Let's talk shop organization. What cool storage stuff have you guys found or made to make better use of your space, or make things more usable? I seem to be in a constant battle of better organizing my tools, and then filling more space than I have with new tools.

Bisley A4 filing cabinets. Never paid more than £20 for second hand 10-drawer cabinets. The word vintage often now added to the titles has inflated the price to the £40 mark but it's paying over the odds. For out on site I use Festool Systainer drawers, Makpac cases and a couple of Makita roll along bags.

>Inb4 buy fag
These are expensive but I've not found a better off the shelf system, on site my time is more valuable than the cost of my tool transport set up and I need to be able to grab whatever box I need in the morning depending on where I'm working/what I'm doing, knowing it's organised and I can quickly find what I need to make my day as profitable as possible.

Most of my stuff rolls around in the bottom of an old steel toolbox. Far as arranging screwdrivers I use a piece of 1"x2"trim board drilled for the drivers and screwed into the wall by my workbench. Just drop em in the hole and they stay.
For the sockets, I use those holders on a handle thingies. Like pic related, but a bit more sturdy.

for most things i have cut foam so that if a tool isnt present at the end of the day i can make that visual distinction quickly, as for most small parts, tools, bits i use a tray for sockets that snap on/off, and a small set of clear tackle box pods for most bits, and small consumables. however im concidering mounting a short rack in my tool box to stand my pliers up on their sides, and ive also concidered using an organized tray for my wrenched to better utilize space in my box.

foaming is nice if you dont have a lot of tools, but some companies require foaming of tool boxes as a "precaution" as well as tool box inventories, but by the time anyone other than the box owner noticed a tool was missing it would be too late, seems like a cya thing more than an organizational thing.

>> No.1370287

>>1370277
That works if you need to bring them with you, but you either have a whole bundle of wrenches hanging off whatever you're doing, or you need to remove enough wrenches or rotate the wire through to get to the one you want. You'd be better off with just a roll-up case, but even that isn't as quick as just having them all laid out if you're working somewhere you have the room to do that in.

I outgrew the little folding DeWalt box I was using for bits and decided to try this. I have mixed feelings. I'm not great at telling the size at a glance, so this lets me quickly try different bits on the screw to find the best fit, way faster than digging around in a box to find the correct size, but then it's a pain in the ass to get the bit off the board, and it takes up a lot of room. I have a piece that's the same length, but less wide, and I think that'll eventually prove useful for just odds and ends type stuff.

Good advice.

When I bought these sockets they were in one of those big plastic suitcase/briefcase looking things. If I wanted the 3/8 socket there were three or four scattered in different locations. If I had an odd bolt it was a pain finding metric or not.

So I made this setup which is about 10x smaller space. All the 3/8 are together. Everything is sorted by size so it's easy to find the best socket for that weird bolt without having to go through the metrics and then the others.

It's not very portable, meaning if it turns over in a vehicle I would have to an hero, but in my workshop it's great.

>> No.1372506

>>1372056
I first looked at this and was going to talk shit, but left it alone because whatever, you do what works for you guy, but I just noticed that you have the SAE and metric all mixed together, and still in order based on size. That's pretty neat, I could see how that would come in handy. I still think I prefer the normal way of sorting it, because then once you've settled in on metric vs SAE, you only search through that one set for the rest of your sizes, but realistically, for the home guy, you're probably only dealing with one or two sizes anyways, and this is a great way to deal with that.

But good god man, do you not own a square?

Honestly, they're not that great. They work well, but the cap is a huge waste of plastic. They were one of the first things I made, and I didn't know what kind of tolerances I get out of this printer.

If I had to do them again, they'd just be hexagons with a normal twist cap.

You should try something like this (commonly used to ship endmills and taps in), the bumps hold the inner and outer sleeve together and they work with various lengths. Quick to open, don't need to be precise, and should wear better over time compared to threads.

That's sort of what I was going for. Those small bumps actually do require fairly tight tolerances to work properly, as do most small snap-action retaining features.

The other issue that I didn't notice at first is that the drills are much longer than the taps. The adjustability of the containers doesn't help at that point, because then the tap is free to rub against the drill(s) if the cap isn't all the way down.

Either way, I went through the hassle of designing some fully-parametric, 3D-printable bottles and threaded caps for small parts storage (specifically SMD stuff). Some small modifications to those would make better and far more material-efficient tap/drill storage if I ever need to make more.

Prior to the cabinet, it was all just sitting on top of one of those Gorilla/Muscle racks. I'll take the wood. I plan to put some kinda coating on to help seal it up a bit, but if it ever comes to the point where metal vs wood matters, I've already got bigger issues.

