One of the major issues that's often ignored in scenarios like this is housing and feeding workers.

If it were up to me, part of the 500k would go to buying 7-8 shed kits, which would be set up, insulated, and used to house the workers/residents. Another part of the 500k would go to buying staple food items in bulk, like rice, pasta, and potatoes. Workers would provide for their own power by way of solar panels. Water could be had by trucking it in, drilling a well, or possibly collecting rainwater. I'm not sure how to handle heating, though... the meat of the construction would have to be taken care of in the spring and autumn, I believe.

Not sure how moving to rural Colorado will accomplish anything, but I'm sure it will, once we get settled and we have a fleet of DIY robots to grow organic crops for us and our own telecom cooperative to handle internet and cellular services.

I'd make a foundation dedicated to teaching people the methods, techniques and skills for living independently off the grid. Kind of like Boy Scouts for adults. Ideally not everyone is going to live off the grid, but teaching these things will inform people and give them the option to do so later in life.

I think a LOT of people want to get away from the Incorporated America lifestyle that people are forced to live but don't know how else to live. Many people have dreams of living independently this way but don't know how. Others are curious or maybe just think it's a good way to save on living expenses. Either way I think there is a very large need for some sort of group that teaches,in a hands on manner, exactly how do to do this.

An organization like this could learn how to do something hands on by doing it, and then give back to the community by donating the fruits of their labor. For example they could teach people how to build a tiny home by actually building one as a group (like >>610046) and then donating the tiny home to people in need. Teach how to build a hydroponics system, then donate the food to soup kitchens. People would earn badges or awards like in boy scouts for doing this. Not only as proof of what you've learned (as is with boyscouts), but more importantly as proof and a reminder to oneself of the projects they've participated in have helped the community.

For the moment, this is hypothetical.

In terms of human resources selection: You can select 15 individuals from any board (or website) you desire. Because of a sophisticated screening and interview process whoever you select will end up being above average in terms of skill.

Sure, you can choose people who browse multiple boards. For the sake of this exercise, the more boards an individual browses, the more their skill level in each drops. has it right... the earthship concept is great. The main problem is that it's not a "one size fits all" type of design. You must use what is available in the environment (the 50 acres). Building must be able to withstand yearly temperature swings plus storm, flood & earthquake threats.

I'd set up a huge aquaponics farm growing tilapia and all sorts of fruits and vegetables. To make sure we always had the water to keep this system going, most of it would be inside something like a stilltent from Dune. Also what little rainwater was caught would be utilized fully.
There'd be other farms too, growing rabbits and chickens that'd be fed off of the grain and veggie scraps from the aquaponics system.
We'd eat mostly what we grew, and sell or store the surplus. With the money from selling our organic, locally grown produce (hipsters love that shit) we pay land taxes and put most in a trust for our progeny to go to college.
We'd be living in a combination of earthships, hobbit-holes, and hovels, each man to his own.

>> No.622176

The point of getting a good paying job is that you can hire other people to get their hands dirty while you enjoy the results. Unless you enjoy this kind of shit. In which case you get a job doing this shit for other people so you can do what you love doing while getting paid big money for it. The deal is that you have to do it on a large enough scale as so really make money at it.

What you are talking about, making just enough produce to pay the bills with a little left over, is subsistence farming. Subsistence farming is shit. You are one or two bad years away from being broke, landless and in debt to Uncle Sam. If you think you wont suffer the same problems that normal farmers do, like pestilence or disease, you're delusional. Double that for organic operations. Why do you think that shit is so expensive? Because their costs go up from all those chemicals they aren't buying? Nah, its 'cause their output is shit.

Their crops are smaller, take longer to grow and outright fail more often. What do you thick an organic farmer does if their grains develop mold or their chickens get sick? If he wants to stay organic, which costs A LOT of money to get certified for, they kill the chicks or plow the field under and hope it doesn't happen again next year.

On top of that, what are you gonna do to pay the bills (other than "land", which I guess you think is your only expense)? It costs tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to setup a self sustaining system like that. Even a small one. How are you gonna pay for power? Insurance? Fuel? You're clothes, home, vehicle and medical? What about extra labor for when harvest comes? It takes decades for farming startups to pay off their initial investments. If you are lucky your kid's kids will be the ones befitting from your college fund.

I wouldn't do large size crops. i'd do small ones but with enough of them to feed everyone +leftover - check this video where a family uses 1/10th of an acre to produce 6,000 lbs of food, about 80% of their diet is grown on that land.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCmTJkZy0rM

Grow as much of a variety as possible.
With all the small growing crop plots you can switch them up season to season with animals etc. This means the lands constantly fertile.

I'd keep bees, make a brewery, i'd be into smithin so i'd have a smelter etc I'd pretty much do everything, i'd produce as much as possible in as small a space as possible.
All of this produce can be sold at a slightly higher than average price as it's all fresh and pure, all the hipsters go crazy for all that shit, especially if it's packaged nicely etc.

I'd say about 60% of the land would just be used as natural landscape to wander and enjoy.

oh it might be worth looking into farming fish too -

Buy greenhouses, start up solar heated aquaponics growing tropical fruits for local markets. Pawpaw, Orange, Kumquat.

Durng the winter we can set up hot compost piles to heat the pipes for the water, in turn warming the plants.

I suggest Cherax Destructor, alongside some aquarium animals for sale.
Small neocardina shrimp of rare varieties could be lucrative, as could raising koi, each could provide a different sort of system.

