Hi /diy/,
I strated this thread since I have a plumbing question and didn’t see a thread I could post it on. I’m a first time poster and not an avid lurker so I didn’t want to start a general pumping thread. Now for the question :
I am trying to add a branch to my water line to put an outdoor garden hose spigot. Under the house I have galvanized piping. I plan on using pvc. As you can see on pic related, theres already a pvc patch. I am planning on replacing it with a “T” compression joint and feeding it from there. Only concern is that the corrosion on the top side of the galvanized piping is pretty bad. Is it still doable? Any tips or suggestions are appropriated as well.

Want to live off the grid. Would need money. What do I do? I don't mean I won't have a car, I could always commute to a job and shit, but that isn't preferable. Stocks might work, but for that one needs experience, communication, and money, and besides, something could always go wrong. Look into livestock. Cow-calf operation or dairy. I believe fish farms are quite efficient in output to input. Or you could buy your land and rent it out to farmers. Could put up some greenhouses and grow "tomatoes" or actual tomatoes. Or poultry. You can always add a hipster element to it. Like call the livestock "freerange" or "vaccine free" or whatever bs buzzword is going around.

What are some good resources to get one started with needlepoint?

I'm a relative outsider to the art of sewing. As a permanent bachelor, most of my work with a needle and thread has been in the form of crude patches on sheets and clothing never intended to be shown to people; clumsy and ugly, but strong enough to outlast the rest of the garment. Once, I made a stuffed animal from plans--but that's about as complex a work as I've done.

I bought one of these cordless rotary tool kits from eBay recently for a specific task I needed sorting. It arrived and it worked a charm and I was pleased. But then when I went to charge the battery in the charging port, the plug started sparking and smoke plumes emitted and the port was dead. I forgot to check the input volt before plugging it into my EU wall.

So the charging port is fried, but the battery is fine. I cannot find a charging port from WEN on eBay or Amazon and the official store has told me they don't deliver outside of the US.

So my question is - how do I get my hands on a WEN charging port to charge my battery? Will any power tool charger do? If so, do the voltage stats need to be identical otherwise it'll fry the battery? Can I repair the damaged charging port? Is there an alternative method to charge the battery without a charging port?

Wiping with clorox might be sufficient.

Spray kilz is not that hard to use as well, and it blocks mold. We once painted a ghetto house where the walls were literally black for the lower two or three feet. We just put one coat of kilz with a roller and painted over that.

Yes it's messy as fuck. A roller also gives thicker coats which you need. Two coats minimum. Get a ladder and when you roll go all the way from the top to the bottom of the wall. Like one giant pass, then do the whole wall like that. That way the paint dries fully from side to side. Grinds my gears when I see ppl rolling it up and down a little all over the place. That gives blotchy results and it's very apparent when the light hits it at the right angle. Something like pic related. Go all the way from the floor to the ceiling with your rolls, don't break it up into sections

Your efficiency goes in the garbage as soon as your batteries discharge past ~1.3V each but it works. I made one out of old laptop lipos that was good enough.

Sentience as a concept is near-meaningless though, even insects are considered to inhibit it. Is ridding your apartment of bedbugs unethical? Maybe, but that shouldn't stop a sane person from doing it. Hell it's said even plants are technically sentient. Does that means plants shouldn't be eaten? No, it means sentience doesn't have jack shit value when it comes to defining animal rights. It means you have a perceptual ability that supersedes that of a rock. Congratulations.

If you want a word with some actual fucking weight to cling to, go with sapience.

Don't blanket-define every animal with flowing blood as being equally deserving of our compassion. It's patently shallow, ignorant and frankly you're hurting the animals that really are deserving of it, by placing them among the other rubble.

You can make a case for pigs, but cows really just aren't up there when it comes to being worth more than the weight of their ass.

