my first styrofoam sculpture for a props class. I made a dinosaur head.

>> No.121416

not bad, i would alter the texture somehow, to give the illusion of scales and whatnot

>> No.121417

yeah at first when I did it it looked like scales due to the natural styrofoam texture but I decided to cover it in plaster to smooth it out, but I agree I should have stuck with a scaly texture. I was very afraid of working with styrofoam at first but I'm excited to do something else now.

that's adorable OP! When you're done with it I'd say you should stick it to the front of your car for shits and giggles.

My goal is to actually find a way to mount it to a piece of wood and put it over my fireplace like a hunting trophy =)

I'm... ok with this.

I dont want to rag on it, cause you said it was your first sculpture, but to me it looks way too simplistic and cartoony, especially the eye and mouth. Anatomical reference and proper painting techniques will work wonders for this kind of thing. But I'm sure you'll get to that with time.

>> No.121467

Is that styrofoam? It looks like it could be like couch foam with rubber or something on top. That's like advanced already in the business props lol, I'm just in a props 101 class

OP, I'd say it's a decent first draft. But with the smooth skin and simplistic design, it looks like a cake decorated with marzapan.

I've thought about making something similar and attatch it to the front of my truck, with a tail attatched to the hitch. At first I was going to carve out of wood, but would rather make something breakable to avoid minor scratches to other cars.

A dream of mine is to make a full size Tyrannid head and mount it such that it extends over a grand piano. But that would take a lot of space, money, and a bit of structual engineering.

Tyrannid, you say?

Space you will need. But in terms of money and engineering I think it can be done realtively cheaply and using lightweight materials. The main mass could easily be carved from EPS for example.

By "Tyrannid" I meant Tyrannosauridae, the Tyrannosaurus family. The skull is about 4 feet tall and 6 feet long (I think).

EPS -- foam? I've never used it as a sculpting medium before. I don't know if it would be needed with foam, but I would want some time skeletal structure.

I haven't looked at cost of material or done serious research, it would be years in the future. For the teeth, I might try to get molds of actual teeth. And I'd use foam rubber for the skin, as they did in Jurassic Park.

EPS is widely used for building up the main bulk of a large-scale sculpture, then the detail is worked over it in clay, rubber, wax, resin or whatever. I worked at a foundry and this was what sculptors of large statues would bring us to make molds from. You can buy huge blocks of white EPS from specialist suppliers or you can use the blue/pink sheets of home insulation laminated together to form a large block. Its very easy to shape using ordinary tools or hot-wire cutters.
