I mean, it's not like I *fear* lead, lead is useful.

But non-leaded solder is just as good as the lead stuff these days, so I don't see a reason to use lead if I don't have to. I mean, how often do I buy a spool of solder? I solder a few hours every day, and I buy a spool every couple of years. 'Twice as expensive' is like, I spend 100,000x that just buying food.

According to /k/ lead poisoning is caused by ingestion and getting it any other way is incredibly difficult, so I would bet that had a lot to do with it. Then again if you had enough lead under your finger nails to poison you maybe you had enough on the rest of your body to qualify for the "incredibly difficult" methods.

If you've got steel wool or something to brush solder off your iron (I do) then it leaves lots of fine particles of solder inside the wool, and these fall out and could easily get under your nails if you're trying to pick up a tiny component.

regular wd 40 is really only god-tier at "Water Dispersal". Probably for spraying all over military equipment after being put through harsh conditions, to get the water away from where it shouldn't be.

wd 40 is essentially just kerosene with a few additives, so its not great for much else.

>> No.1149127

You select the bit you want, put it in the socket, and hold it in the screw to be driven. When the end is truck with a hammer, it delivers a sharp turning and pressing force to the screw (forward or reverse depending on how the toggle is set). This can deliver very high torque without stripping fasteners or requiring room for leverage.

WD is loved by machinists as cutting lube for aluminum. For protection, use protectant.

>> No.1149158

>>1149148
No, its loved because it boils off quick and acts as a coolant, in the same way kerosene does. When your working thousandths of millimetres, thermal expansion becomes a thing. Go read up on cutting compounds, and observe how they all cover cooling before lubrication.

basically dont use wd-40 whenever there is a product thats actually made to do the job.

ie, use penetrating oil to free rusty bolts. wd-40 lacks the capillary action of penetrating oils, which allows it to seep into the threads.

i could write pages upon pages of better products than wd-40 for thousands of uses. "multi-use product" is just marketing.

Lubricant, there's a fuckton. White lithium is usually the big one, or silicone for light duty stuff(drawer slides and the like), or you can get into the 50 other options. Penetrating oil, PB Blaster, Mouse Milk, Kroil, or ATF+Acetone(Generally in okayest->best order). Rust prevention, the WD-40 branded Long Term Corrosion Inhibitor, depending on what you're doing(my rarely used drill press column, for example), or a billion other options. Rust removal, Coca-Cola, naval jelly, WD-40 branded rust removal stuff, vinegar, or a ton of other options designed for rust removal. Degreasing, Dawn dish soap,WD-40 branded degreaser, Brakleen, or, again, anything actually designed for it. Removing sticky goo from labels, Goof Off, Goo-b-gone, acetone, etc. WD-40 is awesome because if you're only buying one can of goo, it can do ALL of that, and more, but if you want the best for the job, it's almost never WD-40.

WD40 a shit.

DoubleTT from the UK is the best penetrator I've used.
It can somehow get into places others can't.
Also cheap at €7 for a giant sized 600ml can.

BRUNOX from Austria makes a great spray grease, among other stuff.
It works great for firearms and lasts a long time. Kind of like a modern Cosmoline.

German Ballistol is the best all rounder.

Japanese Soft99 has the best straw. Its made of metal and extremely precise.
