How well would pic related work for a noob looking to learn welding?
What are good places to get scrap metal for practice?

I've watched youtube videos on this subject.

Basically there are a lot of cheap welders out there that don't work too well and overheat very quickly. They can be good if you have something small in mind, but not if you want to keep it for a lot of jobs.

Obviously a better more expensive welder is going to be easy to work and learn on.

I know someone who bought one of those (against my advice). they have a 10% duty cycle and easily pull over 20amps even though they say they only pull 15. you need a 30am circuit to run one, and the wire is always live when power is on. I would not spend less than $400 on a mig welder.

I have one of these and it's a decent hobbyist level welder for the cost. Easy to use and can lay a decent bead with practice. Only real cons are it only has two current setting(high/low) and it welds in AC. It is easy to convert to DC for a higher quality weld, but at that point you should have just went ahead and bought a slightly higher quality machine to begin with.Simply put, if you anticipate getting serious about welding then go ahead and get a higher quality one.

New steel is typically quite reasonable and your supplier can saw it to length convenient for you to take home. It is MUCH better to practice on clean steel and begin with pad welding beads about 6" long next to each other to build muscle memory. For example you can buy a 20' stick of 1-1/2" angle 3/16" thick, cut to short length for transport, and weld on both sides. That's a good bit of area. Steel suppliers usually have "cutoffs" or "drops" left over they may sell cheap to clean out the pile instead of scrapping it.

The little FCAW wire welding machines are exasperating to learn on because they're underpowered, often have poor arc quality, and frequently have inconsistent feed. I regard them as a way to sabotage noob weldors. I built and ran a welding school toolroom, repaired and maintained welders and other equipment, and rebuild OA gear for fun.

I want to see many happy successful noob weldors and carry on as my mentors did for me. I'm not the finest weldor in the world (shoulder replacement, nerve damage, eyesight) but properly perform the joints I need by practicing each beforehand then destructive testing. Learn to train yourself. Persistence is everything and welding is incredibly useful.

Sound advice.

It being impossible to go into the required detail in ephemeral threads. Have some outstanding resources.
https://weldingweb.com/vbb/
https://forum.millerwelds.com/
https://weldtalk.hobartwelders.com/ Slow but worthwhile for Hobart machines.

Besides shitloads of useful info on machines you can start with there are many threads on how to buy used and new welding machines and how to buy gas cylinders. I've over 4K posts on WW and even the basic training and equipment pastas (from anyone) would be too long for this thread.

A 240V machine is vastly more capable than a 120V shitbox, and a ~180A MIG machine (which can run FCAW if you need to save to buy a gas cylinder) will likely weld whatever steel you need.

My uncle purchased the SMAW (Stick/Arc) HF model, and I've played with it. It works as imagined. I did a small 1/16, 6013 rod, my dad purchased in the 1980's. Still good. And 6013 is easy to work and does ZERO penetration.

I'd say...yeah. It plugs into a 110V outlet, try some tacking, and maybe run some beads.

>I have an Oxyacetylene torch laying around, would that be okay to learn on?

It's a wonderfully useful and versatile process ignored today because people fear gas or something and are socially conditioned to think electrical things are better than gassy things.

Use a face shield instead of goggles (goggles are trash). I use Jackson headgear with a shade 5 shield. Your local welding supply will have them. The gas welding section on Weldingweb is good but spend a few dollars and get a copy of the Oxwelder's Handbook, no later than the 1939 edition which was peak OA when everything TIG does today was done by torch (including aluminum).

https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?cm_sp=SearchF-_-topnav-_-Results&kn=The%20Oxwelder%27s%20Handbook&sts=t

Fine tips are great for sheet metal. An OA outfit can do anything from jewelry to cutting up ships for scrap. Requiring no electricity it's mobile and needs no grid. It can weld, braze, solder, cut, melt small amounts of metal for casting, heat steel for easy bending and forging and more.

