I'm redecorating my room and would really like to build some furniture. I have no previous experience and have no idea where to begin, so could /diy/ give me some advice to help me get started?

I want to make a tv console like in the pic first, since it's basically just a box I figure it's an easy first project.

>> No.13490

I've been thinking of building furniture too, but will I need power tools? If I do then it might be cheaper for me to just buy premade furniture than drop lots of money on tools.

>> No.13496

You can rent tools. Or borrow them from an uncle, parent, family, neighbour, etc.

In a same boat here. I made an elaborate diagram for every piece I want in my room, but I'm seriously doubting my woodworking skills.

Google Sketchup http://sketchup.google(dot)com/ is nice free software for sketching up any wood working projects you may have, look on Youtube for tutorials on it.

It's amazing what you can make with a pullsaw, power drill, and a palm sander. I gave this all a worn metal faux finish afterwards. The holes are made with one of those cheap stamped metal hole cutting sets like you use for installing locksets in doors.

Pull saws are really nice, they let you cut pine more cleanly and with less effort. I've acquired a lot more tools in the meantime, but it's amazing what you can do with just a few.

All I want is to find the perfect chair and mod it into this.

A box should be pretty trivial, yeah. If you want to make it exactly like that, it won't be. But you could just make a 2x4 frame, nail on some plywood sides, and paint the thing. That would be easy as fuck, only downsides are there'd be a lip, and some of the texture will remain. Which might not be downsides if you want that, but those are the main ways it'd differ from the pic.

>>13501
Post some of your designs and I'll critique them with ease of creation in mind.

>> No.13994

In all honesty I probably will make it; not because it is hard (it wouldn't be) but because I'm lazy and don't have the desire to learn how to make furniture.

I could probably approximate the effect by taking a chair with an already rounded back and ask a hardware store like Mac's to affix sheet metal to the outside.

>>13994
That should read will NOT make it.

That's it. I'm going to get some fucking sleep.

OP here, It's one of those things I've heard of but for some reason never really checked it out, looks perfect.

>>13751
Wow, very nice. So is it feasible to use a pull saw instead of a circular? I know it would be easier to use power tools, but for some reason I prefer not to use them if possible.

>>13814
Yea just a box, I'm not thinking exactly like the pic.

Thanks for the suggestions gentlemen, I'll have mess around with sketchup tomorrow. I should probably call it a night and go to sleep before sunrise for a change...

This isn't about choosing the easiest, laziest option.
It's about making things yourself, with your own skills and handiwork. It's not a lifehack thread, making life easier for you with shortcuts and the cheapest possible choices you can make. This thread, and indeed all of /diy/ is not about making life less of a struggle or a hardship, or cruising through life with the littlest effort possible.
It's providing quality of life.

Google "Kreg Joint" or "Kreg Jig".
Buy Jig.
Call some place like Lowe's or Menard's and give them the dimensions and quantity of the lumber you need. No need for saw, they'll cut what you need for you.
Buy a decent drill and use jig to make shit.

If you doubt, watch the video you'll find after Googling the Kreg Jig. It takes all of the pain in the ass stuff like gluing, dovetailing, or any other joint type like biscuits or dowels/pegs and replaces it with a jig that reduces projects that would normally take up to a week, to a project that can be done to completion in less than a day.
