have you guys figured out your expenses for driving?
always got to think hard about this

15 MPG with current fuel prices 2.50 a gallon
1 gallon for 15 miles 2.50/15=0.1666 (round up to 0.17)

$55 for 2 thousand miles gives me a healthy maintenance and tire budget
55/2000=0.0275 (round up to .03)

so I have $.20 a mile without including insurance or that this vehicle will ever need to be replaced
I get a good vehicle under 1 thousand $ that offers years of dependable service so adding $.02 is enough

insurance
$528 a year

so like $.22 a mile without insurance
with insurance more like $.34 a mile

I had a 1987 c70 10 wheeled dumo truck a couple years ago.

So yeah.

If local buy easy to work of old gassers and easy to source deisle.

If highway grab a gass sipping pos with common parts found in the junkyard.

If you pic related the only motor you will need is a dc vibratory while the DOT faggots fuck you like they do each other...

pic not mine but sometimes close to it
I actually have 3 trucks

and the DOT don't do shit to me
I know other places the whole state has the emissions testing and some places has to pass inspection

not here
rural Midwest we can literally drive anything without getting in trouble

Choose a dollar amount / distance.

I do 53 cents to the kilometer.

Good luck, maybe get another job instead. When it breaks down, and it will, can you afford to fix it ?

>80s ford with an idi 6.9

You can MacGyver that shit until the cows come home if you have a bit if knowledge and ingenuity. Plus they're cheap to begin with and pretty much run on any cleanish oil

>> No.1371471

I just use the fuel cost and double it to account for wear, tear, maintenance, operational and registration costs

Then my daily hours go on top of that.

Damn I want a 6.9 or 7.3 idi someday. Right now I’ve got two f150s - a 2wd 96 with the i6/5spd which is my daily and I’m fixing up an 85 4x4, 300 and 4 spd.

Sometimes I think a 2wd Ranger with a 4 cyl would be an ideal daily driver. I’d get anywhere from 5 to 10 more mpg and parts/maintenance would be cheaper. I do love the OBS f-series so I can put up with the extra costs. 15 mpg mixed kinda sucks but the extra room is great, especially when something needs replaced. Pic related is my 85, needs a lot of work but firstly I want to do a Duraspark conversion.

How many miles do you drive per year? I get the same mpg cost ratio and it looks like it would be around $2,000 to drive 15k miles a year in fuel alone.

>> No.1371490

>>1371109
Probably. But if not a whole new car for $1000 is still cheaper than getting an expensive car in the hope it never breaks.

As a euro i'm baffled at this shit. I know you guys drive trucks but holy shit i didn't know it was this bad, even an old van my father had went through 14l/100km and that was terrible at 1.20eur/liter

They need big engines to maintain highway speeds.

Wheras here in Europe my 1.9L diesel pickup does 8L/100km. Top speed is around 100km/hr with an economic cruising speed of 65km/hr.
I barely ever drive over 65km/hr which is less than 35mi/hr

a vehicles purchase price has no relation to the amount of time or miles it lasts

I have more than one truck but for the last few years I have drove 95% of the time on a 1980s Chevrolet half ton that I got for $900
truck has 210 thousand miles on it and it is realistic to possibly get over 300 thousand on the same motor and transmission and everything

any vehicle I ever had never needed more than things I consider regular maintenance and I got a van for $300 still have it and its a good van
new brake line and a throttle body rebuild is expected at a certain time but those don't cost much at all
throttle body gasket kit is like $30
25 foot roll of brake line and some hardware is under $30
new fuel pump at 80 thousand miles is acceptable

my bigger flatbed truck is twice is old as I am
been on the road over 40 years getting close to 50 years

got to change all those fluids and filters on a regular schedule
and I mean all those fluids
motor oil
power steering fluid
brake fluid
transmission fluid
differential oil
power steering fluid
anti freeze

I put 1/2 to 3/4 ounce 2 stroke oil in a gallon of gasoline
helps the whole fuel system - pump and injectors and all of it
just a little extra lubrication and corrosion protection

does anyone over there have a full size truck?
no v8 motors?
no one has wood sides on their truck and piles crap up all the way to the top then continues to drive 60 MPH?

