And you'll need a source of metals; an iron mine will do if you're going old-school, but for a self-sufficient semi-modern (1800s+) lifestyle, look into producing aluminum and copper as well. Power? Out of the question, unless you're willing to cheat and buy PV cells or a hydro turbine and some concrete, but even then you'll have to make your own lightbulbs and fixtures, oh and you'll never have a computer with which to browse 4chin. Make sure you have plenty of land to hunt on, and you'll want a good source of tannins, the type of tree you're looking for will vary by region. You'll need enough land for sheep, rabbits, chickens, and whatever meat crops you want to raise. You probably won't be able to make a gun, bullets, and powder, so you'll need a bow. Bowstrings can be made from guts, but you'll have to devise some clamping mechanisms to hold your bow bent while the glue (owaitno) dries. You're going to need enough people to fend off wolves, help with harvest, and so on, so I suggest you either recruit the homeless or start populating. Eventually, you could perhaps give each member of the commune a job, meaning that the declared bowyer will learn to make better bows than anyone else, while the declared blacksmith will make the best tools. You could even start trading amongst yourselves, exchanging your goods and services for those of others. Hey, there's an idea, but I suppose that wouldn't exactly be self-sufficiency, would it?

You can't you just get stronger and more independent that others.
You get weaker at the same time by alienating your self from the people you used to depend on.

>> No.616150

What do you mean by "completely self-sufficient"?
I suppose you could try to go full hunter gatherer and try to live off the land
or subsistence farming but for that you would need land that you won't get kicked off of.

You really can't. If you own property anywhere you have to pay property tax, and depending where it is you may have to pay for water, sewer, trash removal service, and what-not, so you'll still have to have money. The only other alternative is to live on public land (if in the U.S.), but the caveat to that is you can't build any structure on public land that has more than 3 walls (in other words, you're living outdoors). This is all assuming you never need a doctor or hospital and are willing to live with no modern conveniences whatsoever. Personally I also think that even if you did that, you're inviting constant attention from local law enforcement, because they're going to be immediately convinced that you're up to no good if not already running from the law.

well this is essentially the problem with independence. by abandoning society you're abandoning the protection of your fellow citizens and leaving yourself open to the roving warbands of the wilderness.(ie. police or criminal scum both play the same game)

Well if he's worried about the attention he could just keep his self sufficiency secret. I'm sure that even when he does get caught he'd still have gained the knowledge and experience to do it again. Self sufficiency is a skill in itself.

Ignore these media-fed, brainwashed statists, OP. What you're looking to achieve is totally possible. Firstly, look up the differences between law of the land and law of the sea. I mean become a fucking EXPERT. You'll need to to avoid prosecution by whichever greedy government you reside under. Secondly, buy a tent, a camper van or a narrowboat, depending on the level of self sufficiency you're looking to achieve. Thirdly, buy a decent knife and a bow (or craft them yourself), and invest in a decent book about bushcraft. I lived on a canal boat for five years and grew/hunted my own food. I also built things out of wood and traded these and food with others and did not earn or spend a penny in all that time. I was bothered by the law at first but once I made it clear that I wasn't playing their game and that I knew not to give them jurisdiction over me, they left me alone. Like I said, become an EXPERT on the differences between common law and statute law, and the fact that one of these does not automatically apply to you. Watch a documentary called Our System, Our Structure, Our Illusion to get you started and then look into it. Look DEEP into it.

After the five years on the boat I gave it to a friend of mine and lived first in a tent in a wooded area, then in a shelter which I built myself over the course of two months. I lived in it for a further three years very comfortably. I'm currently staying with my father as he recently had an operation and needs a helping hand, but in a month I'll be back out there living as a free man. You can do the same. All you have to do is want it enough to do it.

Cue the media-monkeys exercising their moral conditioning and blindly telling me that everything I've said above is wrong. (People like you make me glad that I live amongst nature and not in your concrete zoo.)

Even if it's not... I'm saving this for using as pasta.

>> No.617976

>You probably won't be able to make a gun, bullets, and powder,

harharhar. This isn't /b/ take your trolling elsewhere. Buy a gun and reloading equipment. Save your shells. cast the bullets from scrounged tire weights. Make black powder. Most guns will shoot the black powder but require more cleaning. You can trade your farmfresh eggs for primers and sulfur. Then piss down the barrel for cleaner and oil it with machine or motor oil.

