/diy/nosaurs, help!

My father has recently asked me to help him build a boat, a 50-footer. He used to build them and sell them, and he used to be a fisherman and crabber, too. He's getting on in his years and he wants to pass on his knowledge.

Problem is I have never built a boat before.

I don't want to walk into this completely clueless. Any help, tips, or stories would really be appreciated.

Is he also asking you to bring a breeding pair of every animal on earth?

Most people can't just build a boat. Your father knows this, that's why he's teaching you. I'm sure he expects you to be clueless. Brush up on nautical terminology, and basic woodworking. Might be a good idea to research basic woodworking tools also. Good luck, this could be a very memorable project for you two.

Ha. No.

>>614600

Sure, I know he's expecting me to be clueless. But, this is how I am. I like to learn a little ahead of time.

Thanks for the encouragement, though.

>Nautical Terminology
>Basic Woodworking

Will do.

The open part goes at the top

The bottom part should be sort of round but also pointy

Waterproof, that's generally good

Honestly it's a pretty specific trade, you should just let your dad tell you what he knows.

Read up about masts and rigging, some of the things you read will make you laugh, this is my promise.

I know that the keel of a ship is its soul, and if it is damaged it can never be repaired and the ship is approaching the end of its life. To make the best keel you should find the rarest, oldest, hardest and most expensive tree in the world. Spare no Belis in acquiring one of those trees.

Be careful, if you put too many cannons on your boat, someone might use your boats for nefarious purposes and you have to live with it. But hey, if you want to kill sea monsters, you don't have much other choices do you.

In closing, my advice would be to do it with a "DON!"

The waterproof part of wood boats cones from the fact that they absorb water and the wood expands and creates a tight seal.

Basically this. Don't be that fucking know-it-all kid that comes in and shits on his ways because "accoring to MLP1234eva online that's an ineffecient way of doing it. This is better".

I teach a basic woodworking class on the weekends to 18+. Never fails I get either a know-it-all who read some books or someone who has been doing woodworking for years. To the first fuck you, I've been doing this for a long time, I know what I'm doing plus I don't teach advanced techniques because I'm more concerned about the 55 year old woman cutting off her hand with the RAS. To the second, why are you taking a class meant for people with zero experience with wood working.

Just listen. Regardless of what you learn on an online forum, everyone has their own way of doing things and if your father wants you to learn his way, then learn it his way, no bs

no serious answers because steel hull has nothing to do with stitch n glue or fiberglass.

The funniest stories are the guys who build upside down as traditional, and then screw up flipping it over.

No, it's just that seals are relatively small mammals and can't really take human-sized schlongs.

Some wooden boat builders use nasty chemicals, so be aware of any chemicals you use and take full precautions.

Wooden Boat Forum is a good place. check out some books, but keep an open mind, everyone has a different way of doing things, so while you may have learnt to do it this way, it can easily be done that way. if your dad is teaching you, it can easily be that the way he knows it is different.
