Anyone here made a "Proenekke-style" cabin aka simple log cabin?
I'm planning on giving it a go this spring and would love to hear your stories and thoughts about it.

Personally, I'd make one with a much sharper pitch roof. Of course, I'd be using modern roofing and insulation for it, unlike what he's using so there's nothing to slide off. I'd make a loft up there for sleeping.

It’s a pipe dream of mine to build one of these, but it’s a huge undertaking and it will probably never happen. But have a bump on me senpai. Maybe someone will come along to regale us with tales.

I would love to make a little cabin out in an enclosed canyon on my property, but I'm not sure on how my county regulates that

I was just watching this the other day.
Was way less involved than a full on cabin build but it has some neat ideas.

Good luck on your build and post a thread or 12 when you get it going.

Funny, i've been following that lad and his dad too.

And i definitely will!
I've got the green light from my old man who owns the property and got most of the tools sorted. Thank fuck that my father offered me to use his chainsaw, otherwise i'd be stuck with a hand saw with the budget i currently have.

What seems to be absolutely impossible to find is a drawknife that isnt shit for under 100$, currently scouting auction sites for old ones to sharpen up instead

It'll be mostly simple but very hard work

Are you British?
What are you going to use the draw knife for?
Just debarking? Or to try and somewhat hew the logs?
I would think any run of the mill draw knife could easily debark as long as you keep it sharp.
Have you watched Proenekke's full videos? He's always filing on his tools.

Swedish

Debarking and maybe some rough shaping of logs (eg flattening for tight fitted wall)
I know, but there are no places that sell drawknives except for the 100$+ type!
I found some china-made ones on amazon but reading the comments imply that they are very thin and weak; not ideal for rough work like debarking.

The closest thing that doesnt cost a fortune is pic related, the Mora Späntkniv, but its' blade is about 10 cm (3.9 inches), not at all ideal for debarking big logs.

I've watched them all, multiple times.

Ok, so you have a plan. I'm not sure how popular Etsy is in Sweden, but you might be able to find an older one there.
>Or a new one for relatively cheap
Something like this, perhaps. 11" (280mm) blade It's about $60 shipped to the US but it might be less to you.

I'm not very versed in draw knives though, so just peruse around there. You might find something to your liking and budget. And re-search often as, like Ebay, new "old" stuff is listed all the time.

Oh, man, that one seems pretty great for the money. 43$ with shipping. Thank you!
I had never even heard of Etsy before, i'll definitely have a look around.

Really? I've been to Järnia, Granngården, Byggmax, JemoFix, Beijer and Skogma, none of them had any drawknife except for pic related, the Gränsfors Drawknife for 211$

Oh shit, you're going to have a field day.
Etsy is like a flea market online, but less cluttered with random shit like Ebay, and more antiques and harder to find items.
And you're welcome, glad I could be helpful.

Are you me? Pretty much the same situation though I'm planning on starting when I have time off work so some time this summer. The only log cabin building related experience I have is reassembling this old woodshed. Some of the logs were in a pretty bad shape so I made new ones with a chansaw.
The logs my father has are already debarked so that step is taken care of at least
Good luck on your project and I hope I can pick up some tips from you

Not sure if its true, but in a /diy/ bunker thread awhile ago someone said they occasionally check satalite / thermal imagery for unathorized construction.

Slojdfokus dot se has one for 40€. Still, what you want is a real bark spud (barkspade), the kind that you pull towards you is the best. I bet half of the farmers or anyone living in a rural area has one collecting dust in an outhouse and would let you borrow it. I think my father has two. Or just make one with a bit of 3mm sheet steel. Between the bark spud and the chainsaw you probably won't need much else to finish the logs.

Oh shit! How could i have missed that one on Slöjdfokus? Thanks!

I dont know man, drawknifes seem easier than bark spuds and drawknifes can be used for other stuff too, like making furniture for said cabin
