if the threads inside the pipe coming out of the wall is ok, u can just replace the entire knob with a new one

The head? You mean the handwheel or handle?
Yes it can be removed, but its probably rusted to shit on there.

Also where was it leaking? from the bonnet or from the stem area. If it was leaking from the stem it probably just needs to be repacked.

It was leaking from the bonnet. The entire thing is over 45 years old and I had to replace it completely

Use some Teflon tape and put some pipe thread compound over the tape. Double safe. Not even memeing.
