Has anyone here made a cutting die before?

Is there any big secret besides bending a metal strip into shape?

I want to use mine to cut felt and fabrics like that.

...there is more engineering than "bending a metal strip into shape"... but for diy use, yes you can do that, or at least sharpen it before bending.

Die cutting rules can be hard to find for cheap in small quantities, shop around. Since you're only cutting felt, stuff on alibaba will do, unless you need a specific blade profile.

As for making the actual die, drill holes every inch in order to screw the steel rule into a wooden template after bending. Actual distance will change depending on the shape of the die. Use the wooden template to assist in bending.

Shape your metal, sharpen, hit down with a hammer. I wouldn't bother with a serrated edge.

Use a thin kerf saw to cut a groove in the upper plate to guide the blade into place when making the die.
Over-cuts for corners are fine.
