I was waiting to let you start the new thread~

What's the best way to cut coils for rings?
I'm using 14ga galvanized steel, and the dremel takes too much material out [and mine is insane, randomly spinning up and down].

>> No.76311

>>76246

Using cutters will work and it wont remove any material. It doesn't leave a flat end though so if you are just butting the rings together it will either look crappy or require a second step to finish (with a file or whatever). If you plan on welding or riveting its probably not a big deal.

>> No.76319

>>76311
I'm just butting the rings.
I guess I'll try different saws until I find one that doesn't take 3 years to cut one ring, and leaves a tiny gap.

I'm really liking the saw cut rings from TRL.
Those things are so sexy.

saw cut rings are sexy.
I've only ordered rings thus far, and want to wait to build a rig or have a friend build a rig before I start cutting.

>> No.76357

I find it fascinating, but is there any practical application to learning to knit chainmail?
For instance, if you knit a chainmail thing for your undercoat, would it serve as a bulletproof vest? Would it stop a modern knife from penetrating your skin?

Just seems like making clothing out of steel would offer little protection, be heavy and a danger if you got near a metal detector.

>> No.76362

>>76357
With strong enough metal it might stop a knife. Bullet, no fucking way.

And by the way there are actually practical applications for chainmail. Knife handling gloves come to mind. I saw a woman at a sandwich shop wearing chainmail gloves, for example.

>> No.76448

Shark armor that divers wear when they swim with sharks is basically chain mail.

I'd bet chain mail would be good protection from zombies.

Decoration. I'm planning on making aluminum chain mail curtains from a suggestion in another thread on /diy/.

Waiting to get a rig set up is a good idea, I'm making do with a small [~2" wide] bench vise, and a red hacksaw from home depot.
Need more blade before I can cut more rings though.

What do you guys think of this guy's mail?
I have issues with it, it's 14ga, but there's no way it would protect you from anything smaller than a jumbo sharpie.

I ordered 4 backs of 14ga 7/16'' ID Bright aluminum rings. Off the top of my head they were 500 rings to a bag. My desk is in my closet and I have book shelves above my desk and plan on making a chain mail "skirt" to hide the shelves. The area I'm covering would be about a 6 foot by 1.5 foot rectangle. Going with the european 4-1 weave should 2000 rings be enough?

I guess I'll see but just curious. Have no problem ordering more. Hell I'm even considering putting a slightly longer skirt of different color and ring size behind it for a cool layered look.

Well fitted mail is not heavy at all, with the weight spread evenly across your entire body it's not cumbersome at all.

Mail has no chance of being bullet-proof. In fact getting shot through a mail vest will only make matters worse as broken rings will enter into your body alongside the bullet.

Of course mail vests are stab-proof. They used to stop swords for crying out loud. The mail will have to be well made, however with welded/riveted rings.

Hey guys, recently started reading up on chainmail and ordered 16 ga anodized aluminum from the ring lord and scale mail sampler- I plan on making a byzantine bracelet for a friend, and I wanted to use multiple colors- is there any guide for which rings will make certain color patterns? I can't get the third ring in the 'middle' section up to to fit in, at all.

Good news, I made myself a bracelet, 6in1, 14ga aluminum, 16ga rubber, both 5/16"id.

>> No.90961

Okay, I got the section to fit, but still, is there a preferred AR for 6in1?
Because the 5/15id/ 14g rings I use aparrently have an AR of ~3.9.
I know it works well for 4in1, nice and tight, almost too tight for 6in1 though.

>> No.91356

>>90961
>>90928
I found the same problem with 6in1, there's like one end you can't work on unless you have arms of steel, and the other that is hard, but manageable.
6in1 is much more dense than 4in1.
5/16' is supposedly pretty good in 6in1 (friend wants me to make a hauberk of it... Yikes!) but it's probably that you used 14g and the rings are too thick to manage without driving you nuts.
I've got 16g 1/4" and one of my mentors says it's good for 6in1.

If I get more 16g 5/16' rings, I will test out how they work with 6in1, right now the ones that I do have are in a panel to test for a hauberk in 4in1 and it is too loose.

Taking the plunge and make a hauberk this winter break.

I think I need "hauberk making for dummies"...

I've estimated(using TRLs hauberk calculator) for about 8000+ rings.
This is in 14g 3/8", which seems to be the best size for hauberks.

Stainless steel will cost $125
Galvy $82
Mild $77

Since this IS my first hauberk, I will go for the middle ground and pic galvanized steel.

This will be MUCH cheaper if I can convince one of my friends to make rings for me since they already have mandrels, snips, etc...
One has already offered to wrap some for me when I go out to visit probably in the next few months, but I can't wait that long...
It was also an offer for some bright aluminum to make a battle dress, cause I sure as hell aint making one out of steel.
FUCK YEAH BATTLE DRESS~!
(think queen from Narnia, except I will probably make it like a horseman's hauberk and have the split up the legs...)

And with that picture you posted I can definitely see how 16ga would work well for 6in1.

So I just went to the ringlord and I want to get started with this first using stuff like bracelets and other jewelry to play with. So I was looking at getting one of the anodized aluminum jewelry kits to start with.

Is this a good idea? Also what gauge would y'all recommend?

>> No.92110

>>91765
Getting a jewelry kit isn't the best idea because if you happen to not like the size after working in it for a few weaves, you are out of luck and are out a lot of money.
Get individual bags, try out different metals and sizes, and buy rings that work for different weaves.

I can't really suggest individual rings, because you might not like what I do, but if you are set on anodized aluminum, I fancy it in 14g or 16g 1/4".
These sizes work well for 4in1, box chain, byzantine, the 16g in spiral and double spiral, and both in half persian 3in1.
This size is versitile.

But, I would suggest looking up (say on the TRL gallery) items you may want to make, and buying rings and metals that work for those weaves.

There's also jewelry kits that you can totally get cause they have multiple sizes, but I'm just worried you might buy a size you don't want to work in...

Good luck!

That makes some sense. I wanted to purchase aluminum jewelry kit first because I've got a massive amount of steel and copper wire just chillin' around, plus everything I'd need to wrap/cut it (well, with the exception of possibly something to serve as a mandrel but then wooden dowels can suffice for now and for cheap). Anyone ever thought of replacing a grill with chainmail?

I might get a truck with a grill similar to the pic, and I was wondering about building some chainmail around some support rods and bolting that in place. I hate the way these things look when they get all dented up from hitting rocks and birds, so chainmail would likely solve that issue.

There is about 3" between thee grill placement and the front of the radiator, so I don't think it'd be hard at all to make it tight enough to prevent a depression that deep.

Just as a heads up to the fellow maillers in here with less experience, raw aluminum is not a very good choice for jewelry. Aluminum oxidizes very quickly and will leave a black residue on skin if not kept meticulously clean and polished. Maintenance will definitely become a pain in the ass if you want to keep raw aluminum looking good. When making jewelry from aluminum, anodized is the way to go. It's the best (and pretty much only) way to ensure the longevity of piece while keeping it maintenance free.
