Best place in London to buy cheap 18mm plywood? I'm looking to build a bookshelf and I'll need two sheets of 1220*2440mm plywood at 18mm thick, anyone know the cheapest place to get it? Preferably somewhere that will cut it for me, I unfortunately don't have a table saw

>> No.1396546

B+Q will supply and cut for free. You'll find it cheaper in timber merchants but won't have the facility to cut.

>> No.1396551

>>1396546
I had a look at B&Q, it's £30+ a sheet, can't think of anywhere cheaper?

>> No.1396562

>>1396551
If you need it cutting there is nowhere cheaper except if you go direct to a merchant who will tell you to piss off because they're not interested in your poxy tenner.

>>1396562
Calm down, I had a look at Selcos and they sell their sheets for less and do cutting, I'll probably just do it there, I was just wondering if anyone here found somewhere good for cheap wood prices as well as somewhere who could cut it, always good to check around to find you best options after all

>> No.1396572

>>1396540
£30 for an 18mil sheet of ply isn't bad at all.

Alternately, I can pick you up in my Transit, we go get a sheet at a wood yard for £14, and I'll even let you have a go at it using the Makita tracksaw if you're up for a bit of the ol tumble-dry later.

Im not being mean Im actually quoting what they will definitely tell you. Most places in London for timber and wood are on industrial estates pretty out of the way.

Do you have a van? Or were you planning on carrying the cut up pieces of plywood home. Perhaps your plan is to load them into a car?

If you do plan on getting it cut somewhere like B & Q you might find that their cuts aren't super precise, after all the people cutting probably aren't wood machinists.

Also, how intricate is this bookshelf going to be exactly? Do you just plan on screwing or nailing all of the cut pieces together?

>> No.1396732

>>1396540
I'm in london too, I have a van if you want to carry the wood home, we could have a beer afterwards.

>> No.1396746

>>1396726
I've got a van, that's not the problem, it's just that I don't have a table saw at home, though I really should invest in a circular saw. Realistically the measurement don't have to be completely precise, as long as similar pieces are the same size which is possible as they don't adjust the blade each time a duplicate piece is made. From what I've heard Selcos is much better at getting the dimensions right, I'll probably just go there and do it, seems to be the better option

>> No.1396749

>>1396726
>cuts aren't super precise
Not OP.
Have had a few sheets cut, accuracy has been to 0.5mm at worst.
I usually take along a cutting diagram along to ensure that the parts at least match in case their sizes are out.

>> No.1396773

>>1396746
>>1396749

Might as well go for it then m8.

If you did feel like being a bit more adventurous though a decent circular saw wouldn't cost that much, just so long as you don't get a battery powered one.

Also if it's possible I would pick out the sheets of ply yourself to avoid anything that's particularly warped or full of defects.

Living in the UK is no good mang. My wife’s 8 year old son was drawing pictures at home one day around Christmas time. He was coloring in Santa but had lost a few crayons so he made Santa’s beard black.

The NSC-mandated camera in his bedroom caught sight of this drawing and thought it was Muhammed. The next morning there were 30 constables at my home swarming the place and confiscating everything. I no longer have a single cooking untensil. They took my wife’s hair straightener because they said that could be used for injustices towards immigrants. They took my wife’s son away and sentenced him to 3 years in prison and another 3 years of “Reform” after that.

Pretty strange that you have 18mm plywood, especially since 18mm is a size in between those of standard British dimensions of 3/4", and 5/8".

Not actually true.

The moto-saw course is required to purchase a professional grade 'mobile' power saw which includes chain saws, reciprocating saws, rotary saws etc. Stationary saws have different requirements.
This means battery ones over 14v, all petrol/diesel ones, and motors over 275w.

That means you can use domestic saws all you want. Like smaller jig saws, or dremels are perfectly fine.

There is a small fee for a level I background check and the course is only 5 hours. There is no test.

The Chainsaw License requires you to already have the moto saw course, and its purpose is to certify operators for commercial use of a chainsaw.
It is a very strict license there is no course only a test and the yearly license is 50£

Here is more information.
http://www.hse.gov.uk/treework/safety-topics/chainsaw-operator.htm

You will need proof that you own approved safety equipment and clothing.