You'll need 5 acres for staple crops like wheat or corn, then 1 acre for veggies/greenhouse and a stock pond or aquaponics and chickens. Feed the chickens off the staple crops then use the poop as fertilizer for vegetables or duckweed.

Make sure it's legal to install a septic tank with leech field, then do that. Don't put it where the tank will float up in floods, design a natural gas collector and filter for the tank then use a repurposed compressor to compress it into propane tanks for fuel.

Next dig a well for water and build a high DBI antenna to collect free WIFI for internets. You may need to attach the antenna to a car. retrofit a generator to run on propane and feed it your poo gas. Find a car that runs on a carb. and do the same to that or horse and buggy. Now either build or buy a windmill generator. Build a giant battery by casting your scavenged wheel weights and trading for $ for battery acid. Either build a cabin or buy an RV, Buying doesn't matter until you declare yourself self sufficient after that you will need to produce something for $ to buy things.

>> No.617981

Declare yourself Amish and get it legitimized that you don't pay social security or medicare taxes. Get a chainsaw and tools for woodworking mechanics, a welder torch and black-smithing. Don't pay Federal Income Tax on any income that isn't leaving a paper trail. If you own enough wal-mart stock etc. it will pay you enough dividends to pay land taxes with, Or send an extra cow to slaughter/make some knifes/do some woodworking or carpentry etc.

Get a pair of hair clippers. The instructions tell you how to do a buzz cut and it's obvious to trim a beard.. Learn brewing, cheese making, soap making,Sewing, medical and dental.

At this point you should have enough skills and products to offer and so low overhead you`ll be able to barter/fix/dumpster dive or build for whatever else you need or would like.

Back in the 1930s the US government published a book called "Five Acres and Independence". It's been through a couple updates since and you can probably find it online somewhere.

The book discusses farming and small animal husbandry, first for your own food and eventually for "truck farm" type sales. You get all sorts of diagrams for hen houses, root cellars, hutches, irrigation/drainage, sties, greenhouses, tool/animal sheds, etc. It assumes you'll have some electricity, a working well, access to a road, and living quarters. You can find other books that will cover those topics, especially the "off grid" stuff.

The upshot is you can, if you're willing to work rather hard, feed yourself, your family, and earn some, on "only" fives acres of working land.

Depends upon your needs, bro. All man really needs is food, water and shelter. If you expect to have things like a car or computer it gets much more complicated.

If you want to live for free in the middle of nowhere, find a place that may not be developed within your lifetime... middle of alaska maybe?

IF YOU WANT POWER you want a diesel generator. my father lives off grid and taught me how to do it my whole life. I will continue this modern Amish way of living my whole life as well. Its fucking awesome.
>buy diesel generator according to what power output you want. Go into town occasionally with truck, four wheeler, or whatever and pick up as much waste vegetable oil as possible. look up how to filter and clean it before putting it in your generator. look the shit up so i dont have to explain it all on here.
completely off grid is cool, but transportation like a four wheeler and snowmobile, internet, and phone are great luxuries even out in BFE.

you can't. it's against the law. you will have find a place where you don't have property taxes, mineral and water rights to the land, can grow enough food to support your family, generate fuel to cook and heat. Then never work again. Never ever sell anything. Also you'll need to be some place that wont' require you to be connected to the power grid, sewer, water utility.

Then there is still a chance a government will come by and find some code, reg, law to screw you with.

Find a nice cave and spend all your time hunting food with sticks you found and sharpened against rocks you found and praying to the sun that you don't get an infected wound or illness.

If you're building with stock materials and purchased tools, you're not completely self-sufficient. If you're eating food or drinking water you didn't collect yourself, you're not completely self-sufficient. If you expect to live very long and procreate you can't be completely self-sufficient.

The idea of being completely self-sufficient is completely antiquated and backwards and ignorant.

>> No.623199

Theoretically, living completely independent of society is possible, however you would be forced to keep it low-tech for the most part. Even simple stuff like clean water, waste removal and electricity require a lot of work. Sure, you could bury your shit and get water from a stream, but you'd have to do this every day for a long time. What happens when your shit pile gets so full you can't stand the smell?

Self Sufficient- No external inputs
Self Sustaining- Neutral or positive balance of trade.

If you have a shit job and no debt living in the city, you are self sustaining. You need to define an acceptable balance of trade for yourself before going back to the land.

To be truly self sufficient, you'll live a stone age lifestyle all by yourself. People do it, but it doesn't sound much fun.