List of animals that are (surprisingly(to you)) more deserving of animal rights than cows:
>crows, magpies, jays
>parrots, parakeets
>octopuses, manta rays
>raccoons
>numerous others

In closing, it's a pretty reliable assumption that herbivores are a waste of your compassion. (no, that isn't a jab at vegans(exclusively)). Pigs are omnivores in case you were unaware.

You actually seem like you're open to the topic which is nice to see.

The reason "sentience" is valuable is very simple- it is the one trait which if taken away from a human would render it pretty much meaningless to care for that human. It would be a human vegetable with no capacity for well being or suffering. Essentially a rock

The reason it is wrong specifically to kill cows is because cows are also sentient. There's no trait difference between a cow and a human which, if applied to the human instead of the cow, would make you accept killing the human via farming for profit. Example trait most people intuitively bring up (including yourself) is lesser cognitive capability. But when you apply that trait to a human, say, a retarded human- CLEARLY it is not okay to farm retards and holocaust them for profit. Thus the idea that you can distinguish between differing levels of sentience/cognitive complexity becomes null.

As for bed bugs in that case yeah man, sane vegans aren't unreasonable. You have some pests infesting your house and they can't speak english so you can't tell them to fuck off? By all means it is your right to kill them and defend your property.

>sentience is the trait which defines human value
It's a cornerstone, obviously. In the same sense that the ability to float is a cornerstone of what defines a ship's value, and yet we value ships highly - and a dirty old plastic bottle, which inhibits this same trait, not very much.
Sentience exists on many levels, and you shouldn't pretend each such level implies the same inherent value.

You speak of suffering, and well-being. but what do you believe these terms to define?
Pain is a mere signal, used by the body to indicate that your current state of being is harming your (physical) body.

You can design a machine to recognize 'pain', does that make it sentient? This applies to every emotion, it is a response of your body to a certain set of circumstances. The only reason we haven't been able to train computers those well yet is because the range of circumstances and variables is too great for manual input. Or so I presume.

So why do we value humans so highly then? Sure sounds like I'm just some nihilistic PoS breaking down everything that we hold dear.
The difference between humans and every other being is is our exceptional cognitive abilities.
This, exclusively.
Mind you that even a genuine retard is still miles ahead of any animal when it comes to complex thought - thought, you might think, what's it about that? Right. Language. We boast an unbelievably impressive ability to comprehend and form language. All part of our cognitive package.
This high level of communication is only found among ourselves and other primates.

Our ability to abstract, recognize and describe is what makes us human. Or at least, what places us above everything else that exists (currently) in this world.

>so why do effectively-braindead humans still hold such high value
They look like us. It's empathy, mostly.
That's unconscious brainwork so don't look farther than that.

>>1378909

Probably also has to do with our religious (past) , you know, from before we had the information about all that psychology stuff. Sure was easy to take all that complex human mind stuff and just call it a soul. Well, seems that way retrospectively. And obviously even retards had a soul, that's just a little show of good will we went and put out there.

Look, I'm gonna ask you plain and simple; what is it about cows that pulls your heartstrings?
Would you condone ripping apart a bunch of them if they were, like the aforementioned bedbugs, infesting someone's living space?
I'm not gonna spin around this any more than I already, without good reason, have: You don't give a shit about sentience.
The only reason you feel bad for cows is because they're big, warm, and filled with blood.
That's reasonable. I understand why that triggers a compassionate response. It's natural, but not reasonable. It's on the same spectrum as those anime tards who actually become emotionally dependent on their imaginary girlfriends. An emotional response -lacking- critical thought.

Cows are barely more than machines. They eat, shit, and try to not-die long enough to have a couple offspring.

To repeat what I've said in my first post, if you choose to show compassion for every living being equally (excluding plants because 'lol') - you're only hurting those who are actually in need of it. Imagine of firefighters stopped to soak every house they passed on-route to the burning one.

Does a cow grieve as much as a human when it loses one of its offspring? Does it have the same long lasting effects?
If you, as you have stated, believe that the cognitive abilities of a being is of no effect to their ability to perceive, for example, suffering - I plainly cannot take you seriously.

