Tools: A cutting tool like a razor blade, exacto-knife or sharp scissors, glue and a permanent marker.

Materials: One 2-liter soda bottle, one roll of 1″ wide rubberized foam insulation strip, and one N95 particulate mask.

Step 1. Use the permanent marker to draw out a U-shaped area just big enough to fit your face. You want the mask to fit snug against your face so start small and work your way up if you have to.

Step 2. Cut away the bottom of the bottle just above the start of the ridged footer area. Then carefully cut along the lines of the template to remove the U-shaped section from the bottle. Once you have the basic shape defined, hold the bottle up to your face to make sure it fits well. Make any necessary adjustments for an optimal fit. Again, you want it to be tight, but not uncomfortable.

Step 3. Using a single length of insulation, fold it over the edges of the bottle a little at a time until you work your way back to the beginning. Over-lap the insulation by at least 1/2″ to get a complete and secure seal. Make a circle of insulation inside the bottle roughly 2″ up from the spout. This will serve as a resting place for the N95 mask.

Step 4. Carefully remove the 2 elastic bands and metal bridge from the N95 mask. Set the elastic bands aside for later use, feel free to discard the metal bridge. Carefully remove the majority of the edging from the mask, leaving just enough to keep the edges sealed. Push the mask down into the neck of the bottle, angling the filter outwards and down towards the spout.

Step 5. Make 4 small holes in the sides of the mask, 2 near the top and 2 near the bottom. Feed the ends of the elastic bands through the body of the Soda Bottle Gas Mask and tie them off so they can be pulled back through. Seal the holes with a bit of glue to prevent leaks in the mask.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/25/health/ebola-fatu-family/

It can be exhausting nursing a child through a nasty bout with the flu, so imagine how 22-year-old Fatu Kekula felt nursing her entire family through Ebola.

Her father. Her mother. Her sister. Her cousin. Fatu took care of them all, single-handedly feeding them, cleaning them and giving them medications.

And she did so with remarkable success. Three out of her four patients survived. That's a 25% death rate -- considerably better than the estimated Ebola death rate of 70%.

Fatu stayed healthy, which is noteworthy considering that more than 300 health care workers have become infected with Ebola, and she didn't even have personal protection equipment -- those white space suits and goggles used in Ebola treatment units.

Every day, several times a day for about two weeks, Fatu put trash bags over her socks and tied them in a knot over her calves. Then she put on a pair of rubber boots and then another set of trash bags over the boots.

She wrapped her hair in a pair of stockings and over that a trash bag. Next she donned a raincoat and four pairs of gloves on each hand, followed by a mask.

It was an arduous and time-consuming process, but Fatu was religious about it, never cutting corners.
UNICEF Spokeswoman Sarah Crowe said Fatu is amazing.

Oral Rehydration Therapy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_rehydration_therapy

- 30 ml sugar : 2.5 ml salt : 1 litre fluid
- 6 teaspoons sugar : 0.5 teaspoon salt : 1 quart fluid (approx. 1 litre)

This will help keep you alive if you get Cholera or Dysentery... the diseases you are most likely to get after a big natural disaster in refugee land.

A well prepared home chemist can keep herself in Bleach (for water purification and disinfection) using Electrolysis.

Conduct electrolysis of salt water using a number of electrodes at 4.5-5 volts. The solution must be kept below 40C/104F or you get a different and undesirable product, Sodium Chlorate.

The "strength" of the Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) solution can be determined by titration. This requires Potassium Iodide, Starch, and Sodium Thiosulfate.

The poorly equipped chemist is advised to stockpile Sodium Hypochlorite or Calcium Hypochlorite pool shock instead.

8 drops of 6% bleach solution will purify 1 gallon of clear water, given 30 minutes to act.

>maintaining oxygen status
I know of four /diy/ methods for producing oxygen.
The first is reaction of Hydrogen Peroxide with one of many chemicals to free its oxygen. This seems grossly unreasonable for an apocolypse as H2O2 is a PITA to /diy.

The second is electrolysis of water in a divided cell and is very /diyable.

The third is distillation of air, and is surprisingly diy-able. http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-liquid-nitrogen-generator/

The fourth is the technology used in home oxygen concentrators. A machine uses a pair of zeolite cylinders. In use, one of the cylinders is pressurized to 2-3 atmospheres. At this pressure, the zeolite readily adsorbs nitrogen from the air. After a time the enhanced air is purged into a holding vessel and administered to the patient, usually with a nasal cannula. To regenerate the zeolite, ambient air is introduced and allowed to flow through the cylinder. By alternating two cylinders between production and regeneration, a continuous flow of gas can be created.

