Does anyone else have a favorite tool that (without meaning to) you end up having a mini-collection?

>> No.661519

Folding hardware knife and lighters from camping. I ended up with quite a few of them.

>Folding hardware knife
I never really got the point of those, since regular Stanley/Olfa/whatever knives retract anyways to be safe, so having the form factor of a folding knife just seems like an unnecessary gimmick.

>> No.661551

not a tool..

but tool accesdories

drill bits and driver bits

very easy to buy too many sets

>> No.661555

>>661544
It is. It just makes you feel awesome every time you flip that nice shiny sharp blade out of its wooden confinement to conquer the world. Or maybe cut some small stuff.

>>661555
Nice trips, but why not just a regular old folding knife then? Admittedly, folding knives are more scary to most people and it's harder to fuck up and accidentally cut yourself (like I just did a couple days ago . . . .)

>> No.661560

>>661551

That's a bad one. I always break 1/8th bits (one I use most often when I'm planking) so whenever I see the sets on sale I pick a couple up. End up with a box of new bits I will never get around to using.

I bought a couple of folder knifes for use at work and recently purchased a utility folder (Gerber EAB). I want a super sharp edge on a knife I can beat the fuck out of in a very small form factor. A few nice spyderco knives really hit the mark, but they cost more than I am comfortable spending on a beater tool for hard work.

OP is asking for what tools you like that you inadvertently end up with a bunch of, not just your favorite tool.

>> No.661591

Scalpels.
I carveas a hobby and a razor sharp scalpel is my go to tool.
Then I ended up buying them every time I saw them for different sizes/angles I just didn't need.

Slightly off topic but my Dad compulsively collects 3-phase machinery... He doesn't have 3 phas power, but "one day" he'll have that workshop... He's 65 now.

For me it's wrenches. I love the way a roll organizes wrenches and keep meaning to make a durable one e.g. no plastic. Inevitably the plastic roll will fall apart and I'll start losing them. I finally get frustrated and buy another roll.

I found a great roll maker on etsy but ADD squirrel and procrastination is fun!

Most folding razor knives come with a pocket clip, allowing you keep it on you at all times.

>>661559

A folding razor knife is as sharp as...well, a razor and the replaceable blade means it's always sharp as a razor.

as i read this thread i am sitting in my shed. i have 6 standard sized crescent wrenches hung on the wall that i use regularly. 6 more that range from large to monster that are rarely used. 10 are in a pile rusted shut and useless, i call them hammers. 12 older than dirt wall hangers. and more pipe wrenches than i care to admit (because whats a pipe wrench but a sloppy crescent with teeth)

/DIY/... i think i have a problem

Why not try your hand at leathercraft? A roll (if it is what I'm thinking it is) is stupid easy to make.

Go down to a car pick-n-pull type place and cut the backs off of leather car seats. They usually only charge me about 5 bucks for a 2.5x3 foot chunk

Hit up estate sales. I've found entire shops of tools in fantastic shape. Great for kitchen stuff, camping gear, you name it. Kind of morbid, yeah, but yard sales are generally people dumping shit they don't want anymore. Estates are generally only picked over by relatives and they leave whatever they don't want, which is most of it. I find the kids aren't much interested in grand ma's sewing equipment or grand dad's garage shop.

Segway/continuation of the topic:

Where do most of you get your tools? Buy new or used? Ever just find any tools that you love?

As for mine - top to bottom and left to right
> 8lb sledge - got it as part of my pay for building a set of steps to a porch for a neighbor
>little metal handled angle pein - found rusted to fuck in the bottom of a bucket of scrap metal
> short handle ball pein hammer - found it in a goodwill parking lot
> fuck-if-I-know hammer - flea market find $2
> squared bricker's hammer - given to be by an old friend
> The CLAW! - 13th b-day present from my dad
> 21oz ball pein - under the seat of a scrap yard car
> 4lb Eastwing - bought it at Home Depot
> The Ugly - free box at a yard sale

You have a box of shitty dollar store hammers why?

As for my collection...I don't know. I don't really have an "excessive" collection of anything. I have five electric drills, of various makes...mostly "inherited" from various people over time. A stack of tape measures, because I keep loosing and finding them again.

The only thing I have truly crazy amounts of though are fasteners. Screws, nails, staples, etc...I collect the tail ends of boxes from jobs I do, because clients don't like having half empty boxes of fasteners floating around.

I have enough screws and nails to build a house.

I don't, it's a joke. My buddy is a millwright for Ford and another buddy's dad was a millwright for GM
and we tease them that millwrights only know how to beat on shit with hammers, thus their toolboxes
consist of various sizes of hammers and nothing else.

The Millwrights Mantra:

If it's stuck, hit.
If it's still stuck, hit it harder.
If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

I'm looking to rig my couch with tactile transducers, for that deep bassy feeling that my subs can't output without popping some eardrums. I'm looking at
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ZPTBI/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_VjzVtb1MV70BA
for the transducer and
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0070Z87YO/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_OkzVtb0VPS82D
for the amp. Would this system be scalable to two or possibly three of the transducers for the length of the couch?

i've been obsessed ever since i got into blacksmithing and realizing just how many style of hammers there are and how much sense it makes that every single one is the only one to perform it's job perfectly.

also planers, just because every single one you find seems to have it's own character.
