My antenna tuner and G5RV just say "fuck you!" when I try to tune to 160 (I know a G5RV is not intended to work 160, I try anyways).

Small city lot that barely fits my G5RV, need a small option for 160. I do have a 9:1 Unun laying around that's doing nothing currently.

I'm an idiot, it's Lumpkin, Georgia. They have a 40 meter dipole. They don't pick up Dave well because he's in between Ground and Skywave.

Picks up AC1DD when he comes on perfectly. I can't hear him on my home rig because he's in Illinois and I'm in 8.

It would be impossible to explain all the technical aspects involved. I would suggest contacting a local radio club, do a lot of reading and work hard. Realize that you will have an unappreciated ability. It truly is a thankless job. Yet in the event of an emergency we will be the eyes and ears of the community if not the whole country. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand citizen emergency communications. there are tons of books. most of the knowledge can be found for free online or from your local club. the easiest/cheapest way to start would be to get a baofeng UV-5R ($30) and use radioreference.com and find your local frequencies. youll most likely have a club around you that you can join, and they will help you out and help you get on the air.

ARRL.org is a good start even if you're not American.

If American, you need to take a $15 exam for technician class license. This will get you on the local repeater stations and allow you to talk for about 50 miles.

If you pass technician, you can take the general class license for free right after.

General gives you privileges on all the amateur bands and the maximum power limits (usually 1500 Watts).

Extra is very hard but gives you all the privileges. Study for tech and general.

Fun includes building your own antennas, experimenting (talk to someone by bouncing the signal off the Moon! EME Bounce), and talking to people around the world.

TS-590SG, Ameritron 800 (poorfag), RSP2 for a Panadapter with an Avantone Mix Cube monitor (all Hams should get this as their monitor... It's incredible) as my main hooked to a G5RV antenna 40 feet into a tree (small city lot) as my main.

For local, I have a couple dual bander mobiles (Yaesu and a TYT) hooked to two Open J-poles on the roof and over a dozen handi-talkies, including a Pelican case full of Baofengs for EmComm with my OeM and other disasters.

I want to get a smaller Icom HF for my RACES/ARES go kit. The SG is a bit too big

I got that 6 month old, used only to test it, TS-590SG for $200 with a free MC-90 Mic, otherwise I would have bought an IC-7300 myself.

Next, become a Volunteer Examiner. Help out at the Exams of your radio clubs and swap meets. Most of the VEs are old men and would be very happy with the help.

My next purchase is going to be a good antenna tuner. The 590's internal tuner is magnificent, but just can't get the SWR down to safe on 80 and 60 because my G5RV radials are too close to the roof of my house.

After that, I'm building a magnetic loop for 160 Meters.

Our you sure those ladder lines are intended for direct feed? Most I see are intended to run perpendicular to the radials for so many feet, connect to a 1:1 Current choke Balun and then a certain length of coax to balance the system before it gets to the radio.

The True Tune G5RV on Ebay is cut to very specific measurements to accomplish all that (and the quality of the build is better than anything I could have built at the same price).

On top of that. G5RVs need the radials to be at least 10 feet from metal at any given time. I moved the end of one that was 3 feet from aluminum flashing on the house after I couldn't get to a good SWR on 80 meters, to 10 feet on a pvc pole and now I have SWR of 1.5:1 or less on all of 80.

Side note: that pvc pipe that is gray is not good for radio. It has some weird properties that effect radio signals.

How much loss does 75 ohm TV coax experience? I currently have some hooked up to a Baofeng and connected to a rain gutter with an alligator clip at the other end just for receiving. I can hear one repeater better than I can with the whip inside my apartment due to the lack of interference, but I also can't hear other further away repeaters that I could hear with the whip inside my apartment. Squelch is at the same setting I use inside (1).

I'm asking because I'm just looking at listening right now and I had those parts sitting around. Telling me to use proper 50 ohm coax doesn't help when I don't have that sitting around right now, though I could swap for a 1/2 wave piece of wire. My main motivation for using the gutter was to get something higher up for the time being.

I got interested in ham radio when I was in high school in the 80's. Back then you had to know morse code, I could not do it fast enough and was also too poor to afford the equipment.

fast forward to a few years ago I have the money, bought an SDR radio to sniff out what was out there. I find no SSTV, no intersting people to talk to, no decent radio stations.

I messed with radio fax (receiving) and other stuff but it's just a boring wasteland. The worst part are the contests. The only time there is any amount of people on and there all screaming CQ contest. boring as hell.