The Cherax can breed exclusively in freshwater, grow over a foot long, taste like lobster, and lay hundreds of eggs per year.
They are also highly tolerant of others, when provided with enough hiding spaces. We can keep em in kiddy pools.

http://youtu.be/IimS5ccV0eM

The outside I'd encourage chickens in a food forest type setup. I'd explain in better in person.

We'd keep several goats, and a few alpacas.
The goats would be for meat mostly, but also milk if we get effective milkers. If the other guys are pussies I can slaughter and butcher.

The feathers, bones and other waste would feed dermestid beetles, our chickens would be supported with insect farms fed with our garden waste, alongside worms, and duckweed that we'd buy more kiddy pools for in summer. Duckweed proliferates really quickly and it can replace a third of their traditional feed with no ill effects on size or egglaying. We'd sell eggs, and cheese, and jerky to "Friends" who won't rat us out to the FDA.
We'd sell crafts to the pagan community, black animals to the vodoo folks.
I study things for fun, so I am well versed in herbal remedies. (I don't mean just weed) So I can help the livestock with many illnesses that they can contract. I can deworm them without antibiotics, and I can safely sedate them for castration.(We're all guys, we'd all want to be asleep for that)
I'm an /an/t at heart.

I'd raise pigs on a couple of acres, and they'd be allowed to eat the fruits and nuts that fall from the native fruit forest. We'd feed them whey from our cheesemaking, and insects. We'd grow another sort of duckweed to feed them, one with more fat.

We'd render their lard to make traditional candles and soaps. The soaps being more catered to the masculine side that's always ignored these days. We'll make soaps that smell like nuts and seeds, like campfires, and the sea, like spicy nose tickling scents that are actually natural. Incenses that cover weed smell naturally and sustainably would be actually considered if they fooled the police smell-o-trons.

We would grow sunflowers for the pigs, as they love them. We'd grow strong oaks for acorns, because acorn flours are a gluten-free commodites are growing. We'd grow hopniss because of it's substantial protein content and lack of care requirements. Once we're old we'll have a food forest for all our needs.

The building materials for my shown above-ground hydro building ALONE is now over $200,000 in one of the cheapest places in the country. That's not including anything hydro related, plumbing and etc.

And I am DIY this entire thing, sir. I do this for a living and I know you aren't going to be able to do it under a quarter million. The rental on heavy excavator equipment ALONE will almost break your bank with the insurance requirements.

>> No.629981

>>629914
I can build the motor myself, that wont be much.

if you spent 200,000 on materials you went over on your battery bank, are doing some serious water redirection, or are using electrolysis on excess electricity and have a dangerous hydrogen reserve.

I'm just building a big motor and putting a turbine downstream. I don't need huge efficiencies or complex hydro-ops, I just need enough for lights, some basic appliances, and misc electronics. HVAC costs will be extremely low due to being under ground.

Also excavator costs aren't that much. I'd dig 30 feet deep, 15 x 15, 3 levels (8ft each), excess dirt would cover the bunker.

also at 12 foot deep I'd bury two 20 ft long pipes that are 7' in diameter for the hydro.

what would cost me the most are the things I cannot do myself like drilling ~100ft holes to tap wells.

The insurance on the rental ALONE is a hundred grand, pal. Typical Daily costs are $10,000.

>HVAC costs will be extremely low due to being under ground.

Not really, once you take into consideration you're going to need to vent any excess heat you generate. And you really don't understand just how much it's going to take to grow your own food. in the space of a small house (120sqft) you're going to need at least 15kWh. Even with LEDs, that's a ton of heat.

You didn't do your research on this, that much is certain.

First off, splitting 240 isn't easy for n00bs so the bare wire nerves are understandable.

Now, for the other update:

Cleaned the hell up inside, besides needing to tape off the radiant barrier joints, the entire grow area except the air mix/return section is buttoned up tighter than virgin pussy. Had to jack up the seedling/processing/work room beam and add a 4x4 wood pillar to make the roof flat (huge 7-inch bow due to a two inch miscalculation. Thankfully we had a 12-ton jack!) But that sucker is ready for rubber flooring and ready for hydro/plumbing install, unless the owner decides to wrap the inside with inside-out Tyvek for white reflectivity versus the oil reflectivity. In reality, neither makes that much of a difference for our system and lighting choice.

$200k just seems too excessive.

Generally my city is expensive as fuck, we dont have Mexicans, but you can build all kinds of fully finished 4x2 houses for $200k.

Well guys, it's been fun showing you stuff. I'm heading back home for a couple of weeks, then I'm probably coming back to finish off the lighting when it comes in, and I should have a BOM on stuff.

The LED lighting alone is going to be about $30K, depending on the manufacturer we go with. Maybe cheaper if I end up having to build them myself in case the samples we've ordered turn out to be garbage (protip: Philips Greenpower LED bars are crap. Advertise 40w, only 30w. Advertise 120 degree viewing angle, only 105 degrees.)

I know that much. What I mean is how did they get it to be flat? It's looks as if they covered the walls with plastic wrap, put that insulation spray then removed the plastic wrap after it settled.

When one is out in the middle of nowhere, Texas, things get pricey. Very likely so for those wanting to build out in nowhere, Colorado (which is where one would get 50 acres of land.)

>>637526

It's isocyanate and polyol resin mixed and sprayed. And yes, it does a much better job of that itchy fiberglass stuff.

The current rating on the walls is (with the radiant barrier) R44-45 and ceiling (with the added Perma-R and spacing) is around R60-65. Yea, it's just as good.

I saw mention of UV/IR light emission of plants as a way of differentiating plants that are healthy and a certain color, or have some sort of deficiency. Guy i was in scouts with who is now an Ag dude was talking about a drone that could scan fields and spray based on these readings, never really looked too deep into it.