Appealing to the group is arbitrary. When you say the valuable difference is "being human", there is an implicit claim that there is a trait difference between a human and a cow that creates that value difference. Humans and cows are objects made up of traits. If you tweak either of their traits enough, they will become the same object logically speaking. So again, you need to specify the actual trait difference between the groups rather than arbitrarily stating Group A has more value than Group B.

>>1379179
You are now coming across in bad faith imo. This is not a difficult point for any rational person to understand, and if you are going to pretend that you are honestly bewildered by the position "we should not needlessly holocaust billions of sentient beings every year" then I think the discussion is over.

It's very simple. If you think it is wrong for me to needlessly kill a human, you need to either concede it is wrong to do so to lesser sentient beings as well, OR name the trait difference between humans and those other beings that if applied to the humans would justify needlessly killing them in the same context. Basically- form a consistent argument that does not arbitrarily appeal to a group.

And like I pointed out, if you think "less sentience/intelligence" is the reason it is okay to forcibly slaughter billions of cows, chickens, and pigs every year, then to be logically consistent any human who is measurably less intelligent (there are severely retarded humans who meet this criteria) you'd be giving the thumbs up to brand, mutilate, and slaughter for profit.

First of all you're grossly misusing the term holocaust, quite to the extent I'm convinced it's a crime in several countries.

That aside, you still continue to base your entire argument on the premise that ''sentience'' is of unbelievable value, if not plainly being the exclusive trait that provides such value.
I have already, in detail, explained to you why I do not agree with this premise. You have yet to provide any arguments against this.

As for your ever-present insistence on equivalency between taking a human or animal life; you want know why we don't go around murdering people? Because we don't like to be murdered ourselves.
It's a simple and age-old social agreement; don't do upon others that which you wish not be done upon yourself.
Animals do not have this ability, we cannot reason or negotiate with them.

You have previously stated that it would be acceptable to kill insects if you believe they pose a threat to your property (and subsequently dodged my question whether you would apply this same principle to mammals (or cows specifically)), do you believe this extends to humans? Plainly stated, do you believe in the ''right to use deadly force to protect property''?
How about the death penalty?
Needless to say, both of those are considered extreme views by many people.

''Morality'' is none other than to act in the same manner regardless of the presence of authority, and thus consequence.
E.G. you would not steal a chocolate bar from a store when the owner (who can call the police) is looking at you, morality means you would also not do so provided a reasonable or absolute indication that noone would find out if you did. If you disagree with this, please state what you believe to be the definition.

Now, I urge you make an attempt to actually address my arguments and questions (including the previous posts). If not, I can't but conclude you have the argumentative skills of a 9 year old and cease expressing interest in this conversation.

A holocaust by definition is slaughter on a mass scale. I would certainly consider 70 billion animals annually to fit that criteria

You did not provide any refutation of the idea that sentience is of value. You straw manned my position into "all sentience has the same value" when I have never claimed such a thing (clearly a human has more value than a goldfish) and then went on to point out "lesser sentient complexity as your trait."

Look I don't like assuming people are arguing dishonestly, but if you are going to sincerely try and tell me you think no retarded human is less cognitively complex than your average livestock animal, I'm either going to assume you're BSing or you really have not had much experience around retarded people. There are certain retarded people that cant even walk, let alone think in complex language, who spend the majority of their short lives shitting themselves in a wheelchair. Having grown up around dozenz and dozens of debilitatingly retarded people I can very confidently say some were literally lower on the sentience scale than a chicken or a cow.

Then you go on to obsfucate the discussion because "hurr, we can't possibly just reach over 6 inches and pick up basedmilk instead and eat more legumes grains and veggies because uhmm.. firemen tho!"

