No man, glad you did. Well, it started in 2008 when A couple of friend and I played a game called "Catch me" ( I have 21 years now ) and while I was running I had to jump a metal fence, but instead of just jumping I used my right hand to help me do it, on the ground there were little stones so I would slip. Then the fence was in a strange reversed " V " shape and I got my finger stuck between the two metals and while i was running it just ... ripped off. I was very skinny and was running as fast as I could applying force as well, and that's how it happened. Kinda sick and probably phony but, that's how it happend. I'll never have enough money to repair my finger so I'm trying to make one myself with the help of you guys ofc. A friend told me about this board :). thx for listening guys.

a bit of critique here, increase the wall thickness around the pin holes. Make the hole size slightly smaller than the pin you want to use where you want to keep the pin in place, increase hole size where you want it to move.

Now, if you are going to 3d print it with shape ways, use material only where you need it. Please do realize that with 3d printing complexity is free. Shapeways charges $$$ for material usage, so do whatever you can to keep costs down.

Also found a good procedure describing the detergent and process used for complete decellularization and sterilization that is used on tendons so it should work easily on bladers.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3664617/

The main ingredient is 2% sodium lauryl sulfate also called Sodium dodecyl sulfate and buffered with one molar concentration of Tris HCl. It was sterilized with ethanol.

The main procedure is rinse with ethanol apply detergent freeze and thaw repeat a few times.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/64151632/

Ethanol is called everclear and is available at your liquor store.

ECM differs slightly when collected from different parts but blader ecm is very neutral and has a good match with just about everything, the only real exception is hearts are typically injected with ecm that came from hearts.

I'm thinking that material like OPs pic would be better. Some kind of semi rigid plastic or maybe a combination of plastic and leather using the measurements and pivot points from your working design.
Though it sounded silly at the time, I wonder if material salvaged from a flexible doll would work as an anon suggested earlier.

Would you post some dimensions of the working points from your model when it's strait? A strait on side view with the finger strait would be fine too.

This has the potential to help lots of people. Open source prosthetic, brought to you by /diy/. Imagine if anyone with basic mechanical skills could make one of these from materials from walmart for $50 or less.

It's about 2.75" long fully extended an an inch wide. Should weigh .02 pounds once printed and have a printed volume of .6 cubic inches.
Costs $16 if you choose to get it from shapeways, or some change if you print it yourself.

I feel like it needs a name. Also taking last few suggestions.

Something seems off with the leverage and range. I think the motion is over amplified.

Looking at my own finger, the first knuckle has a full 90 degrees range. OPs second pic here >>594509 confirms this (~85deg)
The second joint roughly follows the first with slightly less bend.

On that model, the second joint angle seems about double the first. When the first joint is ~22.5deg, the second is at ~45 deg.
This would also mean more force would be required.
It should match the other fingers.

At best this guy was an idiot, and it was possibly a scam (though I'm not sure if he tried to sell his miracle cure). There aren't really many clear photos of the finger before it supposedly regrew, but from what there is you can see that he only lost a very small part of the tip. The part where the nail matrix lies was still present, and presumably the nail simply got torn out, making him think he'd lost it entirely. He might have lost a small amount of bone, but I find it unlikely that the prop on an RC airplane would have cut through it. More likely it chipped an insubstantial amount off the end. And even if he did, he probably didn't need to regrow it to regain function of his finger.

OP, don't try this. You'd have to cut open the end of the residual finger, removing the flap of skin that was originally used to close it, and ensuring that you'll lose even more when this magical powder fails.

>>594888
>>594927
This anon is right.
I think you need to make the back part shorter, bringing the top pivot point closer to the hand. That should make the distal joint bend less. Or I might be wrong. Visualizing this without actually testing is difficult.

When you bend your finger, muscles in the forearm are contracting and act like a pulley system:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexor_digitorum_profundus_muscle

In theory, if you could attach onto the tendons, you could replace the function. Your tendon will have been chopped but if you could attach a material onto the remaining part you could complete the 'pulley' system again.

You could use a spring so that when tension is no longer applied to the artificial tendon, it returns to a straightened position.

If you cut into the underside of your finger, the tendon will look like a thin glistening band. Staple it or something to the band that you will attach to your robot finger.

>> No.595068

>>595062
This is a good idea, except that it requires having a permanent hole in your finger where the tendon or its replacement comes out. There do exist implants that anchor to bone and pass through the skin, used for securing prostheses, but infection is a problem.

It's also conceivable to expand the skin of the finger and implant replacement bones, to which the tendons could be attached. Joint replacements are sometimes performed in the fingers (I'll spare you the images), so there's no reason it's not possible.

