So I got in an argument with a guy I don't work for anymore.

He hired me to help him redo a roof on a building he purchased for business.

I wasn't a professional so I was paid less, but anyways...

He wanted to use a mop to tar the roof.

I thought it was stupid to use a mop and said it would probably be easier and faster to use a long handled paint roller. A cheap Walmart mop just wouldn't be as good and easy as a long handled paint roller IMO, even I'm uneducated in roofing I think I am right

Which one of us was right?

I am a lazy bastard in the sense that I'm always trying to find the easiest and fastest way to do something.

Something like this! Pic related.

He was quite a character, too.

He mostly dealt in shady illegal affairs in his past I believe, but I'm proud to say after two felonies hes not wanting a third strike and a life sentace and a car wreck he nearly diednin convinced him there was divine intervention so he decided to go legit and get religion. He mostly hired drug addicts and paid under the table below minimum wage and I guess I freaked him out because I've always made my living in white markets and I don't do drugs anymore. I haven't been a pothead or drug addict for like 10 years. My opinion is you're either addicted to drugs or you've never tried drugs, so I've still got the monster in me.

Sorry for the exposition, just figured I'd liven up the thread a bit. Also sorry for improper sentence structure, grammar, etc. I'm still bad at English even though I'm born and raised American.

They always use mops to tar roofs.
Think of the roof as a set of ribs and you are coating the fuck out of it, with really hot smelly tar.
I have watched people tar roofs and they always use mops.
...And I secretly loved the smell of hot tar

>And I secretly loved the smell of hot tar
Smell of hot tar brings backs memories of when I was 6 and walking home from school. One week workmen were fixing a tar roof and had a huge pot of pubbling tar on the sidewalk. We talked to a workman while looking at the bubbling tar. Couldn't have been more then 2 feet from it. He was a nice guy, but asked us to back up as he was about to plonk more tar into the pot. I remember the cold tar being a cylinder. The pot was a large rectangle. Safety back in the 70s wasn't what is now.

Yes I realize trades like roofing are traditional and very slow to change but there's almost always a better way that's faster, easier, and cheaper.

You said nothing about if I was right or not.

Masons and bricklayers still use trowels and shit to cement bricks and whatnot but you could invent a tool that's better!

Traditional tools survive because they are easy and cheap to make.

Well think about it. You'd pick up maybe like 1/3 the amount of tar with a roller and the second you try and ROLL the ROLLER the tar would fuck it from rolling anymore. So what you've got is just a hot mess on the end of a stick.

With a mop you can soak up a lot more.

Also a garage floor is flat and requires a nice finish.

Sometimes things are just done a certain way because there is no easy way to do it.

>> No.1174574

i suppose it depends on the coat, if youre using the amount of tar youd use to paint a wall if it was paint, then yeh it work nice.

if its a thick coat and uneven surface then a mop. its a no brainer.

What if there was a specialty roller involved?

Yes I will grant most roller heads are designed to hold and spread less viscous material than tar.

But if it was designed for higher viscosity would it be easier?

They probably make specialized heads like that under some name.

Those rolls of tar you remember are called lugs, they are 111pounds each, when heated in a tar pot or kettle, by a propane burner the tar turns into the consistency of water, usually pumped up to the roof into a rolling bucket, or hauled up in a 5 gallon can, each lug is good for about 1 square or 100 square feet a 10 X 10 section, usually it is called hot mopping, usually used on flat roofs it is also called a built up roof, a base layer of asphalt felt paper is nailed to the roof deck, sometimes you can spot mop it down, then a layer of tar, then layers of asphalt ply are layered onto the tar and several layers are added, then either a cap sheet, this is an asphalt or bitmun fiberglass sheet that has stone granuels imbeded on the top side, often a smooth cap sheet is installed more tar mopped and roofing gravel 1 to 2 inches is added, a built up roof with the gravel layer is the best flat roof in the desert SW to have, the gravel prevents hail from damaging the cap sheet by absorbing the impacts, a Granulated Cap sheet gets a hole in it, only real way to apply a tar roof on a small business or residential roof is it a mop, on some large commercial roofs a sprayer is normally used, don't be stingy with the tar, let it flow where it wants to go and seal all the holes, normal house takes about 2 pallets of tar, so 36 to 40 lugs, gotta have a fire extinguisher handy, fires start all the time.

without having to delve into the details(like the difference in viscosity between paint and tar, and the volume of tar you can pick up with either, and the fact that the tar will most likely screw up the rotating mechanism in your roller pretty quick), have you considered this OP:

its the industry standard, and for a reason, thousands upon thousands upon of people have done roofing jobs and mops are the preferred way to do it. dont you think over the course of history someone wouldve thought of and tried using/modifying another incredibly commonplace tool(the paint roller) to do the job. i can assure you, you're not the first person to think of this concept, but it was not economically or operationally as efficient as the mop, and thats why your boss and the vast majority of roofers use mops to tar roofs.

Tar is around 480 - 550 degrees F.
A spinning roller can let it fly all over - serious hazzard.

A roller will also stop rolling fairly quickly due to getting gunked up.
Also, a mop will pull a lot more tar out of the bucket at once. Never, simply try to pour the tar from the bucket - major hazzard.
A mop is far faster and more efficient at spreading the tar around.
