Is dumpster diving allowed where you life?

It's been ok here until recently when retards overdid it and kept on throwing the stuff they grabbed from the containers around so it's officially prohibited now.

Btw, German here. How are things handled at your local "Wertstoffhof"?

This is the laws here in ausfailia as well, but again, people who are that worried will lock their bins, others just don't care.

Same ownership laws apply to curbside rubbish collection. Sometimes people come and rage at me for going through their curbside shit (some are worried that i'll leave a mess, which I don't, but a lot of curb crawlers do), but I simply tell them by placing the items on the curb, they have relinquished ownership of the items to the council. Of course, should they wish to call the council and report theft of their property they are free to do so, my vehicle plates are clearly visible should they wish to make a note. I actually had a dude start hauling loot back onto his property because he was so butthurt, just cane back later for dat looting.

>> No.612571

It's illegal in Scandinavia but the police don't really care.

Some people working at those recycling centers/landfills are really mad about it and some just look away - literally. I often do it in bright daylight so that my actions will be recorded on their security cameras so they can see with their own eyes that I dont steal their property, just garbage.

Once someone spotted me and followed me to my car, threatening me with stuff and whining. He saw the license plates and said that he will report me. It was not my car I was there with that day so I offered him my drivers license so he could check my real info but he didn't accept it, maybe he was just too furious to think clearly.

That's broadly my experience as well. We're talking about those rare kind of people who keep binoculars handy so they can watch whats happening around the street, and who leave passive aggressive letters about shit that's happening inside of other peoples properties.

> Complete fucking nutters

Hell, I got talking to a dude one day who had put a bunch of 70's era computer gear on the curb. Turns out his old man had just passed and he was cleaning out his house. Also, his old man was a HAM. A bit of sympathy and a friendly attitude saw me and my wife being allowed to wander around this guys house to make offers on anything we wanted, furniture, computer gear, test gear, the lot. We filled a ute and trailer for $400 and refurnished half out house with glorious 20's era pieces like pic related. I also picked up some Commodore PET's and a 40's era teletype and ticker tape machine. Fucking top bloke he was. Ended up taking him a case of beer after all was said and done "because clearing out a house is thirsty work".

I live in Vancouver. If you walk through back alleys you'll pass someone going through a dumpster every five minutes or less. It's really strange for me to read about dumpster diving being illegal. I'm so used to it being commonplace that it's like banning bicycles and pizza.

I rarely dive into a dumpster, but if I see something nice lying beside it or sticking out that top I'll take it. About half my furniture came from dumpsters. My best finds are a $200 aluminum bike frame, a commodore 64, and three oscilloscopes.

Supreme court of Canada ruled a while ago (over some pot growing case in Calgary IIRC) that once something goes in your trash, it's not private anymore and anyone can dig through it. The only problems you might run into are trespassing laws if a bin is on private property and the owner wants to be a dick. Lots of people around my area (including me) put useful stuff out beside their garbage with a sign that says "WORKING", "FREE TO GOOD HOME", etc.

Also, out at the family cabin they park a giant dumpster at our end of the beach road twice a year and all the rich people throw out great stuff!

tl;dr dumpster diving is alive and well in Northern Alberta.

Stuff left at doorsteps/end of the road trash can be taken away.
Electronics have their own disposal "trash containers" and they cannot be opened up. All trash then goes to waste filter/selection/whatever center. I dunno, it seems like a fucked if you do/fucked if you dont kind of thing. Unless you need to break a lock or there is specific "no trespassing" signs, it is perfectly legal (and even encouraged, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeganism#Legality_and_Sanitation)) to remove food for consumption.

So, do I risk being sued because someone ate (naturally) tainted food? Or do I get sued because I deliberately poisoned the food, and some poor sod gobbed it without realising?

If I were in the position, I would put a sign on the bin saying "by eating from this skip, you agree to waive your rights to sue due to illness induced from bad produce" or something to that effect. I certainly would not dump bleach over it all. Then again, I likely would not dump edible produce in the skip, I'd call the local homeless shelters and see if they wanted in ("come see me every tuesday and friday when I rotate my stock, and i'll load you up")

You let them eat the possibly spoiled food. Poisoning the food to make it inedible is asking for attempted murder/ manslaughter charges.

Also I've never been to a bakery around here that won't give you the bread at the end of the day if you nicely ask for it. When I was in high school our computer labs got upgraded. All the old computers, monitors and peripherals were thrown out into and stacked around the dumpster behind the school. I asked the Comp Sci teacher if they were just being thrown out or if they were waiting to be picked up, he told me they were just garbage and it had been too much work for him to get that many towers and monitors into the bin when the waste company would pick it all up anyways. I drove my Jeep around to the back of the school (There is a publicly accessible roadway around the school.), loaded up 15 monitors and 15 towers to take home. Didn't bother jumping in the dumpster to grab cables or anything.
I got called to the office the next day and suspended for 2 weeks for stealing school property, they had seen me on the security cameras and recognized me/the vehicle. Recently as of last month shady stuff has been going on at the ewaste place, people working not wearing the green shirt tell me i cant take anything, and copper salvagers paying employes to cut the cord off shit. I know a few people at the place and they said the place sells off anything of seeming value at the beginning of the week and the rest goes to the normal refining center. Shady right? I have a weird suspicion that someone threw a dead aborted fetus into the dumpster at my apartment complex, and I can't be sure. There was a power struggle for a few weeks between rival can/bottle collectors that eventually ended in some sort of investigation by the environmental agency locals and a militant faction of green peace was involved. It's great in Ontario too. I live in a city with a large college and a large university. Students throw out all kinds of perfectly good furniture at the end of a semester. You could easily furnish a small apartment with decent stuff you find on curbs near student housing.

