I'm trying to devise a way to maintain a good personal hygiene without relying on conventional showers. Is there really no effective means to stay clean without dumping a fuckton of hot water all over you for 10 minutes everyday?

Do you have any ideas?
Conditions:
>Has to use a small amount of water (Preferably something like 5-10 litres or less)
>Environmentally friendly (So things like rubbing yourself all the time with a ton of baby wipes is out)
>Not too costly

Let's say this is meant for someone with a buzzcut and no body or pubic hair. Is it doable?

>Environment friendly so no baby wipes.
Fucking hippie. Use field wipes, military grade, surplus(cheap in bulk), biodegradable, and I can go a month on them while smelling fine.

The extra step is to use rubbing alcohol and a bar of anti bacterial soap between wipes. And make sure to use 2 wipes a bath, one that does from face to chest to legs to feet. And the second from nuts to ass.

As said. Navy shower, sink, or sponge bath.

Most people can shower every other day and smell fine. This alone cuts your water usage in half.

Take a warm or cold shower to cut down on your energy usage. If you want to remove it entirely, use cold water or warm up a jug of water in the sunlight.

This is what I do when camping. Hang up a black shower bag full of water and by the evening that shit is hot. I usually have to add cold water to avoid being burnt.

Also if you reduce your shower time drastically to 5 minutes you've again cut your consumption in half much more if you switch to navy showers.

Switch to 5 minute showers and take them every other day; 75% reduction. Navy shower of 2 minutes is a 80% reduction by itself and cut that to every other day 90% reduction.

Hell if you need to freshen up, keep a sealed container of alcohol with a cotton rag in it. Run that shit over your pits, balls and ass. As long as you don't have shit in your crack, the alcohol will kill all the bacteria and you can reuse the same rag for a week or more.

In college I lived in the dorms, we had suites so it was two single rooms that shared a bathroom.

Water was free since rent was retarded high, and the school had a heating plant so the hot water was endless.

I modified the shower head by removing the center flow regulator and that shower had so much pressure it felt a garden hose on the jet setting. Plus I did a rough calculation of about 3-4gpm. I would fucking sit in that chamber of hot liquid sex until my skin started coming off.

I've never had a shower that good since even with the multi-head units. Household showers just don't have that retarded pressure.

OP you got me re-thinking my own shower wastefulness.

I use a ton of water in the shower. I leave the water running from start to finish because it is a hassle to have to reset the taps again to the right temperature after each shut off.

I'm a navy in that I actually do not need that much water, in fact I stand back from the water most of the time, watching it go straight down the drain. But it's just a pita to fiddle with the taps 3-4 times every time I shower.

There are faucets that arrest the flow at the spout, not affecting the faucet settings at all; sadly I do not have one of those, but that's what I'd use if I had one. I'd probably reduce my water consumption to 10%. Some shower heads have an off switch, maybe I'll look into that, or maybe use a sharpie to mark off where I should dial my taps to make restarts less inconvenient.

If you care about wasting water why are you taking ten minute showers? Taking a three minute shower is far easier and more comfortable than any shower alternative suggested here. Low flow shower heads use about 6 liters per minute so that's only 18 liters for a full shower.

If you want to get to save even more water, just turn on the shower to get yourself wet for ten seconds, turn off the water, lather up, rinse off for like 30 seconds. Boom. 4 liter shower. You can even do this with a hose if you don't have a shower availible.

If you want to take it to an extreme you can give yourself a sponge bath with 1-2 liters of water. Just put a bit of rinse-free soap (if you use reguar soap you'll need a second basin of water to wash the soap off) in a basin with 1-2 liters of water and scrub yourself with a couple washcloths. There's pretty much no practical reason to do this if you have a shower availible since you're hardly saving any water, especially if you're recycling grey water to flush the toilet since even low flow toilets use at least 1.5 liters per flush, so you'll easily go through the 4 liters of water you used taking a shower.

If it's the power you're worried about, get a solar hot water system.

There is no reason not to shower daily if you live somewhere with running hot and cold water. If you don't do anything too strenuous you could get away with every second day but it'd be more about being lazy than saving the environment.

