Anyone have success with homebrewing a small 160 Meter antenna?

Plans?
Pics?

My antenna tuner and G5RV just say "fuck you!" when I try to tune to 160 (I know a G5RV is not intended to work 160, I try anyways).

Small city lot that barely fits my G5RV, need a small option for 160. I do have a 9:1 Unun laying around that's doing nothing currently.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand citizen emergency communications. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical electronics most of the jokes will go over a typical reader's head. There's also ARES' nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into its characterisation - its personal philosophy draws heavily from Cold War literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike whackers truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in whackers' existencial catchphrase "Everyone stand clear" which itself is a cryptic reference to their childhood dreams of police duty. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as the whacker's genius unfolds itself from the light bar. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have an ARRL tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

ARRL.org is a good start even if you're not American.

If American, you need to take a $15 exam for technician class license. This will get you on the local repeater stations and allow you to talk for about 50 miles.

If you pass technician, you can take the general class license for free right after.

General gives you privileges on all the amateur bands and the maximum power limits (usually 1500 Watts).

Extra is very hard but gives you all the privileges. Study for tech and general.

Fun includes building your own antennas, experimenting (talk to someone by bouncing the signal off the Moon! EME Bounce), and talking to people around the world.

TS-590SG, Ameritron 800 (poorfag), RSP2 for a Panadapter with an Avantone Mix Cube monitor (all Hams should get this as their monitor... It's incredible) as my main hooked to a G5RV antenna 40 feet into a tree (small city lot) as my main.

Next, become a Volunteer Examiner. Help out at the Exams of your radio clubs and swap meets. Most of the VEs are old men and would be very happy with the help.

My next purchase is going to be a good antenna tuner. The 590's internal tuner is magnificent, but just can't get the SWR down to safe on 80 and 60 because my G5RV radials are too close to the roof of my house.

After that, I'm building a magnetic loop for 160 Meters.

Our you sure those ladder lines are intended for direct feed? Most I see are intended to run perpendicular to the radials for so many feet, connect to a 1:1 Current choke Balun and then a certain length of coax to balance the system before it gets to the radio.

The True Tune G5RV on Ebay is cut to very specific measurements to accomplish all that (and the quality of the build is better than anything I could have built at the same price).

I got interested in ham radio when I was in high school in the 80's. Back then you had to know morse code, I could not do it fast enough and was also too poor to afford the equipment.

fast forward to a few years ago I have the money, bought an SDR radio to sniff out what was out there. I find no SSTV, no intersting people to talk to, no decent radio stations.

I messed with radio fax (receiving) and other stuff but it's just a boring wasteland. The worst part are the contests. The only time there is any amount of people on and there all screaming CQ contest. boring as hell.

I've never sent an OO card, though, even though I'm an OO/AA. The shit is contained to the /b/ frequencies on 40, 20, and 80.

The only thing I do is pseudo-Doppler triangulate lids and since I know a Ham/cop in every city in the area, they're happy to knock on a lid's door.

Pointless since the FCC won't do there jobs.

the thing about all this is; people are trying to play up ham radio, but those of us who have listened to it over the years have found that it's boring, plain and simple. the last time I thought it was interesting was the 80's.

you can play it up all you want, you can call it trolling, you can say "people are stupid", or they "don't understand it so they make fun of it".

The truth is that (in my case) I was very interested in it years ago, but it just is not the same. there is nothing going on. talking over a radio to someone in another country has no mystery when you can do the same thing with your phone, or a message board, or facebook.

face it, the hobby is dying a slow painful diabetic death.

just tuning around a couple band quickly and i can see 60-100 convos going on, plus lots of digital coms. so i dont know what your talking about nothing going on, maybe you dont know how to put up a decent antenna. the point of using your own rig is that were not using a cell tower, or internet to make contacts. im running my setup off of several batteries and a solar charger, off grid. not relying on any infrastructure.
more and more people are getting there tickets, so i dont know why you would think its dying.

why am I checking this thread? because I'm trying to find out if there is anything still worth getting in to the hobby more (getting a license).

so far there isn't

I refurbish old radios and ham gear, I do batteries and solar as a hobby, and even small engines.

if I'm going to spend money on something I want some kind of return. talking to someone on the radio is not worth spending even the money for cheap chinesium radios.

I'm going out to mess around in my work shed for a while so I won't see any replies.

You ever just sit at a bar and strike up a conversation with a stranger about the weather or the hockey game on the TV? No? Of course not, because you are to busy jacking to anime. Ham is just a way to meet people before the Internet existed. Of course you are going to talk about your set-up because it is 1: how you are talking, 2: how you made contact with the other person. So you talk about what you have in common with a stranger and that is radio. You start with a common interest and develop a friendship from there. You learn technology (a technology you cannot grasp because you just google 'anime porn' and don't care how you get it) and build on that.

But I digress. I'm a 'faggot' for learning how to use and manipulate the airwaves that actually created 99% of modern life in its infancy. None of this would be possible without radio waves. Look at your router. It is a wireless device that exists because of radio waves.

Is Ham archaic? Sure. Do I have to weed through 1,000 frequencies to find an actual conversation? You betcha! Is that any different than 4chan? Not really.

So what is different? I learn shit, you don't. You go microwave tendies when the internet goes down if you have power. I solve my problem and continue talking. You maybe, at best, jack off to an anime gif you saved and finish your tendies with ketchup before your Mac battery dies and I check on my neighbors and make sure they're okay while being able to receive and relay warnings and reports of the situation where I live.

