$2,000 my ass.

I've been watching some engraving videos lately and I'm entirely interested.
But $2k for a mini jack hammer hooked to a mini air compressor seems a little far-fetched to say the least.

Anyone care to help me build one?

Here's the site/specs: http://www.grstools.com/engraving-systems/004-965.html

Here it is in use:

forgot to add that that price is without any handpieces..

Specialized tool for a limited market equals high price.

seems like it's not so much a "specialized" tool so much as it is rebranded to appear that way.

even still, i guarantee it could be built for a fraction of the price.

I... what would this be used for outside of engraving? Also, it says you connect it to a compressed air source.

I don't know anything about engraving systems, but I'm guessing this is mostly a system for regulating the air in a precise manner. It could likely be made for less, but without knowing what it's supposed to do I have no idea.

> Rebranded to appear as a specialised tool.
> Implying branding has anything to do with the purpose of the tool.

I'll just forget that I have no idea what you're trying to say here and explain supply economics to you.

> I tool up to make a device.
> I price it to include everything from cost of materials to electricity required for the factory.
> The more units I can sell, the cheaper I can sell them for as the cost of manufacture is spread across more units.
> The less units I can sell, the more production will cost.
> If I do not anticipate selling many units as I am making niche/specialised equipment, I need to bump the price up again to cover unforseen costs like demand drying up, or repair of broken build equipment.

TL;DR, Quit your fucking bitching. You are doing this on a whim, in 6 months time you will likely have moved onto the next thing your fickle mind has latched onto, and will be whinging about the cost of 3D printing/media blasting/whatever the hell you're looking at. What you consider excessive, people who know what they need and are looking to make a long term commitment to a an industry consider a bargain.

wtf...replied to your post and don't see it on here.....??

anyway, you're exactly right in the sense that it needs an external air supply and redistributes the air accordingly. but tattoo machinnes do almost the exact same thing..some with air, most without.
sonic cleaners use a similar motor.

my question is more pertaining to the build in an electronic sense...that is - how would one go about building a motor to give those same specifications while accepting an outside air supply?

i'm perfectly fine buying the hand tools themselves because those are obviously extremely exclusive to the craft...it's the motor i'm concerned about.

have one. unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to get completely clean, detailed cuts. even with the diamond tip.

not him but can i ask why? is the speed not constant enough, or is it weight/size make it awkward to use?

I had a dremel, laughed when people told me they didn't have a long lifespan.

Wasn't laughing when it broke.

not the machine so much as the actual cut itself.

the diamond tip cuts in a manner that makes the inside of each individual cut of engravings have a weird 'lapping' type of texture....hard to explain.

aside from engraving, the dremel is still definitely a staple in my shop. especially once you get the additional detailing hose attachment for it.

my "dremel" is actually the Craftsman model. made by Dremel.

not sure what's different between the two, but my Dremel was literally the first tool I ever bought and it's still lasted me to this day.
Got it on clearance for $30 lol.

I have a dremel 385 from the late 80's that apart from a touchy "2" speed setting, is still going strong. Some people just don't know how to use a tool within parameters, then get surprised when they fail. I am not one of those people.

What about...

Generic Chinese pneumatic tattoo gun
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-In-1-Tattoo-Kit-Neuma-Style-Pneumatic-Rotary-Tattoo-Machine-Gun-U-Pick-Color-/261325149263?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Tattoos_BodyArt_SM&var=&hash=item3cd831544f

And a diamond tipped engraving stylus

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dremel-Diamond-Engraver-Tip-Point-for-290-Tool-9929-/310128328140?pt=UK_Baby_BabyFeedingUtensils_EH&hash=item483516bdcc

Grind the stylus a bit thinner, braze / solder it onto a tattoo needle thing and you've got something I imagine to be functionally very similar.
