I almost feel like the outdoorsman ambassador due to me having used a tripcode on occasion, so here's some DIY sites for the outdoorsmen here. I also want to say that I see DIY as including learning in general (how to do things, not just build)

http://stevespages.com/page7b.htm - ONLY USE WHEN NEEDED - The man who owns this site is a very generous person, do not take up the bandwidth.

makingmaps.net - DIY Cartography site. Not really instructions so much as free resources; great site nonetheless for anybody making a personal map for hunting, fishing, hiking, etc.

artofmanliness.com/category/manly-skills/ - Not so much a DIY site as much as much as well, the art of manliness. This particular section though is interesting.

ankisrs.net - Great program for memorizing anything really, especially languages.

Not a mod, but I think that asking tips on how to make a helmet for a costume is different from asking for the hole costume. Although some people say that everything costume related should be on /cgl/, I think that /diy/ is mature enough to accept that even if /cgl/, people are still doing it themselves.

The mod has stated before that costume making is relevant to /diy/. You -can- still take it to /cgl/, but you don't have to - and frankly, I think /cgl/ needs a DIY thread about getting that tree trunk out of its collective ass, so I'd suggest you ask here first.

to make this thread more complete, consider a common situation of first time visitors: say I know aboslutely nothing about diy, and I want to get into it; where do I start? what website(s) do I visit first? (asuming a similar level of interest in al diy aspects)

>> No.36257

>>36223
what exactly is /diy/? i mean, how can you be a total noob about diy, there are things that you do on your own, like cooking, cleaning etc. You may say that thats routine work, but some people have never cooked anything.

What would be the answer to that question "Hey guys, i want to /diy/ how do i starg?" fuck, this is very generic, what do you want to do? carpentry? metal working? crafting? knitting? electronics? Thats the reason i decide to classifed each site, General, electronics, computers, etc. That way you can search for what you like.

Your idea is good, maybe we need tiers for the sites, noob tier, pro tier. Sometimes you visit a forum and its too advanced for a noob, or too basic and you want to become a pro.

I would love to do that list with the tiers, but there are too many, and most of them i dont know what are they about, we need people who can classiffy that stuff, for example i dont know shit about electronics and robotics, i dont know which pages are good. but i know a lot about Air conditioning and construction i could review some sites.

Was told by a mod (I think?) to post this here:

"I don't think a separate sticky is necessary for this. I suggest contacting the guy who does the sites.google page in the sticky (https://sites.google.com/site/diyelmo/)) and adding some sort of table (+map?) for that.
Just post the idea in the sticky."

So here goes:

Hello fellow /diy/ers. This thread died yesterday after a good number of replies; wanted to see if it would fare better on the weekend.

I've noticed a lot of threads on this board started by newer diy-ers that have questions regarding either simple repairs or builds (desks, stuff like that.) It seems that some of them are held back by either a lack of tools or experience. Without the proper tools, simple tasks can be arduous and nigh-impossible. (I can remember a couple of times when I thought "my kingdom for a table saw") And if you're short on funds, messing up the only $100 you had to spend on a project can set you back quite a bit.

That being said, I know a number of us here have been at it for a while, and probably have better outfitted workshops and probably a bunch of leftover materials that are waiting for a project. Heck, even work/storage space can be an issue for some. The purpose of this thread is to connect those of us in a position to help another with those that need help. If you're willing to help, post a general location, what tools you have and a way to contact you. If you have a project you need help with, post what you're looking to do and what you need help with. Keep in mind, the idea here isn't charity (so no "lol I need $$$ to maek things.")

(continued)

>> No.38403

Also, I'm sure some of us that have expertise/tools related to one area might lack in another. If you're looking for some work done in one trade, and willing to trade work in another trade, post here too.

Hopefully this thread works out.

Because some people voiced concerns yesterday:
>Post your general city, not your address. This should be obvious but apparently isn't
>Use an anon email, not firstname.lastname@mail.com
>Use common fucking sense; if you don't feel comfortable participating, then don't

-Pictures of ashit load of tools with the name of the tool and general use for them.

-Basic answers to most common asked questions

-A picture on how to stop being a retard and actually building something. Like step 1 find what you want to build, step 2 make YOUR OWN blue prints and dont bug fuck /diy/ over how you should do it, step 3 build it without having /diy/ hold your dick along the way.

Most of building something yourself is not following detailed plans to the T it is knowing what does what and knowing what you need to do to get the result you want.

yes yes yes. i've made 3 of zaph's designs and i like the ZA5.2 vented the best. my favorite resource for speaker designs, detailed explanations and accurate measurements.

along the lines of zaph's objectivist approach to design is nwavguy. he gives the most verbose explanations and measurements i've ever seen but its all good stuff. so far, his posts have focused on headphone audio and explaining the importance of the various amplifier parameters. i'm building his O2 headphone amp over thanksgiving. will let you all know how it goes.

I especially like Bob Smalser's section. He's pretty much that self sufficient woodsman hermit you wanted to be when you were a kid.

As far as forums go, Lumberjocks and Sawmill Creek are my favourites (good for power tool woodworkers as well).
