A solid state amp will preform better and cost less. Not to mention the dangers associated with constructing a tube amp if you're inexperienced.

This.
You only want a tube amp because it's got glass tubes with lights inside.
My suggestion is you find a few glass tubes and put leds in them and put them on the amp.

As a bonus you'll be able to induce artery busting hypertension in audiophiles by showing it off.

Dangers?! Nobody said there would be dangers! Holy fuck, OP run for your life!

The idea tickles my inner hipster too, op. there are many legitimate reasons we've move past tube transistors though.

To add to this, I recommend this headphone amp if you want to diy it. It will drive anything sans electrostatics and the K1000s (either of which I doubt you own).

You might want to wait though, as he's coming out with a desktop version soon.

OP here. I am not >>134476. I am actually interested in building a guitar amplifier, where tubes do make a big difference in the sound. I'm not asking for specific pieces of advice, since I'm already pretty good with electronics and engineering; I'm just wondering about peoples' general experiences, especially with tweaking and customizing the sound or common missteps or problems to look out for.

If you were "good with electronics and engineering" as you say, you wouldn't need to ask so many questions about this, you'd be answering other people's questions instead.

Did I ask a question? Did anybody else ask a question that I could answer?
