I've been painting for 1-2 months now, first with stencils (A2 and A3), then i went painting graffiti, but it's not as much fun as seeing how people look at stencils, and it doesn't really have any "meaning" in it. So i'm moving back to stencils, but i want to make more amusing paintings. Is it worth to buy a cutting board (i don't know the word for it, image related)? will the blades stay sharp for a longer time, than cutting on a desk, or any wooden board? it's not that cheap, but if it worths it, then i'll buy one A3 sized.

All of these have islands or are completely unusable because there's so many islands, unless they are multi-part stencils, but multi-part stencils are shown as having more than one color (like, >>137702 ) so you know which parts are on a different stencil cut out.

What's so hard about islands? If you're painting onto a canvas or a garment, you can use Con-Tact paper, and the islands will stick just fine, yet are easily removed. On a T-shirt, you can even use freezer paper--the shiny side will stick if you iron it on, and you can remove it with no problem.

It's simply not considered stencilling, as in the art form, if there are islands (unless it's a multi-layer stencil). While there are functional means of getting high contrast images onto surfaces with islands, like silk-screening, this generally speaking is considered more of a functionalist approach, and detracts from one of the things that makes stencils beautiful -- natural, unobtrusive bridging. This is in addition to things like implied line, and negative space. For example, one of the reasons Banksy is so poplar (as much as I dislike the nuances of his ethos and decisions) is that when he tries to portray some bit of information, much of it is left for the observer to infer; everything from the missing chunks in the stencil to the meaning of the work. I just picked the first banksy pic I got from wikipedia, and notice how the forehead of the subject isn't defined, yet is obviously there? Similarly, what the entire piece is supposed to mean or portray isn't explained, yet we can figure it out from context (though in this case, this is one of his more contested works, as to what the meaning specifically is). So when making these things, remember that the point of these isn't to make anatomically correct diagrams of the photos or drawings they're based off of, but to relay some image or emotion to the audience.

I like doing 2 tone stencils.

I use folders/paper dividers so that my base image can be laid, then when I fold over the other half it's perfectly lined up to do the highlights/shadows.

The oaktag ones are good, but the plastic ones are best.

For just scrap herp derp stencils I used to dumpster dive endrolls of laminate from a stick mfg plant in my home town.
