Been wanting to buy one of these

Its a 3/8 socket that can clamp onto different sized bolts.
I would think it might be useful on stripped bolts.

Not sure how well it would actually work though, and you cant go to a hardware store or amazon and buy it, you have to buy it from their awful website.

product designers, especially college student product designers are the stupidest people on the planet.
Just the existence of a course or profession, that functions around the idea that a little bit of competence with CAD and absolutely zero experience of the real world applications of the shit you are designing is enough to make a good product.
They should literally all kill themselves, the end up designing all that shit you see in late night infomercials while actual creative people are inventing groundbreaking shit for use in their industry or area of expertise using their decades of experience of solving their specific problems.
I real hate product designers, especially the students.

>What looks flimsy about it?

There is nothing holding the six segments together around the head of the bolt.

>Its no more flimsy than an adjustable wrench
an adjustable wrench has a a moveable jaw mounted on a track that is adjusted by a screw which maintains the jaws position for use.

The design in the OP has none of the above.
Unless you're suggesting there are six similarly functioning tracks and six adjustment screws controlling the six aperture segments... nothing is holding them in place, and any torque applied to the hex faces of a bolt head would merely spread open the aperture.

the design shown in this image
>>862770
is superior to a typical adjustable, or crescent wrench, in that it firmly grasps 4 out of 6 sides of a nut or bolt rather than two flat sides like most typical open end wrenches.
4 out of 6 sides by 2 corners, is vastly superior to 2 out of 6 sides by the flats.

But let's not get carried away comparing apples to oranges. A box end wrench cannot do what an open end wrench can --- access a nut from the side. As the design in OP is box-endish it shouldn't be compared to open end wrenches, as the superior strength of box end designs has long been established.

Conclusion: OP's design doesn't have a strong enough rubber band holding it together.

step one. apply the wrench to your nut

I think we all agree that all universal tools kinda suck. This means, universal tools should only be applied in situations where normal tools are unavailable, e.g. for space or weight constraints. I can't carry a toolbox on my bike, but the smallest of these Knipex universal wrenches is just fine. I can even adjust spoke tension with it, try that with a hexagonal shaped universal ring wrench. You need losts of space around the bolt head for those, the Knipex also works in narrow situations.

She called me to say it started making a weird noise and I heard a loud engine in the background. I told her to shut it off and I'd tow it to my house. I got ready and walked outside. I heard a loud car off in the distance, I knew the sound. I chuckled, "some asshole is driving around with a dry engine." And then she pulled up in my drive way. I was just like, "...fuck." I replaced the sensor and filled it up. She asked if it was ok now. I said only time will tell. 2 days later she called me stranded, so I went and checked it out. Plugs are firing so the crankshaft is turning(distributor), pull timing belt cover and see that's intact, no pressure in cylinder 2 and 3, assume head gasket. Take it back and break down the engine. That's when I saw one of the most incredible things I've ever came across aside from a crankshaft or pinion gear exploding and sending parts through an oil pan. The drivers side cam shaft bearing seized. It caused the cam shaft to snap in half, an almost perfect and clean snap, in a 2 inch thick cast iron rod.

I love these. I have about 300 different sockets, but I'll grab one of these to take to a Mobil job over some of my other sets.

>I told her to shut it off and I'd tow it

>Dumb bitch keeps driving.

Damn son.

I had a bad leak in an GM 88 turd. I usually kept a quart and kept it topped up because I tried twice to change enough seals to fix it, but it's impossible to drop the oil pan in it... So fuck it, slow leak is slow.

Once I had been too long without a top up and was out of my backup. heard a nice new tapping noise. Oh shit.

Just around corner from gas station. Pull in. Get a quart... Let is percolate down... still not on the dipstick. Get another quart... Okay, diptstick okay. Let it idle for a while... Stuff gets back in place.

Everything is fine.

Was only dry enough that it was complaining for like 500 feet. Very lucky.

-----
When I got it, the ECM died quickly. Took it to dealer to get it replaced because no one else in town wanted to order the ECM. Dealer does it. Runs fine. Great.

Like 4 years later just before I end up selling it and the third try I give this oil leak thing a really good go... Check the oil pressure sensor and filter housing.

They had maliciously bent the pins in the housing to always show max (green = good) on the dash. I thought it was strange it ALWAYS showed max pressure after the ECM deal, and figured it was just characteristic of the engine when it's running properly. No. They destroyed the sensor. (They also used an oil filter twice the size of what it's supposed to be for that car, but that isn't why the pins were bent. they had to take it off the car, and fold that shit over)

>the fuck kind of dealer sells you a lawnmower without any oil in it?
Home depot, for one. Most lawnmowers in a box don't have oil in them.

Damn man, I know they were just like "...fuck it." I had an 89 suburban, last year they rolled out of the flint plant. I had that thing for 8 years. I know the pinging noise you're talking about, because one time I was on the freeway and I heard it. Pulled off the next exit to check it out. My rusty oil pan decided it didn't like to hold my oil in place Any more so it decided to dump it across the highway. I always had tools in it, so I called a buddy and he scooped me and took me to a you pull yard. I pulled one off and threw it in on the side of the rode. I wanted an excuse to rebuild the engine anyway so I ran it dry to the gas station to get oil. 5 years later it developed a cracked head that was unrelated. I couldn't believe it didn't hurt it, but those engines are pretty bulletproof.

My dad uses something vaguely similar to this for biking. Not every tool has to be 'ultra-heavy duty, serious work for serious people' you know.

That said, this looks like it was designed to be pretty more than actually work. Dieter Rams is suffering in the afterlife from the state of contemporary product designers.

for light duty applications an aperture wrench can work fine.

the 3D renderings of the wrench are impossible because for say a given 6 blade aperture, the bolt head has to be actuated by all six blades. this means for say a half inch bolt face, each blade could only be 1/12th of an inch to get all 6 sides to contact.

the shitty hack of an artfag who paid 20 grand a year to learn how to use maya when you can do that for free failed to realize his renders don't make any fucking sense, and probably thinks his photography is somehow deep and arty instead of capturing light. fucking hipster filters.

you know what kind of apertures are really cool? the ones with rounded blades so your bokeh isn't ugly like the shitty 5 blade apertures your typical artfag student has on their nifty 50 1.8 which they unironically shoot at f/2.2 because they bumped the setting because the camera has so many buttons they don't understand but it's cool to shoot at 1/8000 wide open for that artsy fartsy look, who really cares what's in focus anyway?

see this is why i don't go to /p/ anymore and sold all my expensive lenses.

even with rounded edges, you need an extremely cheap 6pt socket to cam out. a real socket will not cam off the bolt like the little shitty flexible thin walled non hardened ones do.