Why did I have to get halfway down the thread to find the most obvious answer?

You could buy a shower head with a cutoff/trickle setting built in. That's what I have. It's got 5 settings, one is a trickle. I spray down with water when I step in, then I wash my hair, rinse, wash my head, rinse, then do upper body, rinse, then lower body, rinse. A 10 minute shower only uses 3 minutes worth of water. But uh yeah.

Just turn the shower off when you're sudding up. It's like turning off the tap when you're brushing your teeth.

Sometimes if your hair is really oily(haven't showered in a while, doing dirty work, etc) it's best to use soap/body wash before you shampoo. Cold water/oily hair prevents the shampoo from foaming. So your shampoo might be doing fuck all. Try it next time, shampoo twice, second time you'll get way more suds.

Same goes for laundry soap, toothpaste, floor cleaner, lots of things. If you actually read the directions for stuff you can save quite a bit of money in the long run. Those scoops they include with laundry soap? In most cases, you should never put a full scoop in your washing machine. My laundry scoop is 'a cup' worth and it has 3 lines on it: a line at 1/4th, a line at about 1/3rd, and a line at 1/2. They are 'normal', soiled, and heavily soiled, respectively. A full scoop is two heavily soiled loads worth of soap.

Shampoo's functional ingredients are surfactants that allow oil to mix with water and wash away. Most surfactants form foam when mixed only with water because the surfactants form films with air and water that stabilize bubbles. It's not an added ingredient to impress you. When you use soap or shampoo and it doesn't produce foam or bubbles, it means that there is enough oil in the mix to fully use the available surfactants. Stopping the wash at that point can leave oil behind. Adding soap/shampoo until it foams ensures that there is enough surfactant to mix with the oil.

Shampoo typically uses less aggressive surfactants than soaps made for body use or general cleaning because hair needs some oil to stay in good condition, so there is typically some oil left behind even if it foams, but shampoos intended for use with a conditioner after may not leave much.

The one different situation is with soaps made for automated washers that can be messed up buy too much foam. These are made to mix with oil but not support films with air, and so don't produce many bubbles at any mix ratio.

It is pretty easy to take a shower using a few gallons (2-3). This is common in a lot of countries that are poverty stricken or that have poor infrastructure. Generally, this involves allocating a bucket of water for washing yourself and using a mug to pour water on yourself. That way you have tight control over where the water goes.
You just have to get yourself wet, lather up, scrub, the rinse.

This technique is only really effective with a tankless water heater system. With modern tank units there is only occasionally water put into the tank and hot water is made in batches. Unless you knew when your water heater was set to fill the heated water in the cold inlet pipe would just cool off into the ambient environment.

Also stop telling people to build and buy shit when a bit of conservation is the answer, just take colder, shorter showers with the water on less often. You should be drinking at least as much water a day as you would need for showering so it isn't such a big deal once you are responsible, plus its cheap.

Agree. You can also use a 10 gallon bucket of water or two and a pitcher to pour it on yourself. Leave it full so it gets to room temperature. It's surprising to see just how little water you really need, and what a waste showers are.

I doubt you even need that

I have a cabin with no running water and when I shower out there I heat up some water via electric stove until mildly hot and use one of these to pour it on myself every couple days.

Not the exact same brand as this one but mine holds around three gallons which is plenty, even using shampoo and stuff. I just have a little ledge screwed into a tree I can set it on so it's above you, since hoisting it up while also trying to bathe is a pain. Three gallons goes a very long way if you pay attention.

In Antiquity, Romans and Greeks used something called a strigil, which is essentially a metal scraper that you would use to remove dirt, sweat, and oils from the skin.

It was mostly used by athletes, and was effective because athletes used to apply oil to their skin to improve their aesthetics while exercising. Then, everything was scraped off after the fact, leaving the skin mostly clean.

You could probably get away with this if you clean your armpits, balls, and maybe your feet using soap, and the rest of you with a strigil. That would save a lot of water I think.

