much any light.

Not much, I only went up to like 400 grit. If I decide to go back and hit it with a clear topcoat I'll go up to like 1500 or 2000 and then hit it with my buffers to make it super shiny.

Oh btw, this may be blasphemy on /diy/, but the easiest option is buying an Epson V550 and selling it (given that you're not very much into photography apart from these slides), they go for around $250 and you can probably sell it for more than half that as 'barely used'. Or even just cranking your scanning trhough and return it within whatever time limit for returns the (web)shop has, although I don't particularly condone that, but it is an option

Currently turning my fifty-two year old pole barn in to a garage. It's 40'x40' and will have two 16' insulated overheads on front and a 16' lean too off the side. Concrete floor, fully insulated and all new metal.
Will start raising and repairing posts this week, then start building forms for a concrete footer.

Nothing special: made a single beveled knife for leather cutting (I wanted a 'scalpel' type blade) out of a broken file. The oak looked bland so I did Shou Sugi Ban on it.

Happy with the result. Tempered to RH of 58-59.

Fixed the old HP-35 calculator that was lying around in the engineering club offices. It didn't turn on and apparently hadn't worked in years.

Turns out the power switch contacts were just so filthy from forty years of gunk that they no longer connected. A little alcohol later and it works fine.

Electronic dart scoreboard I'm building. Only does cricket. Basically you just plug in what you get and it does points and lights up the appropriate LEDs. My phone camera blows so the LEDs don't look right in the pic.

I made this for my gf, she does dog/cat grooming for some extra money. She always had a problem of where to put her most-used tools, scissors and combs mostly. If you put them on the table the dog/cat can kick them off.

So I made her this toolholder, with a french cleat at the back of it so she can use it on both sides of the grooming table.

Was thinking about mounting my drill onto a trailer jack for automation. Set up the koozie, push button, press exact pressure and time and temp i want and then line up another one.

Dutch. I wonder if the grapes are any good for making wine. The previous owners said the grapes were delicious so when they're ripe I'll give winemaking a try. The vine was attached onto the old fence so I placed it on supports for the time being to prevent damage. Set of 8" chefs knives completed as part of a commission, lot of work went into them and fairly happy with the end result.
>Steel is a spine of 304SS welded to D6 high carbon, high chromium semi-stainless, that was kept at 400C while being joined with 309L SS rods
>that's about as silly as it sounds to try and do, I didn't get too horribly burnt
>Bolsters and everything else is 304SS, they are a full tang all the way through with lots of holes to keep down the weight
>Inlay is twisted wire, stainless, brass and copper
>top to bottom handles- Ringed Gidgee, Buloak and Budgeroo- 6 coats of Carnauba/Bees wax finish

Lot of surface grinding, the timbers are so damn tough it'd make you cry and doing the dovetail fittings to keep them in between the pommel-bolster was a huge PIA.
Heat treating was kind of nuts, ended up doing 2 x 6hr stress relief anneals though the whole process, then plate-pressure air quench and 3 x tempering cycles so they ended up around 60-61HRC.
D6 a fun metal to use and one that's not used a great deal in any industry and makes for a massive amount of carbide structures giving a really toothy cutting edge and quite a cool 'wood grain' running through the steel. The downside is that its a massive bastard to to grind with its tungsten content, so pack a lunch and extra belts... you're going to be at it a while

I got some 0.5mm wire, 304SS, Brass and Copper.
You can use thicker or smaller but the 0.5mm (around 25 gauge) seems to be a good mix of thickness and strength in this case.
Secure the brass and SS in a clamp at one end, then get an L-shaped object (allen key works great) and tie or loop the two strands to it, just run the drill very slowly and keep an even, gentle tension on the wires as they twist up together, keeping in mind they'll also get shorter in length as well. Once you've got them as twisty as you like, take them off and make sure they're not going to loop over back on itself.
At this point they're 'work hardened' a little bit, you could anneal them if you want

Inlay is sort of an art in of itself, there's probably a dozen ways to do it, depending on the material but stuff like wood, G10 and other handle materials is comparatively soft. I'll generally mark out how wide I want the wire to go around the sections, depending on how thick the inlay is, in this case its about 1mm or a little less, I'll get one of my poor abused teeny tiny drills of around 1-1.5mm and drill into the handle at the point I want to start and the point I want to end. At least half a cm or 1/4" seems good
Then its a matter of carving down into the material about the depth of your inlay's thickness.
Poke the wire in the hole, tiny drop of superglue on the end and let it cure
Wrap the inlay and gently tap it down as you go until you get to the end hole, depending on the length, a vise-grip or some kind of clamp is very handy to keep it taught so it doesn't spoing everywhere.
Note your hole, the inlay, make a 90deg bend with pliers and then snip the end off to the depth, poke it in there and a drop of glue

Generally thats the real basics, often on inlay I gently punch it down to the handle surface with a small cold chisel, punch or the like, then a very light sanding so its smooth.
Its one of those 'dead arts' because its a huge pain in the arse

I still use a lot of O1 (mostly because I have a bit of it around!) when provoked enough I'll use 1095 but it can be a tricky steel if you don't treat it well.
80CRV is a real monster, some super tough, big blades are perfect for it.

