Get/build a small house that has enough space for your activities but doesn't require long hours of cleaning then clean it everyday. When I come back to home I help my mom cleaning and we clean everything all the time so you can use the floor as a dish if you want. I come back to another semester at uni and even try to keep my cleaning standards but I have two roommates so I give up and just live in this shitty fallout theme house.

A small clean house is much better than some dirty mansion with expensive dirty furniture.


Another tip I give to you is to test illumination levels. Two years ago I had those hospital 30W white bulb everywhere then switch to 3W warm yellow LED bulbs. Home is 300% better now and the LED pays itself requiring only 10% of the energy required by white bulbs. If you like light then choose cold white bulbs but 3 weaker bulbs well positioned will give you better illumination than a single 50 W bulb in the middle of the ceiling.

buy some land and build a small strawbale house, cover with an earthen plaster and add a comfy wood stove or rocket mass heater. its inexpensive, efficient, and looks quite cozy.

1) Pillows. Lots of pillows. Blankets too. Avoid white. Looks good in a magazine, but in person it feels sterile and impersonal.
2) Soft wall colors. Avoid reds, yellows and oranges. Warm greys are a favorite of mine.
3) Candles and soft white lights. Avoid harsh white "cool" lights as much as possible. They'll hurt your eyes and yellow light is shown to help you relax and sleep more.
4) Wood tones. Use wood wherever possible. It's inviting and warm and natural looking.
5) Clean your shit. Clutter will stress you the fuck out.
6) Have a designated office space. If you want to relax, seeing your workstation when you're up and around the house won't give you the comfy home vibe.
7) Area rugs, not carpet.

Having a morning and night routine every day is the best thing you can do to keep yourself and your home in shape, OP. I made cleaning up little things as soon as I get home from work a requirement in my day. I'm never cluttered and always comfy.

I built a little hidey home like that as a kid. Wasn't nearly as fancy, didn't have the sod roof for starters, but I built a little stone fireplace and would camp out in there every once in a while.