I've heard of kids dumping all kinds of shit from perfectly good chairs/desks/bed frames, to just putting electronics out on the curb (DVD players, game consoles, TV's, laptops, etc.

I've also picked from those computer recycling bins you see in parking lots and such. Got a sweet old Model M that still worked, a four year old Asus desktop I scavenged the LG disk drive and some other misc parts from, and a buddy of mine got a perfectly working 2 year old Macbook out of one, he ended up selling the damn thing for almost a grand.

I stuck a cheap old dvd drive I had kicking around in the Asus and some RAM I traded out of it and sold it to some kid at my high school for $250.

Sold the Model M to another kid at that school for $60

also sold other machines and parts I scavenged from those bins. Working phones, working microwaves, working computers or parts.

I worked at Radio Shack for a while a couple years back. Big mistake, they've all but shot the hobbyist community in favor of smartphones and the corporate culture is noxious from top to bottom.

Anyway, we had a giant box of returned items which were to be thrown away. I asked if I could pick a few out before they got tossed. Obviously not. I resolved to just get the box from the trash when they dumped it the following week. I waited, and when the coast was clear I jumped in and started collecting everything. I get out and the assistant manager is staring at me like I'm insane, doesn't say anything, just turns and goes back inside. The store manager later tells me the only reason I didn't get fired for it was because he'd have to report that the items being discarded hadn't been destroyed first which would come back on him.

I've never been so upset at a concept. Destroying hundred of dollars worth of perfectly good items just because they have no immediate way to monetize them. Christ.

It wasn't even trash yet, they could have shipped it to a warehouse or donated it to the goodwill or sold it online as refurbished items or any number of other things. It was just in a box, everything returned to them is destroyed and discarded.

I've seen worse. The walmart at my uni (and probably others) literally took the rotisserie chickens at 9pm each night and threw them in the trash. I stopped the guy halfway and I'm like shit I'll take one. They made a big deal like "oh we can't do a free transaction with company merchandise" bullshit. Needless to say, the manager was cool, and did a little loophole allowing my roomies and I to pay $0.01 per chicken.

Firstly, pretty sure that story's a fake. Secondly the phrasing anon used there said he found "over $500,000 dollars in german money" not that he'd found german dollars, you idiot.

Although, Germany has used the Euro for a long time now, if it's in Deutschemarks then it's probably no use anymore. If it was in mostly German printed Euros, then anon would have just said Euros.

Ergo, he's either a liar, or his money is worthless. Also, you should learn to read properly.

What I like about this thread is the "fuck everybody but me" attitude of the guys popping in to stir up shit and go on weirdly specific rants accusing people dumpster diving of theft.

Look, dude... (and I say "dude" because we all know it's just one guy with some kind of bizarre 2edgy4u tryhard obsession with being a toughguy shithead) most people itt and probably most people who engage in dumpster diving period are just looking for food. I agree, some probably pretty shitty life choices led them to that level of necessity, but what you're saying is that you'd rather your food waste go to a landfill than to someone who actually probably really needs it at that moment.

I really don't think you're in any kind of position whatsoever to be implying anyone else is a degenerate.

Yeah, this. My old workplace had 9 dumpsters out back. 2 for trash, 2 for cardboard, 1 for iron based metals, 1 for aluminum, 1 for other metals, 1 for plastic, and 1 small one for glass (not bottles, sheet glass). We got paid money by weight for every full dumpster of metal, plastic, glass and cardboard that got collected. We only paid for regular trash pick up and it was generally paid for by the money from recycling with some left over.

If we found people trying to pick from our dumpsters, which happened so often we put locks on them, we called the police. We posted signs and everything, get the fuck out, private dumpsters, they would still come. After we put the locks on them they stopped coming at night. Instead they would show up at 7am right after we pulled the locks off to start the day. Let me tell you, the look on the faces of these indignant hippies, that were baffled by why we were pissed off that they were taking money out of our pockets by raffling threw our *clearly marked* dumpsters, was pretty priceless.

The homeless would generally fuck off if we caught them once but the bioneers (one dude called himself that) would come back every fucking week the day of trash pickup. They wouldn't even ask most of the time, jst hop on up and start chucking stuff into the backs of their trucks or bicycle carts (lol). We must have had one dude picked up 4 or 5 times. He wanted our scrap steel for some welding art shit he did. That asshole just didn't get why we were mad, yet he wouldn't pay for the stuff. Finally we threated to have him jailed for theft if he didn't cut it out and he went away.\

The local freecycle people were the worst. We were on them for months to remove our address from their "good pickings" list of dumpsters and they wouldn't do it until we threatened to sue. We're a California company so we're all about saving the planet and shit but some of these wingnuts go to far and are almost militant about it.

We do steel fabrication and occasionally aluminum. Signs locks and chains they would break past them all. Aluminum is about $0.50 per lb we tracked one of them down from his license plate and had him arrested for trespassing, destruction of property (bolt cutter on chains) and theft. Had happened a few times before we chained it up and got the camera. People still come by and pick at it but no one has cut the chains or locks again. I don't think he went to jail, we got a restitution check which we did not deposit.

I do feel sorry for the bastards but seem to feel entitled to our scrap and we feel otherwise.

In most of the US, you give up your claim to own stuff when you put it out for trash collection, and as long as someone doesn't have to break a lock / trespass / etc. they're free to take the things you've thrown away.

In my City (Germany), it is common to put stuff that other people could like in front of you house with a note "free to take home" if you think it is too good for trash but have no use for it anymore.

I find this really cool, did not have this where I used to live before.

I have taken home an old and beaten leather school bag (used the leather to stitch a new medieval style leather bag) some time ago. I did likewise with a CPU cooler I had no use for anymore.

Sometimes you can even get some perfectly good furniture for free this wayor a fridge or freezer.
