What's a grayish, powdery, nontoxic substance I can use to mimic common dust? Something that can be applied quickly.

Need this for use in a film. Everyone recommends baby powder, but it shows up as too white, even on camera.

That's what you use to cause anthrax scares in the post office, you retard.

If you want dust, then use dust. If you're too much of a pussy to breathe in poussiere, then fuck off with the dust; you breathe it in everyday of your life anyways.

Just collect actual dust. It's all over the place. If you're making a film you should have plenty of staff and relatives with dusty attics and basements you can offer to clean.

You joke, but I promise it'd sell. Realism doesn't matter. It's not about what's real, it's about what feels and looks good at a glance. Almost nothing you see in a film is real, and there's damn good reason for it. Here's why people recommending actual dust are mongoloids:
>Dust contains hairs, debris, bits of web, and clumps that are too too small and numerous to be controlled or altered in a timely manner for closeups. If it can't be controlled fast and practically, to minute detail, then it's not appropriate. Maybe if you were just throwing that shit on the floor, it'd be fine, but we're not.
>Can't realistically get enough of it. You have to assume things will go wrong. Shit will get spilled, things will be done incorrectly and have to be done over, etc. Murphy's law. If I can't have buckets of spares sitting by on set, then it's not appropriate.
>Actors are whiny pussies and will pout about their sinuses or some shit if they suspect that the dust is real. This wastes valuable time.
>Literally collecting dust would be cheaper, but so time consuming that it simply isn't worth it, even if it was perfectly consistent and controlled. A small production doesn't have enough people on board to have a guy spend three afternoons vacuuming up attics. That's fucking ridiculous.

Home baker here.
That flour is almost as white as bleached. In reality, "unbleached" just means they let it lighten naturally instead of using a speedy chemical.

Functionally, the main benefit of that is that it works better for bread. It also goes over great with the natural-foods crowd. But when it comes to looks, it's nothing like unbleached paper. I could only tell the difference between it and standard white flour by putting it directly side-by-side.

I think you are an idiot for various reasons, but this is what you need.

If you need a cloud instead of a coating use fullers earth.

Since this is/diy/ squire both and several other powders of various types and make several blends of fake dust and tell us which blend is the most dust like.

OP is an idiot for two reasons:
a) if you're really concerned about non-toxic, specify whether it needs to be applied to people or just set dressing.
and b) why aren't you asking movie people what they use? Surely there's something they already know of that works and looks good for this exact purpose?

Or perhaps cement if you need it utterly grey. Might be too fine though.
