There is a Game Boy Advance game called Soundvoyager https://youtu.be/kOMJ9VJvIBw.. It is designed to be played by listening to the sound. You press each of the shoulder buttons to move left and right to collect or avoid sounds.

I would like to play this while riding my bicycle around. So I need a button on each end of my handle bars that hooks up to some sort of device capable of playing GBA roms and will also output sound via 3.5mm plug.

Any suggestions? PS. I cycle off road.

I have an idea that may or may not be good.
You could get two short camera shutter button extensions and find some way of fitting them from your handle bar to your game boy.
Might work.

Or, ya know, just run wires off the GBA mainboard (or whatever board OP uses to run his ROM's on) to the ends of the handlebars, and attach a button to the end of each.

He doesn't have a board.

Shutter buttons are probably built to last though with nice quality cables. So I think they would work well if they were attached to the mainboard as you suggest. I'm not experienced with electronics.

I can buy one if that's simpler, they're pretty cheap. Not all GBAs have 3.5mm output and I don't know how easy they are to modify in the way I would like.

Could be a Raspi, could be a gutted GBA, could be fucking anything.

That wasn't my point.

It needs to be the device most likely to survive being on a bicycle.

Your point was to use a mechanical interlink to control an electronic input, no?

Either way, OP is not going to be running this thing on a babbage engine. There will be an electronic device at its core, which will provide a location to tap in and run the buttons remotely. You don't into electronics much, do you tripfag?

So the Game Boy Micro is the smallest GBA with a 3.5mm output. It will mount nicely and work with my headphones. Boot up ROMs via a flash cart easier than a raspi (no screen, input)

So I guess it just comes down to finding buttons that will work with the GBA micro board.

something like this workable? maybe this is a little too clunky for my needs.

That button looks completely unergonomic, which is actually important when cycling. If you're not afraid to drill into the handlebars, and stamp a hole in the rubber grip, I would suggest you do that and mount a nicer switch.

I have seen this guy do this which is quite a nice temporary solution. Doesn't damage the bike's resale value

It's a thumb switch. They are actually quite easy to use if you have oposable thumbs.

Do you need to see the screen? I don't know this game but sounds nice to cycle around jamming to something purely musical.

You could play it from an emulator on a smartphone and buy a cheap bluetooth controller that you can put on the steering. That way you don't have to risk shock damage to the GBA and leave it in your pocket.

Hmm... got me thinking I'd like to do something similar to control music when on my bike.