I slipped and swore on a local repeater when the Boy Scouts were learning radio. Only time I ever got an OO card.

I've never sent an OO card, though, even though I'm an OO/AA. The shit is contained to the /b/ frequencies on 40, 20, and 80.

The only thing I do is pseudo-Doppler triangulate lids and since I know a Ham/cop in every city in the area, they're happy to knock on a lid's door.

I go to ham radio swap meets, but not for ham equipment, they are a good source of electronic components. Prices are not much higher than ebay but I can actually look at them. There are not electronic part places here anymore, except Fry's electronics and a few others.

Most electronics parts stores cater to low voltage computer and radio parts. I need high voltage parts.

If there are no swap meets I have to order my parts and components from ebay, mouser, or someplace like that.

I listen to shortwave on an R-5000. I like to switch to LSB to scan for stations so I can hear the carrier beat freq. Speech can be heard but not understood (sounds like Donald Duck). I'm kept getting these bands of higher amplitude noise on my SDR for a while but they stopped 30 minutes ago. The small gaps between each sound blast are about 1 second apart. I was receiving this noise everywhere from 26MHz (my SDR's minimum) up past the 100MHz stations. That it was so regular made me think it wasn't something like a PSU, whose timing wouldn't be based on negative feedback, and the data in between means it must have something to do with radio, possibly a high-amplitude/close-proximity pager that likes non-sinusoidal signals. It was all white noise when listening to it SSB so I don't think it's a remodulated AM signal.

I have a Uniden 436HP scanner That I built an off center dipole antenna from 3/4" copper tubing. I'm on a hill / very large farm in the sticks and the antenna is roughly 30' off the ground. I receive some police departments / fire etc... as far away as 260 miles. Short of a signal amp is there a better option? I realize that you need to tune the antenna to a specific wavelength to get more range or maybe a yagi. I'm trying to cover the entire spectrum. I realize it's a give and take. No ferrites, but since it's a laptop I can just try unplugging everything. I already tried it with no power plugged in and that made no difference, and I doubt the twisted pair is giving me any grief, but I'll remove it or try it swapped with some Cat6 and see what makes a difference. I don't have any coax lying about so I probably can't get my antenna any further away, and I don't want to solder any more coax together with alfoil as shielding again; that's what I did to get my car antenna to plug into my SDR. I've been working on my own low-power broadcast and amateur chart where frequency is on the x axis and maximum allowable radiated dBW on the y-axis, which is a neat thing to have for bands that have a maximum power output. Here blue is amateur, pale green is specialised audio sending (hearing aids and microphones), and green is for audio senders. The green bands require no licence in New Zealand.

Yes that's what I meant, to only show larger versions of the amateur bands, so you can show their detailed subdivisions without having to worry about the detail in the bands that nobody cares about.

Looks like blu-ray video regions. I guess the best way to deal with all those differences would be to convert each countries' charts into data and have some GUI for browsing through it or displaying multiple countries in parallel. Since different countries use different terminology it would be quite a task, even if you could use some picture-to-data program. Ideally you'd download a .txt file from the country's database since not every frequency boundary is labelled, but I doubt those exist.

The pdf charts also show multiple uses for the same frequency in a less than ideal way; stacking them, making the charts look pretty cramped. figuring out a better way of displaying this may be a step in the right direction.

huh, didn't think to look there, indeed there are some berry gud deals there on non-shite binocular cores. but their toroid selection is weak and expensive, also Mouser's shipping charges make my bunghole sore
digikey seems to win on transformer-worthy cores, at least when the chinks are excluded from consideration, and not considering shipping

Yes, a drill-down function had been a handy way of seeing details as needed, optionally with filtering.

presumably, the aim of this map/chart would be to quickly and visually answer the question of whether $license_class in $country authorizes transmission using $mode on $frequency. that would be challenge enough to answer just for 60m. then there are national complications such as primacy and sub-national restrictions such as Line A and the National Radio Quiet Zone. you'd need to pack applicable caveats on the back of the sheet in 10-point condensed type

Generally there are two major class of toroids: iron-powder and alike and ferrites.

First class is low-perm, with distributed air-gap, high B-sat, used to store energy, sometimes as an EMI choke (thanks to losses).

Second class is high-perm, low Bsat cores, designed to provide good magnetic coupling between winding. Used either as transformers (think of a car audio amplifier), also used as EMI filters.

Depending on power level, frequency band and desired balun Z transformation ratio you can surely wind on one or another toroid pulled from scrap.
