anyone have any idea what this is? the project box has a 12 position switch 3 of which are wired as pictured. they are marked on the box as "E - dot - F" what was its function?

I looks like a crude water sprinkler timer.

It could literally be anything. The wire coming into the project box is connected to a rotary switch. It looks like they've chosen to have three different outputs based on switch position. Frankly it's one of the worst things projects I've ever seen, no grommets for the wires, nothing to hold the wire from ripping off the switch in case it gets tugged, ugly ass soldering, no shrink wrap or anything, the wire coming in is like 10 gauge but if it ever needed that much amperage the resistor leads would just disintegrate and it looks like the leads are touching on some of the resistors. Way too big a controller for something so simple.

Someone's quick hack, purpose unknown. The switch selects one of the 3 resistors or opens the circuit, depending on position.
It could be an attenuator, load or maybe some quick check instrument. Or countless of other things.

Could be reading the position of the switch using an ADC.

How about posting a picture of the entire box so we can see what we're looking at?

hahhahah you dont have any input worth considering anyway. dont waste my time asking me to post a picture of a box. (retard)

Well, you just lost yourself exactly the help you needed, jerk.

Stick around bro. Not all of us are idiots like OP has been, is, and will be until the end of times.

damn calm down guys that wasnt even me just some asshole hijacking the thread

I dont really appreciate the criticism of build quality. I did not make this. it was obviously a quick and dirty job. moreover its not constructive.

anyways thanks for the input. I know that its a switch, not some sort of sensor like someone was saying. I know there are 3 resistors. I think theyre 10 47 and 100 ohm. the question I was asking was if anyone could posit some hypothetical use for the damn thing, and whether the E and F markings could help figure that out.

Okay, taking a look at this, this is probably a cheap attempt at a dimmer circuit for low-power lighting, probably LED.

Which would have failed, as most LEDs have their own internal driver.

Potential uses:

Actual LED controller for raw DC (upgrade the diodes to much larger ones and heatsink them if you can)

CPU fan speed controller

Regular switch for lower-voltage devices (those tiny contacts aren't meant for 120V wall power.)

>> No.615541

I'll tell you exactly what it is. It is a two port device that lets you select between 100, 47 and 5.1 ohms resistance.

>> No.615560

I would guess, based on the markings:

Controller for something that needs a variable output when it is E(mpty), F(ull), or in-between

it's a resistor selector

My criticism was perfectly constructive. I basically said use a grommet, tie a knot or epoxy the wires once they're inside the box so they can't be tugged, clean up the soldering and use electrical tape or shrink wrap, particularly around the resistors. I also suggested the wire is too big to make sense and the project as a whole could reproduced to a scale the size of a quarter. But you said you didn't make it so I guess that's only helpful if you ever did wanna make one.
>>615510
My new idea is, based on the fact there's a E/L & F like >>615560 pointed out, and judging by the knock off GReddy blow off valve in the back ground and the fact you're in some kind of shop, is it was used as a sleepy eye controller for flip up headlights. Either that or some kind of home made diagnostic equipment, maybe for a fuel gauge or something.