>> No.1371531

and you guys know my flatbed truck is only getting 8MPG on a good day...
12 foot long flatbed 3/4 ton truck
but the motor does have some high performance cam shafts on it

was driving that truck 70 miles a week for a over 2 years

No, you have a proper truck (although smaller) and vans. Occasional american pickup or a hummer sticks out like a sore thumb and even then they're driven by city dwellers that can't afford a proper expensive car.

There are toyotas though.

Oh i forgot to mention trailers. There's a lot of them since we don't really have pickups and don't like big cars in general. If you don't have one you just rent it.

Same, I had an f-superduty with an idi but it had so little compression it needed ether in the middle of summer.

I actually dd'd obs fords for years but the gas was killer, especially being in Canada. I actually just sold my '92 4x4 and now daily a 1990 2wd ranger with the 2.9, averaging 23 mpg now which is very nice. And I'm almost done restoring this '79, part if the reason I sold the obs

When you are allowed to have them you'd be surprised to realise how much you like them.

>When you are allowed to have them you'd be surprised to realise how much you like them.

Not that guy...but my truck isn't even that big (Dodge 1/2 ton) and, for daily driving, I'd still prefer something smaller. Unless I'm hauling something (which isn't unusual and the reason I have a truck in the first place), the ONLY advantage for me is the increased visibility due to ride height. I suppose, too, there's a bit of a safety advantage if I get into a crash. But then, that only really matters if everyone else is driving a big car, innit?

Everything else is a liability or an additional expense. Far as I'm concerned, most people should be commuting in something more akin to a fancy go-kart than what the average American drives.

>> No.1371649

>>1371598

I have a dodge 1/2 ton too. 3rd gen.

I come from hilux and frontier territory. Anything bigger than either of those are cabover commercial vehicles.

Our roads are small enough that as soon as you leave the highway (2 lane counterflow) you are on roads where someone has to pull off the road or back up if you meet another car. It gets to the point where I am clipping bush with both mirrors at the same time. For me the actual size is not the problem, even though I am sitting on then wrong side, but the visibility is pretty crap l, even from a early '00 vehicle.

The whole cost of parts is situational as I can import parts cheaper than I can buy hilux and frontier parts.

The worst thing about it is that this truck is so comfortable and pretty quick. I would find it hard to replace with any other pickup.

Visibility is shit tho

>allowed to have them
But anon, we can have them, it's just they're impractical and way too big for our needs. They even sell them locally. I think it's a cultural thing, we don't live in mcmansions either.

>When you are allowed to have them

This is what really grinds my gears about Americans. They buy into the propaganda and actually think they are more free.

In most countries you can buy whatever the fuck car you want. If it is not sold through the manufacturer it might be really expensive but you can still buy it. In the US if it is not 25yo well DHS will crush it on the dock.

About the only area Americans have more freedom is guns and speech. That is like saying "you can choose any bread you like but we are going to serve it with a dog shit filling no matter what"

Totaled a 97 mazda b2200 that 4 generations of my family owned. Was gutless as fuck but like having a car with a bed. Put the motor in a 5 speed ranger after that. Only sold cause i am a fat and hate tagging 7 cars in town

KEK.

I had a small block that got 4mpg. Also had to buy 91 and a bottle of octane booster 15 gallon fill up.

She was all about the smiles per gallon. Old rust bucket half ton with a turbo 400 and a $6,000 built small block.

>Mfw flatten lobes on the cam
>mfw dad was saving parts for a motor
>mfw "borrow" 5.10 lift cam
>mfw no power breaks
>mfw no power steering
>mfw hold it to the floor until valves float >mfw hit 45mph
>mfw 2ndgear.jpg
>mfw tire screech

She was fun as fuck tho. Sleepers are the only way to go.

Only sold it because it was damp one morning and i was hung over not paying attention. Hit 55mph sign at city limits and punched it to hit 2nd and cruise 50 in drive. "I made a mistake." Spun off into the ditch and said fuckit.

You should unhook your back break lines and put a plug in the master cylinder for a weekend.

I had a 4 pinger with a lift and 31x10.50 R15s. Was a power breaking bitch. I had sideways black marks all over town.

Dude that had it before me had a leak and plugged it.

Was fun as fuck. Everyine in those sorry about your dick pickups and i would smokeshow the fuck out of them. A couple of windshield washers sprayers in the bed full of bleach after the smoke starts made it even better.

Just be careful stopping and stay out of traffic. Fun as fuck!