Just remember to oil then well, plastic can not wick away moisture.

There is a reason machinist traditionally used wood for their chests instead of the metals which were the materials of their trade.

Really? I would think that while wood would wick large amounts of moisture away, it would also ensure that there was always a small amount of moisture in contact with the thing, and that you'd be better off just drying things that were wet before storage.

>> No.1378978

>>1378932
Regardless of what you store in, you need to keep tools dry and oiled if you want them rust free,

The problem with metal/plastic containers is that moisture in the air can condense and has a tendency to collect and get trapped between tool and case. With wood this is not an issue, the moisture in the air that condenses is sucked up by the wood.

In the modern world of climate control, this is less of an issue, and is not much of an issue either way if you keep things clean and oiled, wood adds an extra layer of protection, but if you lack a climate controlled shop and enjoy wide swing in temp and humidity, wood makes life abit easier and less oily.

I mean they might work in the best case scenario- a stripped phillips head on a wood screw. And typically you can just lean into the drill kinda hard and it will grip it enough to get them out. If the screw is fucked beyond that, I’m not sure how useful the extractors would be.

Forcing your identity is demonstrating that you are more interested in e-fame and being known than contributing solid knowledge to the board just because you wish to contribute, nothing more.

You are on an anonymous image board. Sure, it might fly on other boards, but look at the circlejerking that happens in generals on /g/, /o/, /vg/ and /k/. I don't lurk /out/ but I'm certain the same thing. Fucked if we want that here. Every single trip that has appeared here has been rapidly and angrily ran the fuck off, because we are just not interested in egotistical fucks who insist on putting themselves above the rest of us. We have USAF machinists, CERN engineers, professionals from all walks of life posting here, and all of them can do it without the need to make a name for themselves. By this logic, an organism that reacts to a negative external force is at fault for reacting, not the external force. Classic tripcunt logic.

Which ones did you git?

>not 99¢

I’m sure they’re nice. That company is fuckin strange too, they make aftermarket parts for VWs and socket holders.

I gotta say, for the price, I'm a little let down. They're perfectly functional, and they fit my drawers just about perfectly, so I have no complaints there, it's just that the finish could be a bit better. There are a few places where the fly cutter hit that don't look uniform, and they've only broken the edge on the bottom along the straight edges, not along the radiused edges. There are a few minor spots where the anodizing is already dinged, especially along the edges(45 degree angle, not a round edge), and I spent maybe 3 minutes scraping little aluminum slivers off the base of the pegs on the 1/4" tray.

It is what it is, and what it is is the nicest looking, most durable socket storage I've found, I just expected a bit better finish for a triple digit price on an empty storage solution.

Sucks about the finish.

So what, you have it set for shallow and deep of each size? Or 6pt and 12pt of each? Oh and how tall are the pegs, like 1/2”? Do the sockets fit real snug?

And related to what I posted earlier, how the hell did you settle on that company and not something more widely known?

You're lucky I post while I poop, I haven't synced my filters to my tablet in a while. I don't have an impact, so for now it's standard/deep 6-pt when available, 12-pt when I'm impatient and grab it locally. They measure spot on at 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" according to my Harbor Freight caliper, so loose enough nothing is press fit, but not overly wiggly. Pins are 9/10/14mm tall, so tall enough that you can't knock sockets over, even if you barely lift them first. Reddit has a huge boner for them, so that's how I noticed them, but after looking around, I didn't find a solution I liked better. A similar style and layout but with a twist-lock probably would have been my first choice, but after trying these, I'm glad this is what I got. Everything stays on well enough I can still move it around with me, although obviously it's not a rail that you can toss in a bag. Fuck rails for a tool chest, they're a pain to remove and reinsert.

Hanging on to this for a few weeks because I love little containers, waiting to see if I find anything they'd be good for. Probably going to use a couple for set screws or something and toss the rest here in a couple more weeks.

Unironically have a box just like this of my own mini tic tac boxes.
I though i was crazy. I thought of using them as colour filters for LEDs or something but they are quite an awkward size.

eyeballing the size, I suppose they might be good for holding bulk SMT components, if you don't already have cut tape storage sorted

Yea, I work at a grocery store and have a really nice rolling tray that was used for Little Debbie's several years ago. We found it upstairs and it was going in the dumpster.

I think there are better ways to spend $120 on some VSD's, but it's one of those cases where it's one of the top brands, if you want that one, you just suck it up and pay the premium. Personally I'd say to check Amazon.de(or watch regular Amazon for pricing errors) for some Wera, and only buy the sizes you need. I'm slowly filling out my Wera sets at $4-5 a driver, I just throw an extra in to any Amazon order I make.