You indicate nothing remotely inferrable as "cows have a high enough level of sentience to be considered worthy of human compassion". Plain and simple, you state that you do not consider sentience to be a 'spectrum', but rather a single qualifying trait that makes, in this case cows, eligible for human-esque treatment.
If you have changed your stance on this and now acknowledge such a spectrum exists, but believe cows score high enough on this to be eligible, please provide evidence supporting this claim.

I have stated, clearly, why humans express more value for oneanother's life than for that of other animals in my last post. Please read that a second time if you failed to fully comprehend it the first.

Extremely thin. Like, less than a millimeter. To be completely honest, I'm not even certain that it is the plaster that has cracked and not just the paint.

How to create an self supporting construction for two or more plywood sheets? Plywood sheetsizes would be around 60 - 78" * 157,5" (150-200cm * 400cm) and I was thinking there would be a rotating hinge between the slabs. My mother has a cheap G9 fixture in the bathroom installed by a skeevy contractor. It takes 40W G9's but they were too hot (and one burnt out) so she had him replace it with LED (Kindeep 3000k, 3W, 110-130v) which are also a problem; flickering strobe shit when moving hands, not enough lumens, and obviously not the right color temp for a bathroom being yellowish brown. Garbage doesn't even have a website so I'm assuming it's just cheap bulbs he made her overpay for to pocket the difference on chink shit and not the fixture itself.

I don't know much about lighting so what is the "right" thing to throw in them for the best lighting to do her makeup and stuff that doesn't give blue or yellow tinges?

I haven't been able to find a place online that cuts complex shapes like this, but maybe I didn't look hard enough. I have a summer house/ shed on my back garden that is getting incredibly hot in all this heat

It has no ventilation which is the cause so i'm going to put some in. I'm going to put a vent on the front door and one on the back wall.

My question is is two vents at the toppest part of the wall where i've marked red just as effective as letting heat out as two vents on the highest part of the ceiling? I know it won't be as good but i imagine it will be a hell of a lot easier to put vents on the wall than it will be the roof and will it still allow most heat to escape givin they will be the same height as the roof point anyway?

> how retarded would it be to try to strap aluminium heat sinks to my back? it can get that desperate ina ugust in my room
A heat sink increases the area where heat exchange happens. However, the human body already has a very large surface area (compared to e.g. a CPU die), so the increase will be marginal.

Moreover, the human body (and the skin) is optimised for transferring heat to air, even using evaporative cooling (sweat). I doubt you'll find experimental data on this, but I would posit that even if you were to build a giant form fitting heatsink that would both have significant contact over the entire body, and be large enough to significantly increase surface area (again, a CPU package might be 20cm^2 with a radiator being easily 20,000cm^2 or more, that's three orders of magnitude), you'd find at best marginal gains and more than likely would actually get worse performance. Consider also that relative heat conductance will get worse with size - a lot more heat will be transferred from a cpu to the edge of a 10cm high stack of fins, than from your body to the edge of a 50cm or something stack of fins, simply due to the greater distance.

The internet, friend. Between google and youtube you are a quick search away from having mountains of information about literally everything. Hey, you might not do the best job the first couple times around but the more things you do here and there the better you get at doing anything.

>and how successful have you been?

Moderately. I'm damn useful to have around the house. I can fix damn near anything short of blown out electronics (my soldering iron is in the mail) and I know when it's time to get a professional on the phone.

I just love knowing how stuff works and one of the best feelings in the world is standing back and watching something previously broken work like new after you get your dirty dick beaters on it. I'll never learn it all. Never ever. Still, I always look forward to figuring out the next thing.

