2. 5 micron filter, sediment filter, and a carbon filter
3. reverse osmosis membrane

so these systems work on city water pressure, so if you can't generate that pressure then you will need a small pump. The water flow needs to be pressurized throughout the whole process.
the filters act to remove any particles that would otherwise damage/clog the RO membrane.
The flow of water should follow inlet at the sediment filter, then flow into the carbon filter (very important to remove chlorine before flow reaches the RO membrane), then to the 5 micron filter. From there the water stream should flow to the RO membrane where there will be a reject stream and a quality stream. The reject stream can be discharged anywhere. This type of system can remove ~95-99% of the impurities including bacteria and viral organisms, radiation and heavy metals. If you are looking to purify salt water you will need a different system design.

probably 15-25 depending on brand

the problem with DIY water filters is once you filter the chlorine out, you could get some bad dudes growing in the other chambers. it's not worth the risk.