You Code Fags don't even realize your roots. You IT cunts were born from Hams.

Directly plugged in. That it was so regular made me think it wasn't something like a PSU, whose timing wouldn't be based on negative feedback, and the data in between means it must have something to do with radio, possibly a high-amplitude/close-proximity pager that likes non-sinusoidal signals. I could even hear it slightly when listening to an FM station.

It was all white noise when listening to it SSB so I don't think it's a remodulated AM signal.

If I had a better SDR I'd seek for it's first harmonic if there is one, but since it's less than 25MHz it may be SW from further afield. My computer is indoors, plugged into it's adapter (but I unplugged it and the noise remained) with an open window. I have a Uniden 436HP scanner That I built an off center dipole antenna from 3/4" copper tubing. I'm on a hill / very large farm in the sticks and the antenna is roughly 30' off the ground. I receive some police departments / fire etc... as far away as 260 miles. Short of a signal amp is there a better option? I realize that you need to tune the antenna to a specific wavelength to get more range or maybe a yagi. I'm trying to cover the entire spectrum. I realize it's a give and take. Should I be more appreciative of my results?

Well I'm not seeing any more of that noise, but I am getting a bunch of these distinctly irritating lines while listening to FM, with both antennae. Is this common? They're all the way from below 25MHz to about 120MHz where they begin to die off. The lines cause a lot of very audible noise that interferes with lower amplitude stations.

Best options are a wire discone as high as possible (discones are fucking excellent passive receiver antennas), a well grounded PA0RDT-style active (powered) mini whip that is great across many bands or longwire/randomwire.

You really don't need to tune an antenna for receiving only, that's a transmit thing until you're into microwave frequencies. But, longer is better.

Question from someone who knows little about HF but is rather interested in the idea of talking really long distances by bouncing radio waves off the ionosphere. Is the experience of just listening vs actually talking on HF similar to lurking vs actually posting on 4chan (or any other website)?

Somewhat different in that posting on here does not happen in the same time space one would need to respond speaking on radio. That said I have heard mixed responses to those who have trouble talking on the radio.

There is one guy I hear who speech sounds like a literal retard but what he actually says is intelligent. I think he had some brain injury. They treat him much the same as anyone on there. There is another guy who is a bit of a retard but speaks normally. Some of them seem to get a bit pissed off with him and his know all attitude when he actually doesn't know and has a low iq. There are some of them that try and accommodate him because they know he can't help it and is doing his best. The old dudes love him because he will get on roofs and install antennas for them etc and some of them pay him to do gardening and stuff for them.

Lets face it this is 4chan an not everyone here has a way with words irl. Take a good look in the mirror and consider your options. There are digital modes and some my find these easier than speaking. In my country there are no digital modes for the most basic license level though.

I already tried it with no power plugged in and that made no difference, and I doubt the twisted pair is giving me any grief, but I'll remove it or try it swapped with some Cat6 and see what makes a difference. I don't have any coax lying about so I probably can't get my antenna any further away, and I don't want to solder any more coax together with alfoil as shielding again; that's what I did to get my car antenna to plug into my SDR. Naturally I also soldered the shielding wires together, but the shielding on the car antenna lead was pretty sparse to begin with.

How so? Too much information crammed in too close? Showing just the subdivisions of the amateur bands (and perhaps some military and police bands) might be a good way around that.

You mean variations within the US? I know the international spectrum charts all differ quite a lot, but I guess world-band radio frequencies must all be similar.

In parts, yes. We get a lot of details for VLF - HF but at UHF it becomes too detailed and overwhelming.

Even amateur bands are sub divided into use,. some for morse, some for digital modes, some for voice etc.

I've been working on my own low-power broadcast and amateur chart where frequency is on the x axis and maximum allowable radiated dBW on the y-axis, which is a neat thing to have for bands that have a maximum power output. Here blue is amateur, pale green is specialised audio sending (hearing aids and microphones), and green is for audio senders. The green bands require no licence in New Zealand.

>> No.1333125

Yes that's what I meant, to only show larger versions of the amateur bands, so you can show their detailed subdivisions without having to worry about the detail in the bands that nobody cares about.

>(region 1, region 2 etc.)
Looks like blu-ray video regions. I guess the best way to deal with all those differences would be to convert each countries' charts into data and have some GUI for browsing through it or displaying multiple countries in parallel. Since different countries use different terminology it would be quite a task, even if you could use some picture-to-data program. Ideally you'd download a .txt file from the country's database since not every frequency boundary is labelled, but I doubt those exist.

The pdf charts also show multiple uses for the same frequency in a less than ideal way; stacking them, making the charts look pretty cramped. figuring out a better way of displaying this may be a step in the right direction.

Post pics and info on where the hell did you take the cores from.

Generally there are two major class of toroids: iron-powder and alike and ferrites.

First class is low-perm, with distributed air-gap, high B-sat, used to store energy, sometimes as an EMI choke (thanks to losses).

Second class is high-perm, low Bsat cores, designed to provide good magnetic coupling between winding. Used either as transformers (think of a car audio amplifier), also used as EMI filters.

Depending on power level, frequency band and desired balun Z transformation ratio you can surely wind on one or another toroid pulled from scrap.