At the moment I'm sort of on a semi-stainless, high carbon and high chromium kick- D2, D6 and A2 steels.
The longer I use A2 the more I'm sort of convinced that its probably going to eke out the O1 as my steel of choice as a bit of an all-rounder. Not great corrosion resistance, but I've been fiddling around with my heat treats and getting some fucking scary results in testing- especially under torsion, heavy bending, edge deflection and deformation. It just seems to shrug off abuse and hold an edge beyond what I expected.
I probably wouldn't make a huge blade out of it, but the 3-10" knives its a good fit for a lot of use/abuse I reckon.

1095 works fine for me since I mostly make puukko, so you're looking at thin blades no more than 4 inches long and I seem to get a great quench on it with peanut oil. I tried to use it for a 8-9 inch leuku blade and that didn't harden at all (after accounting for decarb), only 58-59 Rockwell after the quench. I switched my leuku o 80CrV2 and it feels like it talks to me during treatment and tempering. Had no bad luck with it yet.

I do want to make a few Myerchin-like sheepsfoot offshore systems for some sailing friends of mine. Do you have a saltwater corrosion resistant stainless you'd recommend to a novice for a knife that isn't a bitch to work with?

Martensitic stainless is a real science unto itself.
AEBL, Nitro-V and 12C27 are probably the 'easiest' of the current, in production SS's out there which provide very good corrosion resistance and will provide a reliable cutting edge + toughness with the very basic heat treatments.

That being said, the very basic heat treatments are not something most backyard knife makers will want to get into. Mostly because the end result of a bare bones heat treat really isn't much better than a mass produced SS knife (which is usually in the fairly awful to ordinary range!). You can outsource the heat treat to some commercial places, but unless you're sending them a whole crate of blades its sort of an additional cost factor that outweighs the end product.
After that you end up with an 'ok' knife, but as a one off most of the really serious SS blades tend to be in various crazy super-steels (and they really are very good steels) but they cost the earth in materials, the heat treats are at fucking crazy temperatures, the tempering is long and arduous along with cryogenic tempering cycles.
It really doesn't make a good fit for bespoke, one off knives as by the time you've processed one of them its a massive sink in money and time.
That's just in my opinion having worked with a a few SS's over the years. You can do it with enough investment, but making them pay for themselves is very difficult due to the overheads, stainless can be as good as carbon and tool steels but getting it there is a journey which only really suits mass manufacture.

Decarb you can get around a few ways if its a problem. Generally on a lot of carbon steels they'll lose a bit during your normalising, grain reduction and annealing cycles. So I'll usually get half a dozen and pop them into a stainless tool foil pouch together for those cycles in the kiln. You can also look at some of the paint-on anti scale compounds out there which do fairly well too.

Last year I was given an 88 bronco. The frame was rotted to hell so I had a buddy send me a piece from his junkyard. Over a weekend I dropped the gas tank and leaf springs, cut out the piece that was shit, and welded in the new. I've replaced all that. I've tried a lot before I got to this point. I'm a mechanic by trade so the fact that I'm scratching my head about it is really frustrating but my dad is also with 40 years experience and he doesn't really know anymore.
One thing we found as I tore it down was that bank ones valves indicate there's no problems over there. Bank 2 looks like it hasn't been firing right at all.
My new theory I've gotta look into is because these things are batch fire. 1234 injectors share one circuit, 5678 share another.
All in all, it's not that big of a deal to me that I did all this work. Like every gasket looks like it was ready to go soon anyway, and the cam did have some wear so I'm kind of glad I did that anyway just to know it's good. The timing chain was the biggest thing that made me not feel like I wasted a day because while it wasn't bad enough to jump a tooth, it was pretty loose. Also, I planned to do the headgaskets soon (next summer) anyway just for the peace of mind. Not to mention this is actually the first time I've had an engine this far apart ever in 8 years of experience in the field so I'm learning shit like crazy.

The thought definitely crossed my mind, and cost was a consideration, as well as timeline.
It's a fifty two year old FFA barn with a good structure which made it a worthy candidate for a rebuild. The house was the same deal, over one hundred years old with good bones so I extensively remodeled instead of a complete tear down. As long as the dollars and sense is right I would rather rebuild then start over.

I spent a few hours yesterday recreating my grandma's 1950s address sign, which broke sometime in the 80s. Took about 2 hours to cut and jigsaw the woodshape, prime and paint, and nail the letters on. not perfect but im happy with the way it turned out

I'm not quite worried about it being to code and it's not finished, I still need to add a lower rail around it, angle braces underneath and some lattice. Also steps because the old ones were so bad I couldn't use them as a template and I was getting annoyed at the 106* heat. The old deck was held together with nails, so anything is an improvement and who ever buys the property will want to put a new mobile there with nicer steps; this is just to make it usable and comply with park regulations.

Nope. I'm just using it for recreational fishing and crabbing so I don't need too much open space anyways. If I have a cabin I think I'll go on more trips around the Puget Sound and Vancouver island. I finished off a couple of 'modern trade knives' and a few kitchen utility knives today which turned out pretty neat. I'll get a pic of them tomorrow when its not all dark and a frozen shithole.
Looked at the poor little hunting knife which I've been neglecting for about a month now and was going to start on it, but a shipment of A2 came in so I'm just at the stage before heat treat on two chefs knives, couple of paring knives and a damn herb chopper of all things... so a puuko will have to wait awhile longer before I can make things I want.