Neither solution is an appropriate DIY project, obviously.

You are correct about the over amplification problem it's just something that's hard to fix using a linkage. In the video the guy used a flexible coupler to pull the finger back so he wouldn't have this issue. See my problem is I need another linkage to give it the proper range but once I do that it becomes unconstrained, so it isn't an option. I'm going to experiment with different hinge designs and see if one works but it'll be a thing that will take a while and some thought. I the meantime I plan on having this up in a few hours or so.

>>595062
>>595068
I've been wondering about this for some time. If there was some way you could get an attachment to the tendons themselves that would be the way to go. The majority of the actuators for your hand are indeed in the forearm so you could potentially get the whole hand lobbed off and make a decent replacement if you had that access.

I've been working on a hand for a android project that works on the same principles as the human hand. I suppose it could be easily used for the above purpose.

>> No.595150

You should be able to figure it out from this video

1) Watch the entire thing so you know how the finger moves
2) Look at how its attached to his finger at this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=A-sxvAuvO9I#t=49

if you're wondering what materials, id suggest you use coat hanger wire+lead free solder(to get the design right), then upgrade to plastic

Thank you man, can't wait to see it work as well. I will post the prototype tomorrow on what I've done so far, based on what you've done in that gif.

Several years ago I sculpted a hand with jointed fingers. I used roller chain links. In picrelated they're covered in wax, which was later cast in aluminum. I don't have any photos of that unfortunately.

I don't know if this helps, but you can pick up these links at a hardware store. You'd only need one, and some sort of socket for your finger, for example a piece of PVC pipe or, or melted plastic. You could just drill a hole through it and link the piece of chain to the front to create the joint. Then if you attach two cords (one for the top and one for the bottom to the front of the end joint and thread it through to the other side, of the joint (crossing over), you can anchor that to the first segment (say with a ring), and get the same effect.

I probably explained that badly, but maybe it gives you an idea if you still want to DIY something simple while you wait for your 3D printed finger.

Solidworks 2013 64 bit, it includes a full simulation suite and you can get a free copy as a student.

>>595039
You gave me some odd measurements but I made them work. Your total finger length was less than that of the two phalanges put together.

If you get this printed from shapeways with shipping it should be around $25
Also, get something like this to coat the distal phalange
>www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip
You'll also need some superglue or acetone to fasten the ends of the pins in place. I'd also suggest putting on fake nails at the bed of the finger as it'd let you get a better grip on stuff.

Enjoy the superior American engineering frenchie. I demand you make a new thread when it's finished.

I think you're misinformed the website says its $150 for a one year student license. I've looked into it a few times. I have access at work and in the lab at school but I would love to have it at home but I don't have $150 worth of want. If I'm wrong then please tell me how to get it.

BTW military veterans who are students can get it for $20/year.

Printed it out, it's not working quite as well as I'd hoped there are some things that I can see need improvement. Although overall It's quite a bit stouter than I thought it would be.
The pins didn't print so I had to make do with a few penny nails I had laying around. I'll try and fix that if I can.
I think I'm going to try and design one with a rigid mechanism, since the flexible one tends to be slow about returning the finger to it's starting position.

It's more or less functional but I have no use for it. I'm not sure of the merits of extending the fingers I already have.

If you don't want to waste too much time & money with the 3D modeling/printing/fuck up and redo route, you could go the cheap & simple way and build a prototype out of low temperature Thermoplastic using basic tools you have at home.

When you find the best design, then get it made out of something more longer lasting.

>I need solidworks. How get?
Pirate it.

SolidWorks doesn't care if students or hobbyists pirate their software as long as you don't use it to make money. Once you use that pirated copy to make a profit then they'll come after you (but even then they won't sue you, only force you to pay for every copy you pirated, which is fair)

They allow this because you're familiarizing yourself with their software and you probably can't afford it anyway. If sometime in the future you decide to buy a 3D modeling software you're probably going to buy theirs.

In 1966, before forming Black Sabbath, guitarist Tony Iommi suffered an accident while working in a sheet metal factory, losing the tips of two fingers on his right hand. Iommi almost gave up music, but was urged by the factory manager to listen to Django Reinhardt, a jazz guitarist who lost the use of two fingers.[151] Inspired by Reinhardt, Iommi created two thimbles made of plastic and leather to cap off his missing fingertips. The guitarist began using lighter strings, and detuning his guitar, to better grip the strings with his prosthesis.

I seen him a recently and his current prosthesis looked like it was glued on.