I have plenty of industrial welders but would never be without my OA gear (I rebuild my own regulators and torches, and collect torches as a hobby). Older US made torches and regulators tend to be high quality and I've torches from the 1930s still on the original seals passing pressure tests well in excess of working pressure. If your regulators ever need overhaul your local welding supply can route them or you can find services on the internet. (Check Weldingweb for reliable businesses.)

Take your time and outfit a practice area (which can be small). Welding is repeated, consistent fine motor movements developed by relentless practice. A decent thickness to begin with is clean 1/8" sheet, flat bar or angle. You can get filler rod at your local welding supply but a good way to begin practice is welding without filler.

They have nice arc quality and you can do far more with AC electrodes than most people think. However Radnor electrode quality varies widely so keep that in mind. Lincoln, Hobart, ESAB etc are more consistent.

60A is ample. I've run MUCH larger machines off 50A (tho not maxed out).

https://weldingproductivity.com/article/ac-vs-dc/

Set up a practice area, buy some clean steel from your local supplier and begin by making weld beads (not joining parts, just straight practice beads) of at least six inches length to build muscle memory.

Visit welding forums because proper training methods and practices are too complex to type in ephemeral threads. https://weldingweb.com/vbb/ I suggest posting a thread asking how to set up your practice area, what basic tools to have, and other relevant info for self-training with an AC machine. Welding is not intuitive so study then execute. The Miller site has free training videos online.

It's not difficult to practice the same way one learns in formal training and will make you a better weldor much quicker than the usual Bubba thrashing. Ensure you can see well at working distances.

You can self-teach brazing but copy the way the pros train including setting up a practice area and practicing on clean metal of the type you will work with. A cool thing about brazing is you can melt off the old braze then clean your practice parts to braze again.

Don't buy cheap generic offshore gas welding equipment. (I don't even resell it and scrap it instead when it turns up in auction lots. I collect and rebuild OA gear.) Do study welding forums like Weldingweb which is an excellent OA resource. tinmantech's website has lots of good torch info too. Quality US made regulators are a lifetime tool and can be rebuilt (via local welding supply or online rebuilders).

OA is highly versatile and well worth knowing. Different brazers/weldors have different lens or shield color and shade preferences so try a variety. It's cheap enough and important so you can see the puddle.

Post your question here and explain you're a noob starting from scratch. It's a friendly community.

https://weldingweb.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?2-MIG-TIG-Stick-And-Oxy-Fuel-Welding

I have all major brands of OA gear (Victor, Smith, ESAB, Concoa, Airco, Harris, Purox/Oxweld and relatives) and would not hesitate to buy a used outfit via Craigslist but study Weldingweb first. Cylinders are filled by exchange so know what you can swap when buying used cylinders. Never lease as a hobbyist. You can also buy new cylinders, but they get swapped out so get the best price you can.

You will develop preferences for specific torches because ergonomics are personal, but thanks to Ebay it's easy and cheap to own a variety.

Now go read and all you seek to know will be answered.

I have one very much like that they work very well HOWEVER:
Before you use it open it up and verify that components and wires that should not be touching (are not touching).
Do some wire management, the heat sinks in them are very sharp on the edges and the wires tend to be run any which way.
I replaced the welding wire that came with them. It is very short like 3 or 4 feet of 6 awg. I ordered some 2 AWG in 7ft lengths.
I also got an extended no questions asked warranty. But if they don't die within the first week or 2 of use then they will probably last a long time as the components in them are actually quite good.

Even though they say that they will work on 115 volts they can only go up to about 90 amp and have a reduced duty cycle.

BUT depending on what you are trying to do you may just wanna bite the bullet and get the AHP tig machine if you’re gonna do small stuff, and just do the big stuff with stick. Stick is smarter sometimes anyways, you can weld through rust safely with the correct rods
Bottom line the one you posted is cheap and somewhat dangerous, and will not work worth a damn without a lot of headache, but there are other options around for not much more money that will last you way longer and allow you to actually weld