I take two 10 minute showers every day, wash dishes every other day, wash my car at least once a week, water the lawn twice a month when it's dry, do laundry every day, wash my hands obsessively, drink at least a gallon of ice water daily with new ice in every glass, leave the water running while brushing my teeth, have a high flow toilet and shower, and many other wastes of water. My bill has never gone above $20 per month, averaging $11/month. To save a "ton" of money on water, I'd have to completely quit using it for a few years.

Skin is reactive and pumps out less sebum and maintains an okay microbial balance if you don't fuck with it. I haven't washed my hair since 2016, and only shower below the waist when my ass needs shaving. Keeping the butthole clean is a key component of it. Shave it 1-3 times a month, wipe in front of mirror with tp, wet tp, and a wet wipe. Wipe armpits with wet cloth and apply deodorant before going anywhere. Change bedding sometimes.

Living this way hasn't kept the bf off me. He's like "wtf you must not sweat at all" when he rushes to go down on me and I inform him I haven't showered for a couple weeks.

Maybe I don't. I've never seen sweat stains on anything of mine. Being skinny helps with that.

My plant based diet may also play a role in not smelling like sour milk or whatever.

Sponge bath and "salt soap" (you know, the soap-shaped block of salt you can use as a soap and as a deodorant). For hair, a minimal amount of shampoo (you can mix it with water, you don't need as much as you think) and a bucket. To prevent excess sweating, smells and oily skin: good skin care with oil/lotion, antiperspirant/deodorant/salt soap/talc (depending on how heavily you sweat), cotton/silk/bamboo socks, underwear, and shirts.

You really don't need too much water for washing yourself, not even hair. I've washed a meter-long, really thick (wrist-sized braid) hair with a five-liter bucket.

first of all modern showers are wasteful but showering in general is efficient.
First thing first is get a selectable low flow shower wand. You want something that can do different settings that is 1 gpm or 1.5 gpm with pulse or high pressure settings. You don't need a 2.5 gpm head. 1 gpm is fine as long as the pressure is good and its a wand so you can get close to your scalp and or junk. Install a cut off valve. My rv has a button cut off. Super fast to cut off the combined cold and hot water. Long hot runs may cause issues with temperature swings but it really cut down on water waste. Get wet, cut off the water and spend the time lathering and scrubbing wasting nothing.
Look into a waste heat exchanger. basically a copper drain pipe with another small copper pipe wrapped around it. You can make your own or buy it. Efficiency varies. Lets you turn down the hot water as you shower. The semi hot water prewarms your cold water going to the shower. A lot of hot water ends up down the drain in a shower.
A sealed and insulated shower. Easiest way is to add a ceiling to the shower and seal it up as best you can. Add a closeable vent. Keep all that heat in. Do all that and you could shower on 5 gallons per shower or less with maybe 2 gallons of hot water and still be a luxurious and long shower.

Get a couple wash cloths and some bar soap. A small bucket that holds a half gallon or event less is enough to wash with. Wipe down your pits and pubic areas with one wash cloth that has soap in it. Then go ahead and wipe the soap off with the other wash cloth. Another trick is to use the menthol and camphor pain relief with a wash cloth on your nether regions then wipe it off and dry. You can also use menthol foot powder to absorb any water after washing or if BO is just starting to eliminate it and keep dry. Get dry shampoo for your hair. For under ten dollars you can be clean.

Ive gone months without showers (without leaving the house, working up a sweat, or otherwise doing anything that would get me dirty)

Patches of dirt start to accumulate on your body, you start to turn dark just from sitting around.
When you do eventually wash it, you have to scrub hard and dead skin scrubs off with it. It leaves a nasty whitish paste on your towels when you dry off if you didnt remove it all.
And trust me, after 3-4 months of no showering it takes several showers before you can actually scrub it all off.

I once had some water shortage in town and I took baths using a bucket full of water.
Around 10 liters of water for a very good bath. Nothing to complain about it, I felt clean and it was 90%+ as good as a normal bath.

>first put head over bucket and soak it in water
>then use shampoo and soap on head and neck
>wash and use the water falling down to already wet your back and chest
>then apply soap to back and chest
>use water falling from chest to soak abs and crotch
And so on. Taking one bath a day I was using basically 70l of water to bath a week. With more 1l a day I could use to wash hands, mouth wash and other personal hygiene.