As I understand it, humans mostly cool themselves through transpiration. A water bed won't do you any good at cooling down since they, pretty much by definition, aren't porous. (and thus won't help evaporate sweat and you'll end up even less ventilated because every point of contact is wet)
If you really want to get creative I guess you could try to get an old spring mattress and punch holes through the top and bottom, then put one or multiple fans under your bed pointing up

Electronics newbie here, I've been messing around with shift registers and a CD4040BE (full analog), and while I've gotten both to work, the behavior is unstable.
While reading through the CD4040's datasheet, I saw it outputs at around 1-7mA, but the maximum input is listed as "+/- 0.1microamps." What the hell does that mean? Should I be putting a 50Mohm resistor in front of my input, or does it just need an extremely stable current? Is there a general rule for what current can be used for these sorts of counters/logic series, or is it all case by case? The abstract/first paragraph says the max input is 1microAmp at 18V, so should I just use 1microamp for 5V?

Output current is the max current you can draw from the chip before it will give up the magic smoke.
Input current is the max current the chip will draw (because of it's internal resistance)
Basically, you should only be driving high impedance (aka low current) loads with the output, like other logic chips or a switching transistor which will then drive your load. And if you are driving logic chips, you can only connect one output to 7/0.1 = 70 inputs.

I spent hours making a mold out of wood to cast a planter in a specific shape, did a really nice job, superglued all the edges so it wouldn't fall apart. Suddenly got impatient when it came time to mix the cement and didn't bother getting the sand. It cracked when I got it out of the mold. Would it be worth putting the mold back together or should I stick to what I'm good at and make one out of metal?

It’s supposed to have a wrench like pic related.

I was asking about this recently and people were saying that you don’t really want to use them to cut brand new threads unless it’s a really expensive and strong set and you will wear them out. Most of them are best used for cleaning up damaged threads. And also that they’re a wear item. So be careful messing around with them too much and ruining the dies before you need them for a real job.

At least that’s what I understand from the compiled advice.

Bought a ~1991 27' bumper pull travel trailer a year or so ago, and finally got around to gutting it.
Are there any common snags with a complete trailer refurb? The outer shell is split on the edges, and I know nothing about redoing the roof.
So far I'm about 30% done with gutting the inside.
So, any pitfalls to watch out for? Anyone with experience doing this?

Currently have a desk similar to this (glass top). I'd like to clamp dual monitor arms onto it but have read that they need a strong desk and wood blocks to help spread the pressure.

Would making a wooden table top (using pallets or something similar) to go under the glass one accomplish this and make things safe? Or would the pallets be too flimsy / the glass still be under pressure.

Thanks.

>> No.1385639

Whatever you do, don’t attempt to drill through the glass to mount it.

Pallets are knotty and crude so make sure you find good pieces if you do it. Might be worth getting some 2x4s instead so you can really sink screws into it and then strain them if you want them to look nice,

Yes, I was planning on just laying the glass on top of the wood and then clamping the arms on. Maybe using some rubber spots or something in the corners between the glass and wood to keep it in place.

Would using pallets as the main bit going horizontal and then a few 2x4's as the support vertically underneath be better seeing as you mentioned sinking screws in?

Either way, thanks for the response. It's nice to have confirmation on something before charging ahead.

>> No.1385816

I wouldn't feel safe clamping to glass. Consider that leverage is a thing. If you're willing to create a new top for it to set the glass on, why not just take the extra step and finish the surface, then use that new top instead of the glass one?

Is there a mechanical tool or principle that would allow me to move an object back and forth along a track or guide wire without electrical input? Something like this is what I want to achieve without the motor obviously.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEmNd2-nqkU

I am looking to move a small payload back and forth roughly 4' 24h a day without the use of a motor. The 12# object could be attached to any sort of track or cable that would allow it to move back and forth along it. It wouldnt need to remain level.

I am not familiar with a principle that would allow me to do this and am having a hard time imagining a way of doing this so I figured I'd turn to you diynosaurs for some ideas. Thanks.

My dude is the manager of a Pep Boys service department after only working there like a year and gets some good money between the salary and bonuses. Dude doesn’t even have all of his mechanic certifications. He started as a service writer and within a couple months he got a manager gig and wasn’t autistic and got the whole department at a better store right after and will probably have a whole store within the next year.