Post-Apocolyptic Opiate Painkillers.

Poppy seeds are a common spice in the US. These seeds, if planted, (Felony) will grow into Papaver somniferum (Illegal), the plant that Opium (Illegal) and Heroine (Illegal) are made from. These are made by cutting the immature seed pods and gathering the dried sap that weeps from the wound.(Federal pound you in the ass prison illegal.) Another method of administration is to make a tea of the dried flower and seed pod. (both possession and use are illegal)

These are addictive and desperate addicts are extraordinarily dangerous, even in good times. These should only be used in grave emergencies, or as palliative care of those preparing to die.

It is also possible for the well equipped chemist to produce morphine from this source material.
http://www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/chemistry/morphextr.html

It goes without saying that this is illegal as well.

The agriculturally ambitious might be interested to know that there are seed available commercially for a double-petaled black Papaver S. that looks nothing like the normal P.S., but still contains opiods. (Illegal)

>Ebola specifically:
Ebola is believed to be transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Airborne transmission has not been proven or disproven. It is believed, but not proven, that bats may be carrier animals. The incubation period is from 2 to 21 days. The first symptom is usually headache, followed by back and joint pain, muscle cramps, disorientation\depression, loss of appetite, uncontrollable bleeding, bloody vomit, bloody diarrhea, and death.

The disorientation bit is particularly disturbing. A person may be fully aware they are dying of the disease and possibly infecting others, yet not care.

In crude conditions 10% survival rates are not uncommon. With excellent medical care this can exceed 60%.

The case in Dallas is not the first time that Ebola has touched the US Mainland. There were an unknown number of cases of ebola in a monkey quarantine facility in Reston Virginia in the late 80s. That strain, despite several opportunities to make the human jump, appeared to only effect Monkeys. (We were lucky.) Richard Preston wrote "The Hot Zone" about this and it is absolutely worth reading. Mr. Preston does a fine job of making the book read with all the suspense of a Michael Crichton novel.

20 minutes in what contaminated atmosphere?
With biologicals, it's filtering sub micron particles and oxidizing them with colloidal silver, or iodine. For radionuclides it's just a hepa filter.
For chemical, it uses carbon and absorbing/neutralizing chemicals. There's 3 on the unit, should give me an hour in a highly contaminated area.
Useful filter life depends on concentration of contaminants in PPM.
There's always a fresh case of filters available after washdown.

Medical Doctor in ER here.

All you guys really need is painkillers and antibiotics.

Everything else should be handled by us.
The amount of instruments I see in BOBs that I'm sure the owner cannot use is astounding.

What you really need is a nurse on your team, and have them stock what they know how to use. It's a technical job. A youtube tutorial unfortunately cannot replace decades of experience.

I for one am more interested in getting to know technical people (mechanics, gun enthusiasts etc) than making a mess trying to do everything myself.

Just so nobody says I'm not being helpful, I'll say that you don't really need to find a vein for administering fluids. Just jab the needle anywhere under the skin, ideally the back, and get the fluids going. It's slower, but it can save your life. You can do more than one if you're concerned.

As for oxygen, why the hell would you want that? If they're sick enough to need oxygen, non-medics will not be able to save their life. Remember that oxygen tanks are used up pretty quickly.

The only protective equipment I recommend is gloves. Masks aren't very helpful. I wouldn't touch an Ebola patient even if I were wearing full protective equipment. Are you really going to wear protective equipment all day?

Oh, no. I'd say the people ITT are genuinely concerned about health when society is stunned by a pandemic. This is understandable, but I'd shift my focus towards making friends who are skilled in areas which I do not have the time to dedicate to learning. In my case that would be people who can fix cars and properly use a gun. In other people's case it would be people who can care for wounds and common infections caused by filth and squalor.

I'd like to see the rise of prepper clubs organizing retreats for groups with this common concern. Regrettably, lone-wolfing is the rule when it comes to civilian disaster preparedness.

From a oh-shit perspective, having O2 available is unlikely to help a person with ebola. Is it worth having for someone in respiratory distress or with significant trauma while waiting on transport? I'll leave that question to you.
